what if you're wrong. what if it's the fighters choice to bring them along.
bring him along.
well anderson and him already admitted that it was a publicity stunt when they said all that stuff about him teaching anderson his kick etc. seems pretty likely the same thing is happening again. i havent seen Seagal in any other MMA events or anything even related to MMA, then suddenly hes best buddies with top 10 guys? i smell something all too familiar..
thank you i was thinking the same thing
he needs to take his 5k year old martial art and leave
considering it isnt effective anyways
seagals another canseco, they cant except their not in the limelight anymore and they take whatever publicity they can grab, whether its good or bad
I see it this way:
There are two things Steven Segal has done with his life -- martial arts and self-promotion. It turns out he's pretty good at one and REALLY good at the other. I think a lot of folks don't like him because of the self-promotion and movie career and as a result disregard the whole of his martial arts experience. I've never met the man, never trained with him, and never seen him fight a trained fully resisting opponent. As the first westerner to open and run a successful dojo in Japan I'll give him some props that he's not a complete moron when it comes to the fighting arts. He's too old and fat to re-start his career as a fighter but he can certainly keep the self-promotion thing going. I really have no idea whether he is being disingenuous by being associated with fighters like Lyoto and Anderson Silva. I would think that if he was completely full of shit they wouldn't let him hang around. There must be SOME benefit to having him around even if it's not for the training. Perhaps he brings fans to certain fighters who might otherwise not be interested in MMA. I dunno, but I get the feeling he's going to be around for a while.
Pretty sure him opening his own gym in Japan is a little over blown. He married his instructors daughter and I read one time that her dad basically gave them a gym to run. Then when he had the cred he bailed on her and took his first westerner to open a gym in Japan claim stateside to profit.
It was a while back that I read this so this is just a summary of what I can remember. I could be wrong.
It's not shameless self promotion he actually trains with these fighters and is good friends with a lot of them and has been for quite sometime. It wasnt until the silva thing that people noticed him hanging around. Segal is actually well versed in the popular mma martial arts as well as akido.
He isnt planning on becoming a fighter himself, as no one wants to see him do that, but he is into the mma scene and I dont have a problem, the guy is a serious martial artist at the end of the day, despite his has been movie star persona.
I've got nothing against Steven Seagal, but I feel that there are definitely better coaches for high level mma. That said, I'd love it if more fighters trained with old school action heroes.
I heard that Randy Couture has been training with Blanka.
If we are training with old school action heroes, then I want to train with Wong Fei Hung.
If Lyoto is going to have Steven Segal in his corner, then Randy should have Chuck Norris in his corner. Then he doesn't even have to fight. Those are the rules.
impure resurrection to bring back bruce lee and have him corner gsp. Anyone who gets that reference is cool in my book
I have one question from a logic point of view. If Steven Segal is so bad and this is all a publicity stunt for him, then why do Silva and Lyoto carry him around? If they did not want him there, then he would not be there, there is no way he can force his way in to the videos or the weigh ins. So there are 2 possibilities.
One- Lyoto and Silva truly benefit from Segals teachings, mentally and physically so they want to keep him around.
Two- Segal, just like Vandamme, was a much larger celebrity in 3rd world countries ( not just Brazil there are many around), that Lyoto and Silva feel like they benefit from his presence in ways such as becoming more relevant and earning more American fans.
In the end truly a fighter is only as good as how many fans he has.
So which one?
Holy shit, you gotta be kidding me. if lyoto wasnt such a great karate guy i would think seagal has some magic ability to teach front kicks
is you do right, No can defense.
guess what guys, other martial artists besides for MMA fighters and trainers can help you improve as a fighter too. Just look at Joe Rogan. He taught GSP how to throw a better spinning back kick. Fucking GSP.
look just because he's been in a few movies doesn't discredit him as a martial artist. He's a fucking 7th degree black belt in Akido. That's his whole LIFE of dedication. This usually means he knows a thing or two about martial arts.
And don't go around saying akido isn't a legitimate MA, it's a joke, bla bla. It has many applications in fighting. Roy Dean even uses some akido techniques in his jui jitsu.
And yes, segal is a media whore. But guess what, he didn't go around boasting that he showed silva the front kick, as some of you make it sound. SILVA was the one who gave him credit. So let him have it.

Rest in peace Pat Morita. Rest in peace.
that kick from lyoto was the greatest thing i have ever seen in my life
better than andersons anyday
he is a black belt in taekwon do and has been for about 30 years
he also won tons of championships as a teenager
so he has the right to teach gsp
considering gsp didnt know how to do shit tonight
except get his eye swollen and complain about it
yet Seagal doesen't have the right to teach anybody? Did you miss the part where I said Seagal is a 7th degree black belt? He started practicing in the early 1970's so that would mean he's been doing it for about 40 years.
did you miss the flying front kick that machida knocked out Couture with? Or the part where he said him and Seagal had been working on it together?
lol why would he not have the right to teach fighters techniques when he is obviously qualified and two UFC champions (one former) have credited him with their most recent knockouts?
much love brotha but that just makes no sense whatsoever.
I support Mr Seagel. And Van Damme TKD and Karate is back from the coma!
Now this is the exact kick Eddie asked about in TaekwonJoe. Anderson's was similar, this was spot on. Eddie appears to have the same intuition for uncommon yet effective striking as well. Damn kid!
Yup naruto reference. I have been reading the manga online since I was 14 and im 23 now fuck! Oh and beware that front kick of death people silva and machida too!
derp.
