What do you guys think about teammates fighting teammates?

Im curious what you guys think about teammates fighting teammates in professional MMA. You always hear about the blackhaus guys refusing to fight each other and the jacksons guys not wanting to do it, etc. What do you guys think, is it just something you have to man up and do as a professional? That's pretty much what I think. I mean if they can do it on the ultimate fighter when theyre living with these guys, you can fight you teammate for a nice paycheck and still be friends after.

Also, you have to think, would you want to fight another 10th Planet brother in MMA? What's the 10th Planet stance on fighting each other in competition? Do we have an official stance?

What do you all think?

I guess the hardest part would be the actual fight preparation.

MMA is a sport, just like football basketball or whatever. Imagine if the Patriots didn't play the Saints (or whoever) in the Superbowl just because some of the guys were on the same college team. It's be pretty lame, no? Figures you both get paid, have some friendly competition, get fan exposure, and enjoy competing in the sport you both love. It's like Dana White always says, "Are the trainers and team-mates going to pay the fighters bills when it's all said and done?" No way.

But then again who do the coaches favor in training? Spraining Partners? I don't know the answer to that one. Guess it depends on each camp/fighter.

If it's for a title, I say go for it. You're the two best fighters in your weight class. Fight. But not just for exhibition.

Friends train together in other sports Football is just as physical and violent as MMA probably more so in many ways.

Guys in the NFL are friends with QBs and still sack them every chance they get.

I think they should get over it and just fight like Bas said avoid them before the fight have a beer after its over.

Jacksons guys not fighting eachother thats so far from the truth. I train there and at my other school and ive had to fight some of my teammates. Its that we dont wanna fight eachother its just that were a small tight gym and we would rather find other competion, but im not metioning any names "cough cough rashad" some guys just dont get that you can be friends afterwards and thats all that really matters. check out jacksons mma series on youtube some good shit man

Great question Matt. You can refuse any fight you want, but I think that outside the cage, you can be friends with anyone you want to, inside the cage, it's strictly business till the fight is over. Makes me think of the beautiful Bonner vs Griffin fight.

I think, till you walk a mile in the shoes of the people you are making declarations about, you should withold these declarations. TUF isnt a "team" guys are all there for themselves, and everyone knows it from day one. Being on a team training with guys is completely, utterly different. Ever notice EVERY SINGLE actual fighter for the most part says they wont fight the guys they train with day in and day out, and only some fans (the ones who dont train consistently oddly enough), media, and Promoters are the only folks clamoring for people to "act professional"? That should tell you all you need to know.

Explain, if you would why you had to fight team mates in a MMA match? I could see it becoming something that is pressured for folks at the top, where there can only be so many top competitors, but until you are at the elite level, esp in MMA where there are fights galore for up and comers, I dont see it. Could you elaborate?

I would rather not fight a teammate, and I agree with Nick Diaz on this point, he said something along the lines of "If Jake Shields is ranked first, then I want to be ranked second." What better way to say your camp or team is the best if the top two of the entire division is represented by them?

Nice, looks like we're split on this issue. That's what I was hoping for because I'd really like to flesh out both sides of this debate. I honestly don't know which side I'm on, but I do think that when you're in the UFC at the highest level, you probably shouldn't be turning down fights because you don't want to compete against a friend. I do understand and appreciate what Nick Diaz says with regards to Jake Shields, and yea it's great when your team has #1 and #2 but if they fight, they're still #1 and #2, I just don't see a reason to not fight. At that level, youre a professional. I think it comes with the territory, especially when you have teams the way we do now where there are a handful of elite teams with all the best fighters in the world.

Anyway, keep the opinions coming, I'm quite curious.

You are getting paid to fight who the UFC pays you to fight, do it!

If you are in the UFC then you do need to fight. Example, you are a member of a chess team, you and 3 of your teammates enter a tournament. You will be matched against your teammate at some point and have to eliminate him from the tourny. If you do not want this thing to happen then, do not enter tournys or figure out something like how IFL. To be honest UFC or the fans do not give crap about who is training where. Some of these fighters like PAris Hilton and her boyfriends. NEw camp every 6 friggin months. Everything you do outside the UFC is your own thing, where you train, how you train, what you eat, who you associate with. UFC, fans, media dont tell these fighters what to do or are not involved with their training camps. So technically you are not a team when you are in MMA, it is not a team sport and the Jackson team, or Ceaser Gracie team stuff is non existing inside one of UFC's events.
As far as Rashad's situation it was blatantly obvious that Rashad knew Jon Jones was going to be a dominant LHW and Greg JAckson was trying to milk out Rashad before Jones started to destroy everybody. I understand if somebody refuses to fight a teammate or his brother or something but that should not stop the promoters from coming up with the fights.

How many fights have you trained for, and fought in, yourself? Football games, tennis matches, grappling matches are NOT PRIZE FIGHTING. When you fight a friend, only two things can happen, he either hurts your career/livelihood, or you hurt his. I have yet to see a pro, who has an established past with a good gym (as in he stays and trains with a team for a good long while) say he would fight his team mates. Sure gym hoppers will, but most of the guys who hop gyms have issues past fighting anyway.

If it's at the end of the bracket sure, we both trained hard and fought everyone in the division and won, how anti climactic would it be for us the two fighter/friends/teamates not to find out who's better? Very I say. Plus lets remember there is a difference between teammates and friends, I've had friends that train w/ me and I hate them as teammates, and I have teammates that I are far from friends, no anamosity just not guys I would hang out with, Would I fight my friend that trains with me idk, would I fight a teammate yeah, and depending who we're talking about, today. lol

I was under the impression you have not trained at any one gym for a very long time, and I also am guessing you have never fought MMA (I say this because I know you were looking for a gym to train at before on here). So to be honest, you are making a call that you cant make, since you have not in fact been in the shoes of the guys who are being told what sort of calls to make (as in training over the course of several fights with people you trust and respect).

Team mates with regard to training for a fight, is a heck of alot different than random grappling partners IMO.

it does present a conflict of interest, no doubt about it..,however, business is business and there should be an understanding that it's not personal on any level. i always like how randy couture put it, you're just going out there to compete and do your best to win.

There are definitely dudes at my gym I would like to ko. But most I wouldnt. At the moment me and my friends would send eachother to the er if the $ is right. Dont know how I would feel if I knew I didnt have to go back to my real job, but I would do pretty much anything to buy my mom a house.

Huge difference between fighting and everything else. Grappling tourneys arent even close. Chess? Couldnt think of a worse comparison. Ufc is not a tournament bracket. However, certain obligations come with bein champ. Would love to be in this predicament one day.

I asked, because I wanted to know just how much actual experience you have regarding the whole situation. So in short, not had a fight, and very short time with one team/camp? Thus I can see where you might feel no problems with fighting someone you train with. Once you have a few fight camps, train with and trust more of the guys you are with, your opinon may change.

Also, it was 6 months ago you were talking about looking for a gym, thus I have no idea regarding where you have, or have not been, I can only go by what you say here. If I made you feel defensive, its not the intent, what is my intent is to try to see where folk's opinions are coming from, as the basis for forming an opinion lends value to it. I said it once, for the most part its fans and promoters calling for training partners/team mates to fight, not so much guys who fight.

I'd like to apologize for my outburst. I got way to worked up over that comment. and I'm sorry. I understand what stlnl is saying, that there is a profound bond between guys who train together. that a fight could destroy. I just don't have that conflict yet. Btw G-13 is da shhhhhiiiittttttt!!!!!!!

Exactly. There you go. A pro fighter said it. In the end it's preference. Some people can't differentiate. Me personally, I would never fight my friends over a personal beef. But if it's a sport, I don't see anything wrong. If I whoop his ass, I'll give him a hug after, buy him a beer and chill.. We'll watch the fight and we can talk through what he did wrong. If he whoops my ass, then I'll buy him a beer and compliment him on how good he is. If it's a good back and forth fight, it'll bring us closer and we'll have an amazing memory.

IDK, maybe it's because I've full blown fist fought family members before that I realize a fight is just a fight. I've become friends with guys that I've fought in street fights. But I can understand how other people feel like fighting is only for people who aren't friends. It's all about perspective and neither perspective is wrong. Me and my boys grew up fighting on the street. We know how to differentiate fighting because of beef and fighting as a competitive sport. Other people can't make that distinction.

Bas Ruttan is a former pro fighter. But again, I feel your perspective. I see guys with deep bonds like the Nog bros, the Cesar Gracie fam, chute boxe....I would understand them not wanting to fight eachother. But a lot of the dudes from other teams....they're not really that close.

But like I mentioned before, it's about perspective. I wouldn't mind fighting my best friend for a championship. I wouldn't want to make a habit out of it. But if it's for a title, that means we're both the best. And I'm ok with engaging in a competition to see who's best. If I'm at the top like that, my livelihood isn't in jeapordy. It's a once in a lifetime thing. I think it would be a great story to tell our kids when we're old. It's all about perspective.

No need to apologize, When we read something on the internet, without tone of voice and without the way we would say it in a conversation, it tends to look, alot more aggressive/negative/adversarial than it is. I tend to be direct (in conversation as well, but with folks you know, and can hear their voice, it comes off different) and that isnt always the best way to do things. I also understand where it looks like I am just running your opinion down, which isnt exactly my intent, at all.

Also, honestly this is only really becoming a topic because IMO, Jackson did a good deal of manipulating and side ways talking to guys to get a guy who was going to be a contender to come to his camp. What Jackson has done, regarding his fighters makes me raise my eyebrows. First Diego, then Rashad. The guy makes me wonder.

word I hear ya 6 months ago I was thinking of leaving where I had gone after lynchburg 10thp folded I'm still there, if you remember that discussion I was in a yr contract. So in short phases like So in short really are detremental to a peaceful exchange of thoughts and opinions. :)

Jones grew up fighting his brothers so he knows how to differentiate fighting for sport and fighting over anger. I think that's one of the things that makes him so good. But whatever. You do realize, Jackson brought Jones to his camp under the fib he would never fight any of his other guys, right? It really doesnt matter whether Jones was willing to fight Rashad (and of course, after sliding into his camp, and training with him and LEARNING from him he is even more willing to fight him now) what does matter is he came in with the understanding, from day one, the guys there DO NOT FIGHT each other. Rashad, and Jardine didnt want Jones there, sort of like how Diego didnt want GSP there, because they felt it was inevitable that at least one of them would be fighting Jones. True. I see your point. On my end, I don't feel like Jones or Jackson messed up. In the end, this is still a business. Jackson sees a guy who could become champ. He's not supposed to recruit him because other guys say no? It doens't make sense to say, no cuz I'll end up fighting him. If that's the case, you can never recruit anyone! Or on the other end you're saying 1 of 2 things. Either, he'll never be a threat so send him in (that's insulting.) Or, no that guy's too good, and he might end up being champ (cowardly.) I think Jackson did the right thing bringing in GSP and Jones. And he was right. They both had what it took to become champs.

Now Jones....Jones made an agreement to not fight team mates. OK. And he never expressed a desire to fight them. And he wasn't going to fight them. But when pressed, he was honest and said that he had no problem with it. Now saying "I'd fight my friend if it came down to it" is veeeeeeery different from saying "I WANT to fight my friend." He didn't say he wanted to fight Rashad. Only that he'd fight him if he had no choice. I feel like it was Rashad who was the sensitive baby who took it to heart.

Run a camp, and sell the guys out who trust you completely a few times, and see how many folks you have left there.........You really, really dont see the point. It is a business, but it is one built on trust, and if a fighter cant trust his trainer (in this case, he cant for sure) why on earth would he stay with him? Its not about not ever recruiting anyone, its about STAYING LOYAL TO THE PEOPLE WHO TRUST YOU AND IN MANY WAYS HAVE MADE YOU AS MUCH AS YOU MADE THEM. If you cant see that, we are never going to agree. Had Jones come up in the camp its one thing, for Jackson to go recruiting him, after most of his skills/ability was developed JUST to say he trained a champ (when it was more along the lines he simply put an edge on an already existing sword, rather than forged a weapon) at the expense of his guys who have been with him a long time........

If you really think this is how a gym/fight trainer should operate/"its a business" I hope you never decide to train people. It is underhanded, and in a big way.

I trained for 0 fights in my life. But I still think if you are expecting to make $150,000 to $500,000 per fight, have people buy your t-shirts, buy your payper views be your fan and make you famous, while a promoter is giving you all this chance, I think it is your obligation to your fans and the promoter to fight anyone who is regarded to be a challenge to you. I am not saying beat your brother to a pulp for $300 on a local show.

Ah I do see your point now. I see how Jackson can be seen as the villain. But I don't see Jones doing anything wrong at all. He never held the conviction of not fighting friends/team mates. Had Rashad not decided to make the fight happen, I have no doubt that Jones wouldn't fight, or request to fight rashad. And regardless of the wrongdoing of Jackson, Rashad is also at fault for going against his supposed convictions. Again. Jones didn't say he WANTED to fight him, he just said that if it came to it, he wouldn't have a problem. If Rashad really believed in his convictions, he would've stuck to them, not changed his mind over a difference of opinion.

Thigs like this show the true face of cerain people. I never really thought of Greg Jackson to be a very loyal perfect trainer type anyways. He sees Jones, realizes he will be the best, brings him over, milks rashad until rashad loses, replaces him with Jones and in the end he wants nobody to say anything since non of this is his fault. It is all his fault and he is the one who did this. It was the proper business decision ofcourse, getting jones and GSP etc.. but that also tells me that if jones hurt his knee, was out of action for a year, came back got destroyed iun his first fight and tanked like Brandaon Vera, and at the same time there was this guy who had some hype behind him and had the tools to be the next big thing, Jackson snacth him as soon as possible, tell Jones that he is still number one and the guy is here to help him train and they are never gona fight, show all of Jones game play to the new guy, build him to the title contender and have him smash Jones. I can totally see that happening.

Moral of the story, in this life it is rare to find people you can trust and if you ever slip even one bit, you will be replaced. After all of this, now those camp jumping guys don't seem too bad does it? They want to get the best training they can get their hands, they don't hide they will fight anybody for the title or try to be sneaky about it.

Does any one of you ever belived that Jones never wanted to be a champion? He never thought to himself, " man I can smash that guy like a bug" after watching some of Rashad's fights? It is every fighters goal to be a champion from day one and anyone that says no I just want to be number two is a liar. Maybe Except Nick Diaz Jake Shields situation, since Nick seems more concerned with his word and personality than his actual success.

ITS A SPORT ITS OKAY TO FIGHT A FRIEND OR TEAMMATE. I've discussed this with my teammates and we would definitely fight each other. it makes me sick when i see competitions where people flip a coin.
