Triangles from back mount ALL DAY SON!!!!
well i'll be damned.
awesome post man!
Triangle from north south homie!!
Uh, I think he left out triangle from the guard ;)
Didn't forget the triangle from the guard. That day started off with the perfect triangle from guard. Then the next 2-2.5 hours we went through about 16 triangles. They all tied back to the point I was trying to get to that day- whether perfect triangle or imperfect, you get the triangle by 1) thigh over one shoulder and 2) leg under the opposite armpit. Take any triangle and you'll see the pattern repeat itself.
Thanks for your feedback guys!

This is how people should teach and learn IMO. From day one, I've focused more on the positions as a whole, rather than individual moves. This is for everything, not just triangles. I think instructors over simplify when they just explain one move here and there. I get so annoyed when instructors teach a submission from guard, then a sweep from under mount, then an escape from side mount etc... The lessons should be tied together as tightly as possible down to if a person moves an inch, what are the new opportunities or threats that come from it. If you can't teach one move correctly, how are you going to teach several of them. I like where you're going with this and hope you continue to pursue this way of teaching but for a little constructive criticism, you were stumbling over your words quite a bit and seemed a little unsure at times. You need to speak clearer and without too much hesitation so you don't lose anyone in the process of explaining. Then again, a lot of BJJ instructors can barely speak english, so you're one up on them already. The moves could've been a lot more thorough in the explanation of the setup but it's not like you're a black belt, so it's fine. Other than that, great post. Thanks.
JusLove, I appreciate that criticism. The best I've got yet man. Sorry for all the negative points you mention. You're right though, I was unsure about a lot of the set ups in general. Had to think about what I was doing a few times. Could have been the stage fright of being filmed and knowing it could be shown later. Oh and being filmed threw me off guard. I'm usually the one doing the filming, so this was a change of pace. All the while I'm thinking am I doing this right, did I think this through, am I speaking to fast, what if they think it's bogus.. I'll work on it I promise.
As for the positives... Yeah straight up. I beleive in position first. Lots of guys wanna learn subs galore but if they didn't understand how and why they got to that starting point of the position, all techniques go out the window when going 'live.'
This, IMO is the real challenge. Having someone understand the concepts of the position rather than the sub itself. Subs are important but we must remember the control and the mechanics of the subs for that particular sub so that we can apply that sub in old and new ways.
Thank you again for the critism. Copying it to my computer for later reflection!

Ric, lol! Man sometimes I can't differentiate between the jokes and the serious emails and messages. But when in doubt I'll bend to the business side. My bad bro.. Lol!
Definitely repping these after class tonight! Thanks!
Thanks Brent! Like I said before a simple idea but sometimes simplicity flips a whole way of thinking.
So just so we're clear here, the theory is:
Anytime you have your leg over your opponent's shoulder and your other leg under their armpit, you can make a triangle?
Hi Jared, in its simplest form, that is the theory.
Simple right?
Now that you know, you can always attack someone from any position with the triangle option. At times you'll have the thigh on their shoulder, so it'll be up to you to figure how to get your leg in the opposite armpit, or vice versa- leg in the opposite arm pit, so find a way to get the thigh on the opposite shoulder.
Rick
By the way, towards the end of the vid, there was a move we made up when someone grabs for a single. Geo coined it "The Dead Man", after a breakdancing move where you spin on one hand, but instead of spinning outward like a 1990, you spin inward. So props to Geo and VistA crew.
Great shit man, I totally missed out.
Somebody needs to post some arm bar theories.
lol Jared.. I'm with ya on that. there is a lot of good material out there for arm bars. it's always great though how someone's escape to a triangle lends itself to the armbar.
awesome ideas. I'm glad you figured out that pattern to show everyone. I'm sure there must be other patterns that exist for similar submissions. The 90 degree rule was another cool theory that helped my game. Other than that this vid was great help and expanded my understanding of triangles.
Thank you Zaya. When you get that first triangle with this in mind things will click. I've seen it happen. Guys are throwing up triangles on me like no other. That's what I wanted to happen though. The more they attempt the better they become, and the better we all become. No use holding it back ya know.
I liken it to Super Mario Bros., if you remember that game. Are you gonna be the person that stays on the steps at level 3 and wows your buddies by how many free lives you get jumping on the turtles? Or are you gonna advance to that next level and face King Koopa. I'm don't know about you but I think we should be evolving- saving the princess is the goal.
This could be a little too old school for you but you get the picture.
thanks again for your valuable feedback!
Rick
Wow, iPhone word guessing sucks! Sorry for all the typos in the previous post.
I kinda have a whole head and arm theory alltogether.
Thanks for this! ive been getting triangles lately solely on working rubber guard...which I guess follows your theories.
As long as the opponent pulls his arm out basically voluntarily or by force, you are setup for any easy triangle to finish up.
Thanks Mike.. All true. they escape the arm, then quickly shoot the triangle, or even the arm bar. What's cool too is to go for the armbar, connect the armbar quickly, then snap right back to the triangle. They'll be blocking the arm bar when your already sinking the triangle. It catches em off guard.
But yeah man, the triangles we learn from day one are from the back, then you go to the next triangle, to the next. Gets hard to memorize all of em when the new ones come in. But knowing this concept, you will look at every new triangle technique taught to you, and say okay how does this fit the pattern? Cool, check, I get it. Lesson learned.
Thanks again!
Rick
I wasn't going to post this because I felt I had too much criticism for you already and I didn't want you to take it as I'm trying to put you down but seeing as you're being great about constructive criticism, I have one last thing - the finish. I noticed you put on all of your triangles but didn't finish to get the tap for most of them. I realize that a lot of people do that but I find it very important for 2 reasons. The first being from watching an Anderson Silva video and someone didn't finish the move and he said "if you don't finish always, one time, you might not finish in a fight". The second reason is because in this particular situation, a lot of people can't finish triangles from the back or side mount because it's not strong enough to just pinch your thighs together like from guard. They don't understand the importance of the little moves that make the squeeze a lot stronger. You must first try to get perpendicular to your opponent, then leg curl the leg that goes over the shoulder (get that ankle to touch your butt), then the leg under the armpit needs to push out and then down like a squat, then you finally pinch your thighs together. If that still doesn't choke them out, then you can pull down on their head or get that arm that's trapped across but I'm 150lbs and I never need to pull the arm across or pull on the head. Even if you know how to do this already, I feel it's important to really get people to understand it every time you teach a triangle. If you haven't tried this, try it, it's incredibly strong and tight and you never get tired because you're using stronger muscles by curling and squating instead of just pinching your thighs. Looking forward to your progress and ideas. Thanks again for the awesome video.
JusLove,
This is great! Yes, the finish!! Definitely great criticism indeed. This, "then leg curl the leg that goes over the shoulder (get that ankle to touch your butt), then the leg under the armpit needs to push out and then down like a squat, then you finally pinch your thighs together. If that still doesn't choke them out, then you can pull down on their head", is very visual. I'll use this for sure. Very cool.
Rick
great video, more please!
No need for a vid, plenty out there. Just like with you, when I started realizing the principles of the head and arm choke, they just started appearing everywhere without learning intricate setups. Kinda freestylin, ya dig?. Weather its triangles, arm triangles, rats, darces, or anacondas. I still love slick ass setups, but I also love snatchin one up out of nowhere. Either way, badass Slick.
I'm happy to say I was at the session in the video. As awesome as the video is, it doesn't do justice to Slick. The filming was more of a spur of the moment thing and like Slick said, took him a bit off guard. The lesson we learned from Slick was mind altering for sure.. @Slick, you seemed a bit surprised by the flying triangle I attempted on you last night. I gotta say though, it wasn't the magic Aoki tights responsible; it was your teachings brotha! S@M
Good job Rick!!
Thanks Will. Alabama? I used to live out there towards Huntsville. Cool. 10 in Bama/Tiger country!
Yo Roach Clip.. That's where you got that?! Too awesome man.. Almost caught me but now I know I can't be looking down, gotta be watching for that flyin' ish from people.. You see how we get better from it? Even if you caught me, that's what I want. I'm trying to be caught with everything, so I can experience anything. Thank you again.. VistA tomorrow?
Thanks Luciano.. glad you liked it. ask me when ya see me if ya need to see it in person... helped one guy today, as the vid didn't show some little details.
Decatur!!! What!!! That's awesome. My parents lived in Athens. I'm gonna visit y'all for sure!
