I purchased Jiu Jitsu unleashed a few months ago and when I read and tried to put on the Twister side control as it was shown in the book and got bucked all the time, so I thought it was twaddle and never tried it again. That is until I brought Mastering the Twister, I have only read up to the grapevine part, we drilled it in training today, and I slapped on the Side Control and my opponent could not bump me off.
It reaffirmed my faith in 10th Planet
Any similar experiences?
When I ain't pulling that Rubber Guard I'm arm dragging to the truck yo. Yo.
I make all my guys ride that position for 1, 2 and 3 min. drills - No transitions, no subs, just ride it. They all hate it at first, but once they figure out how to move, they are locked in.

Oh yea bro, when I first started learning twister side control it felt unusual as fuck & I thought that there was no way in hell that I would ever utilize it in a live roll... But I never gave up on it, I payed close attention to the small details, learned how to manage my base, and improved it!!! Now it is my "go to position" from the top... It just goes to show you that if you drill until it becomes second nature, you can make techniques work ...

From a buttscoot type position, reach with your right arm across and grab your opponents right arm on the tricep. Pull them past you to your right side while you pull yourself towards them, sliding your right leg in between their legs. Curl your right leg around theirs and grapevine your left leg. From here you can get to the truck however you like... pull them on top of you or roll for the foot. There are a bunch of ways to get to the truck from their turtle (which is basically where you armdragged to). Just look them up in the book.
That's not a setup, that's just describing how the armdrag gets you there. You have to do it all at once too.
You can also do the "Hardcore"!!! Even though it's a BQ techniques I can see how it could be affective in rare circumstances...
Arm drag someone as if you were going to take their back but don't go for their back. When you arm drag and their body is coming past you place one foot in between their legs and get desouza control and fall back grapevinen their leg on the fall back. I haven't watched MSTS episode 9 yet because it lags like a mfer. But I hadn't restarted my computer in about 2 months so you know. I wonder if they do it the same way.Quote:

Playing with the position recently, I tend to switch my hips to scarf hold either go for the arm lock with my legs or go to the crucifix position. Basically scraping the arm back up with my inside leg.Quote:

LOL I never used to be good at it either got to practice to get good at anything. Its like people who try their first RG attempt in a mma event. If you havnt put in the reps it will not be their for you. I dont think I would like the feeling of Red holding me in twister side but I hope to get the chance to stop in and train with you guys in victoria sometime.

Twister Side is no joke. I use it against 200 Plus lbers all the time. Lots of transitions and very effective. Like Reverend Kevin said-position control, then submission. And akin to what Ari said-when a 150 lb 5 foot 8 41 year old can control you for as long as they want, it ain't a joke. There are a lot of opportunities for subs, positional shifts, control, and just annoying the crap out of the bottom player. One drill I do personally, and have my students do is something I call "positional sparring" where we start in a position, whether advantageous or disadvantageous, and work to control and refine that position for anywhere from 1 minute to 5 minutes, THEN start submission hunting. Forcing yourself to play one position for say, three weeks, makes you good at it for sure.

I think in Coach Herzog's Russian Cowboy vids he goes over the transition from side control to TSC that we typically use. The vids should be on YouTube.

In all honesty, the twister setups are prolly the weakest part of my game and something i have to invest some reps in, but i've been using the hell out of TSC lately and its almost "fun". Guys just don't know what to do with it, and it's pretty much a one way ticket to mount if you want.
i play a good TSC on one side. my other side is garbage. i use it to bait kimuras and i get a lot of north/south chokes that way, too.
