this is just my opinion and what i dislike when others do it
my instructor always tells us 30% and will tell us how much percent he wants us going
so when people go 100% and are armbarring me with all their strength it makes me angry
that or when they take you down but they drop you and dont politely put you down
they literally pick you up and slam you from their feet (usually first time wrestlers)
thats about it
what do you think is dirty grappling?
I don't have many things that upset me besides being powerbombed or getting forearmed in the throat. I've been training with the same group of guys for awhile and we're pretty rough on each other though. (Strong crossfaces, neck cranks, suplexs, etc.) But we've built that trust that you have to have in order to do that stuff. I wouldn't treat a new guy that way until he felt comfortable.
you mean when people are on their backs and they push your throat in basically with their forearm? i forgot that one
After dealing with 2 knee sprains in 6 months I'm hating on guys that jump on a foot and crank it a fast as possible.
I have nothing against leg attacks but you wouldn't go after an arm like that so why do it to a foot?
Chill out, slow down a bit and make sure to give your partner time to tap. It's just training. ;)
Just forearm's to the neck that pisses me off.
Nothing is dirty, everything is legit. Of course if you have any injuries just let your partner know, and ask them if they have any.
if it makes me tap, it's dirty. :)
other than snatching up heel hooks as hard as you can, i say everything goes.
not showering or brushing teeth before showing up....that literally makes it dirty. I understand people come straight from work, but that's the type of dirty grappling i hate. makes me want to switch partners.
This is pretty much the norm at most of the gyms i train at...what time is it grip and rape chokes get your opponent to open up when they are T-Rexed. We dont consider it dirty...just part of the game. Forearms to face are a different story. My pet peeve is cranking on subs...if you have it locked in go slow...if the guy doesnt tap apply tap just apply steady pressure...if he still doesnt tap let it go and transition to something else. Like Jake said...its just training. Tourneys are a different story.
This has been discussed before on this forum, and I personally feel that some people are too sensitive about what is "dirty". If you are referring to cranking submissions before your opponent has a chance to tap, slams, small joint manipulation, biting, eye gouging, and other things that are clearly against the rules of any gym and/or competition that I am aware of, than that is dirty and totally unacceptable.
On the other hand, some people get very sensitive about leaning on the throat, digging an elbow into the ribs, etc., which I accept as part of the game. It is a contact sport, and some level of toughness should be expected. Also, anyone with a more catch wrestling oriented background knows this is SOP for those guys.
Agreed, no cranking on fully extended locks. Which is why heel hooks are so dangerous. They are already fully extended.
Last week a gym hopper came in and I caught a triangle. Awesome defense and I couldnt finish, so I decided to kung fu move, while still pulling on my shin. Was lookin for the go-go but his chin was tucked, so I pulled down on one shin and pushed up on the other in kind of a vice of shins on his head/face/jaw. I felt I could of crushed his skull so I let go, but when I did he was pissed. Dirty? Face or jaw cranks and pain compliance techs?
As long as your controlled, everything(cept the obvious) goes in my book as well.
This.......but the last picture shows that dirty isn't always bad.

I personally don't like when the person on top just smothers the face of the guy on bottom causing a tap by suffocation as opposed to a legitimate submission. That just seems cheap and devoid of class.
heel hooks at 100%
hairs pulling, grabbing individual fingers pressing eyes
what about digging your elbows in someone's thigh to break open a closed guard? I personally would not try to pass that way.
I just hate feeling like my windpipe is getting crushed. I understand its standard procedure, because I train catch.. still sucks though. But to get revenge I always knee on neck/face ride them when I get top position....
Also I don't believe in yanking submissions, especially heel hooks! Its just a matter of respect. You have to treat your training partners right.
The digging of knuckles into the ribs pisses me off to no end. oh and covering the mouth and nose is downright disrespectful. If I am ever in a tourny and someone does either of those to me that's when I start to throw punches at the face and no I don't care if I get disqualified
abso-freaking-lutely. sciatic nerve pass. Beginners try it a lot, works well with other beginners. but laughable when tried on experienced guys.
i think i dislike long fingernails more than about anything else. i cant count how many times ive had a big red scratch or gash on my face because some kid doesnt know how to trim his nails. its just annoying, rude and makes me look like a douche in my investor meetings.
Is this the look you're talking about Kendell?

Dirty to me is when you have several parts of your body taped because of ringworm, your clothes smell like you smoked (weed or cigs) right before you showed up, and stank armpits.
i rolled with a guy once who tapped me with his gross ass cig breath and BO. Easily the 2 most effective techniques in grappling IMO
I used to roll with a guy who never clean-shaved so that he could use the stubble in your face. No bicep was safe from his elbows, no thigh or calf was safe from his knees, and no rib was safe from his chin! It was a good way of distracting his opponent though...
I hate bad breath due to dehydration. And not washing your t-shirt or rash guard after EVERY session!
i personally don't like it when people shove there forearm into my throat, (particularly happens in half guard)
and diving on twisty leglocks, i don't want to end up on crutches for a few months cause of a injury whill just rolling in class.
I'd say 'checking the oil', 'meat hooks', and eye pokes are dirty.
The other stuff that is legal but uncomfortable is O.K., although if you are just training, grinding knuckles into people's ears or ribs is just unnecessary and pretty 'dickish' in my opinion.
this is more my pet peeve when rolling. i've rolled with some shall we say THICK guys and instead of using technique and position they press the HAM over your face and you cant breathe. i have honestly had a guy lay his ample gut over my face and I tapped! granted these guys usually have the dreaded hefty weight advantage, but its never fun!
personally I would want to get forearmed to the neck, facepalmed and take knuckles to the ribs in practice because chances are someones gonna do it in a tournament. I'd rather condition my body to take it during practice and learn how to deal with it instead of getting shocked by it in a tourney. and it's not like the chances of getting injured from it are any higher than from a choke or armbar or leglock.
They can pull whatever the hell they want on me, granted they don't bitch when I do the same to them.
What pisses me off is when you are training and going over something and the person you are working with goes full out on a drill not rolling but a drill. I was partnered up with someone a few yrs ago and we where doing rear naked choke defense. The guy I was working with couldnt get the choke in so he dug his knuckles into my orbital bone. I found this dirty since it was just a drill my eye swelled up a bit and blackend some, I was more pissed off by his tactis than anything else.
You do know what you signed up for right?
i havent been forearmed to the neck in a while, but i would think now if someone did it to me i would use it to get a deep hook on that arm and go for an armbar
bad hygene is the worst. unshaved nails, long sweaty hair, & some dudes just fucking smell like piss. it's just disrespectful to not be clean. thats why you gotta have hygene rules, as for the physical Brutes, battling meatheads is just a part of the game. it's the practitioners job to find the solution.
One guy twisted my ear and put his elbow on my temple. I put the end to that when he fell a sleep.
