GI vs NO GI Bragging Rights This Saturday

if the fight goes to the ground between gsp and shields weil see american jiu jitsu vs brazilian jiu jitsu, nogi vs gi

who do we think has the edge and what will it mean if either wins by submission, jake shields was able to outclass kampamann on the ground despite losing 20 pounds in a day and being totally gassed, hes submitted multiple world champions like leo santos and stopped top bjj fighters like charuto verissimo, hes been able to hang in with the best like saulo and popovitch and only been submitted by marcelo.

GSP has lossed to leo santos by armbar but has been able to smash such grapplers as matt serra, matt hughes, jon fitch, karo parisyan, bj penn.

i think if we see a submission on the ground it will come from shields but if the fight ends by strikes on the ground it will be in gsp's favour

Shields is a Cesar Gracie black belt. Doesn't that mean he's used the gi?

shields self proclaims that he has only ever trained with a gi four times in his life, he won the purple belt pan american championships with only minimal hours of gi training, his style is 100% nogi

one is flying a banner for jiu jitsu in its purest form (the gi) and the other doesnt use the gi and has mixed wrestling with nogi jiu jitsu, and when jake shields tapped leo he couldnt punch him in the face either but he still tapped him out.

and i wouldnt say that their accomplishments in grappling mean nothing as its gives an indication of who has the better skill level on the ground with submissions, which is what this thread is about, jake shields has submitted 6 of his last ten opponents and the other 4 were beaten by getting out grappled and punched in the face until either the ref got tired of keeping count or the judges gave the decision. gsp has submitted only matt hughes in his last ten fights, the rest have been decisions through having superior wrestling and tko's from strikes on the ground

bit confused as to why u train nogi aswell if thats ur opinion, i wouldnt of started another generic thread on the gi vs no gi debate, this thread is geared towards the jake shields vs gsp fight this saturday that may or may not give more respect to the nogi world if jake shields wins, as off the top of my head he is the only pure 100% nogi jj trained black belt/ top level fighter i can think of in mma. and to also see peoples thoughts on who will win the fight if the fight hits the ground/ in general.

if this was a gi vs nogi debate i would agree with u that gi trained competitors are currently better, but i could also give u a list or reasons for this, but this is another conversation

Randy is a bb. You pretty much addressed what I was gettin at. If gsp is flying any flag, its wrestling with passing, aka American jj. Regardless of that quote.

i agree those r his main skills but in terms of training for jj those r gsp's beliefs, however i think he may have been persuaded to make these commets on the basis that it is known that jake shields has never touched a gi but is doing extremely well on the ground in mma,which may be contradicting the teachings of gsp's bjj trainers. i find it quite innovative of cesar gracie to award a black belt to someone who has never trained in a gi considering so many refuse to and the fact that hes part of a very prestigous family who have very strong views towards the gi.

Don't see the connection.

1.) GSP isn't considered to be a top gi player
2.) They aren't grappling on Sat (punches will play a role)
3.) They won't be wearing gi's, so if a no-gi guy beats a gi guy with no gi's on, what would that prove?

Oh, and just so you know.......

Most newbie's hate the gi because it's more technical, hot, uncomfortable, and takes longer to get good at. However, if you stick with it, many people start to appreciate the gi (not all, but many). Don't hate on the gi just because you didn't try it or stick with it.


Since it may come up: I play both gi and no-gi. When I first started I hated the gi for the reasons above and liked no-gi because I could slip out of bad situations more often when I made mistakes. Now that I've been playing for a while, I really like gi better because it's more of a skill / strategy game than no-gi. Of course, if MMA is your thing, then no-gi would, of course, be preferrable, but if you are looking purely at jiu-jitsu, there is so much more to the gi game and it is therefore much more interesting. <----IMHO

it would prove that one is perhaps better for training before a fight. just so you know... i never said i hated the gi, theres is no gi bashing in the entire thread, i have only commented on the skill set of both fighters, u dont know me so u shouldnt presume to know what i train, for your information i train both and i wouldnt consider myself a 'newbie', think u should check the colour of ur own belt, news flash its blue not black so try not to be condescending. oh and i dont think its that its more technical, hot and uncomfortable that people dont stick with it, i think its bcos in a fight u have no handles, u dont grap and pull, u underhook and clinch. but more importantly it contradicts the rule of specificity in sports in that u should train how u are going to compete and can confuse ur muscle memory. as eddie has said its like a greco roman wrestler training judo before a greco roman tournament. but like i said i dont hate the gi i think any time on the mat is beneficial regardless of what ur wearing, maybe read the thread next time before going into gi defence mode, big kiss x

nope on an interview on the ufc primetime/ufc countdown he said that he has never used a gi because it isnt effective in the cage

When it comes to MMA you see the no gi guys doing best.

When it comes to No Gi grappling (Grapplers Quest) you see the Gi guys do best.

well it is the point because ur making urself sound ignorant by saying gsp sucks in a gi when u have absolutely no idea of his skill level, i highly doubt he sucks, the guy is a world class athlete and his attention to technique is propably second to nun in mma and hes a black belt!, so stop projecting on to me and stop being ignorant urself. and the thread isnt pointless bcos its just talking about the fight on saturday, no need to take it personally, theres no gi bashing its just talking about how they train and what their skill set is and how they will win the fight, if u cant read properly then bounce.

oh and when it comes to mma u dont always see no gi trained guys doing best, as there guys like demian maia,bj penn, gsp, jon fitch, anderson silva doing very well and all have been gi trained

Yet you have Shields, the Diaz brothers and Melendez without the gi.

I train Gi I don't want to do mma I want to be an amazing grappler and all the amazing world class grapplers use Gi it seems.
