not really, he started out as an actor but learned to be a real fighter through his bad habits of picking fights and being who he is.
Granted he did appear in his first film when he was only 3 months old, (lol), he did train in the martial arts for 20 years (13-33), introduced his own style/philosophy, opened schools and wrote books, etc. Are you going to say that Eddie isn't a martial artist because he played music first? lol...
what? thats not what im saying at all lol.
what he was*
The reason I became obsessed with Martial Arts from the age of 6 . Bruce Lee and Kung Fu theater.
Bruce Lee is my hero! The movie 'Enter the Dragon' is my favourite movie of all time. He inspired me to start my Martial art training 23years ago when i was 8.
If you're a Bruce Fan you have to watch "The Game of Death" that appears on the 2 disc version of the Enter the Dragon DVD. This is a very different film than "Game of Death" that uses a body double and was released a couple of years after Bruce died. The "The Game of Death" version that appears on the Enter the Dragon DVD is an incomplete film that features only footage with the real Bruce Lee. It even includes the actual dialogue that was intended to be in the film. Bruce Lee's concept of his character fighting a different style of martial art on each level of the building is intact in this version. It's a really great piece of film.
He was what mystified and made me fall in love with the martial arts as a little boy. Thank you Bruce, you truly are, and always will be the man.

Mike Tyson, made me fall in love with Martial Arts as a kid. Not some actor with good abs.
Bruce lee is as important to martial arts as the Gracies. If im not mistaken Eddie himself initially practiced jeet kune do in admiration of bruce's stylee before gravitating towards jits. Who knows, without bruce there may not be a 10th P.....& i like being an alien B)
Bruce Lee's movies is what inspired a lot of people into martial arts because without them nobody would have a clue who he was. As a lot of people have posted; this movie or that movie is what got them hooked. Regardless if the stories are true, it was the movies. The gracies didn't make movies, they went out and fought people. Can't even compare.
Eddie is the Bruce Lee of Jiu Jitsu (IMO).
I had Dragon The Bruce Lee Story on laser disk and Basic Instinct (Sharon Stone hot hot!). I couldn't afford much else. Those disks were expensive!
A great documentary on Bruce Lee

WU-TANG!
At least we have Steven Seagal to look up to! :)
"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." - Bruce Lee
@Frank R.... Sure the movies gave him exposure but i don't see how his films would diminish his worth as an influential figure in martial arts. Believe it or not the dood could actually go & was an instructor before the big films. I understand that in your mind it's hard to make the comparison between he and the gracies due to the times being different and the magnitude to what MMA has evolved to because of Rorion but it's not just the going out and fighting people that make you a martial artist(Bruce did fight, did win). Bruce was a philosopher with a mind as powerful as any fist. Its hard not to be inspired by his total body of work. @Hoback jeayuh WuTang4eva bruh!
I understand he was a great martial artist. Nobody is taking that away from him. I was just talking about the movies getting his name around the world because let's face it, the only place any of us ever heard of him was in a film. He was before our generation for us to have ever even seen him on top of him being in another part of the world and word of mouth alone could not have got him as maintream as he is today. Nobody has mentioned anything about what makes someone a martial artist or not so I don't know where you are getting that from. The Gracies spread philosophy just as much as they have spread their techniques... Both inspire people around the world but regardless of how, we can both agree that they did something right if we are having this discussion and because of them we are on this forum today. Amazing.

TMNT FTW
bruce's path may have taken twists and turns through things other than fighting, and like everyone else he had his own journey but the philosophies he ended up with were pretty air tight, and are basically the same things that all successful modern warriors use.
Comparing Bruce Lee to Mike Tyson is like comparing Water to fire. To totally different things homie!Bruce Lee understood the Art of Martial Arts. Mike Tyson was a great boxer but not a Martial Artist. Bruce Lee changed the game.
