I still find myself trying to explain what jiujitsu is to people. And most say that's that UFC stuff right !! & I say no, jiujitsu is one element of MMA, What's MMA !! & so on. With jiujitsu being the best self defense martial art, how do we seperate it from the intimidating world of MMA. And get more who "desperately" need it to swallow the green pill.

LOL I do a traditional style of aiki jiujitsu everytime it comes up people say bjj so i know how u feeling.

A couple of my Judo buddies and I laugh at how often the "Judo chop" comes up in conversation with the uninformed...! Ha!

I have a problem with explaining what Jiu Jitsu is. I feel stupid when I say it around people who don't know anything about Martial Arts..... I'm like you know wrestling like stuff. Then they say that is fake. Then i say what I do isn't fake . Then they say it is if it's wrestling. Then I tell them about something to do with eagles and redwood trees. That ends the conversation.

I often say it's like playing chess with your body & you really get to checkmate people. And some say, i've never played chess !! well imagine checkers on steroids !! frustrating shit, I guess thats why the slowest antelope is first to suffer the " MATA LION "

Jeez man, its easy. In Jiu Jitsu you can say "come here, I will show you" without any lacerations or brain damage.

When I moved to Alabama from Wisconsin, I told people I used to wrestle and they would automatically think it was WWE shit. Then I would tell them no, what I did was real. Then they would say that WWE is real and I would just hang my head and walk away.

I think of Jiu Jitsu as non-aggressive, chess-like grappling with a lot of emphasis on how important technique is. But very few understand until they actually give it a shot.

Usually when I refer to it as submission wrestling, people get a better idea of what I do. For the longest time my in laws kept asking me how "Karate" was going.

My wife will ask me if i have Ninja training tonight. Lol I love it. But yea.. explaining it to some one else i use the "chess where you choke a the shit out of some one" explanation.

My wife used to call it " Suzuki" class and told me she would leave me if i got coliflour ear, now I got her to train with me so she calls it by it's name and asks me if I would leave her if she got coliflour ear! WTF?

I'm looking for a commercial space to open my school. The real estate guy says in one of our first conversations, "I spoke with the landlord, he's cool with a karate school". I explain to him in a cordial cool tone, the difference between Jiu Jitsu and Karate. I speak to him a week later: "Hey, how's Karate training going?". I remind him, in a laughing tone, that Karate and Jiu Jitsu are different, and give quick reasons why.

I meet the landlord (Jack), finally, weeks later. The agent introduces me. "This is Ian, he does Karate. Ian did you know Jack has done Karate for many years".
