I pretty much suck on top no matter what, but I've noticed I'm having an impossibly hard time passing the guard lately. I was hoping maybe people could post some of their favorite/go-to guard passes in hopes of finding some techniques that will work well for me. If you happen to have videos that would be awesome. Thanks guys.
I like to use: Boys Town, hopping up to my feet and pushing down on a knee, or a Popovitch pass. There is no sure way to get past a good guard, you just got to look for an opening.
When I first started Jiu Jitsu, I had a lot of problems breaking the guard as well. Once you get good with your balance, hopping up to your feet and pushing down on one knee with both hands should do you well.

I agree. Standing up, breaking the legs open, and then working my Marcelo passes is my go-to. I have trouble passing the full guard from my knees as well. Just takes reps though...
Far side underhook kneeslice is my fave, but I have been popping up to my feet and marcelo passing.
The Arona Slam seems to break my guard open every time.

biceps control..stand up...eliminats 90% of his attacks (if he opens up his legs to attack your legs just turn and kick out)
First of all keep a knee in the middle, don't let a guy ever close his guard around you. Don't get stuck in the mind set that you have to go into his guard and pass it. You can choose to simply disengage and back away. If I'm up against a good guard player I may disengage and re-approach as many times as necessary to pass without landing in full guard. even passing to half and starting from there can be helpful.

my two favs ill try to explain. my first one is pretty standard breaks just about all guards.
after you "sweep your hair" then posture up, i control the hips by pressing my right elbow and forearm inside their left thigh while either grabbing their belt or just controlling their hips with my palm, fingers bent mr miyagi style. after you are postured and hips are controlled, their attacks are pretty much stuffed. if you feel them open guard, you should be able to force their left thigh to the matt and pass to side control. if not, then put your right knee in their butt cracks and with your left leg, stretch it straight back. that will break most guards and you can like i said earlier force their thigh to the matt to transition to side.
another fav of mine is def a hollywood move. i do it more for fun or when i have someone with an impossible guard. i trap one arm while posturing up. then i start to rock back and forth. when im ready, with a burst of power, i will step over the shoulder of the trapped arm. so their right arm trapped, rock, and with my right leg, burst over their right shoulders.
you can sometimes get an achilles crush out of the ensuing scramble, a knee bar or a heel hook. ill do that same technique to get out of triangles too.

I personally do well manipulating the Femoral artery to get into the underhand pass..but its tricky to place your elbow right to cause just enough pain to break the guard without giving up a triangle..just my two cents
The problem with pain moves that when you finally meet someone who is tough enough to take it or has enough adrenaline pumping, they just don't work. That move is more effective in the gi though when you can grab onto their belt and get a lot more pressure
Yeah, you shouldn't use your elbow to break the guard. It's annoying to your partner, and as a frame your forearm is stronger than just your elbow. You'll find more and more guys will be able pull your arm off at the tricep.
I've been loving a modified version of the goat mount that demian maia showed in a seminar. I'll see if this makes sense in words.
From butterfly on top, use your hips/knee to stuff one leg to the other side (we will say use your right hips/knee to move his left leg to his right side), so that it is across his body and not strong. Also take the underhook with your right arm deep. Then you drive your right knee, taking his left leg with it, until your knee goes over and past his right leg, kinda twisting the guy on bottom in opposite directions with your knee and underhook. Make sure that your whole right shin is past his right leg (in other words, not just the knee, move the ankle over too). Take a grip on his right arm behind the elbow or triceps with your left handto flatten him. For traditional goat mount, you go heavy on your right side and post the left leg out, but Demian showed to put your left foot over your right knee (like if you are sitting with your leg crossed over the other one, not a triangle), and drop your left knee under his armpit to the mat, using the left hand grip to make space for the knee.
If you go heavy, it's a damn nightmare for the guy on bottom. His back and/or hips get heavy pressure, and if he bucks or moves at all, he will basically buck you right into a tight, high mount. You don't even have to pass for a minute. Just let him tire himself out, and either move you into mount with his own energy, or when you feel like he is exhausted, just step into the obvious mount. You even end up with a very high mount with knees under his armpits because of the grips going in.
Hope that all made sense. Anyone else have luck with this?
