What are your takes on allowing someone to come in to your gym to "check it out" and allowing them to roll with you? I just opened up a new MMA gym and I have had a couple of instances where someone who has trained in other local MMA gyms wants to come check me out and roll with me. Should I allow this or no?? Any policies from other gym owners would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

i personally would, my old instructor at gracie gym if you were experianced with jiu jitsu would give you a 5 minute roll and submit you like 3-4 times and then say how was that for you?? haha... good ploy most people came back wanting to learn
all the time it can be very intimidating walking in to a gym for the first time not knowing any thing

Every Gym I've checked out, I've been allowed to roll. But I always show restraint and respect but still always try my best. Gyms I've stepped into: Dynamix (Antoni Hardonk), Fairtex, Sawtelle Judo, Extreme Couture, Bomb Squad/Legends, 10th planet HQ (My home and only place I would ever accept a belt from) People want to know if the place is legit, I was 205 lbs the 1st time I rolled with Eddie and he tapped me at least 8 times in 5 min, and I've been hooked ever since.
Isn't it a rule of thumb that you never sign up at a place that is unwilling to check it out for free first? I would never enroll at a place that wouldn't do that.
I also think it's very suspect when the guy that is teaching the class doesn't roll with students regularly.
You opened up a gym as a white belt? Or are you just a Jiu Jitsu white belt but experienced in a different art?
I'd certainly be let down if you guys didn't let me roll with you. Haha :P
Yea they are checking your credibility. You need to roll with people that come to your gym. If they just whoop you they are not going to want to pay there hard earned money to you. Also if you don't roll with your students what does that say about you??? I have been teaching here at Ramstein BJJ for the last year and I make it a point to roll with every new guy. It also builds good rep with you and your students. Hope that helps.... Oh and are you really a white belt??? What are you teaching?
why does everybody have a problem with forearm chokes? my instructer alway forearm chokes me and covers my mouth and trys to makes you feel as uncomfotable as possable i really appreciate it, it simulates a real fight better nobodys gunna pussy foot around you in a real MMA fight.Quote:

I roll with everyone that comes in my Academy unless I'm sick or injured. However I don't give out free "trial" lessons, and new students (with no experinece) do not get to roll the first couple of classes, I see it as throwing a baby into a lake and then yelling "Now swim back to shore or you'll drown".
We do 1 free class at my gym and my instructor will tell the new people to watch us for a little while before they jump in. I will roll new people, you just really have to be ready to ride and then tame a bull sometimes. Spazzzzzzzs, pretty sure all my black eyes have come from rolling new people. I agree about your not rolling someone looking bad on your part because you have to be the one to prove jiu jitsus legitimacy, especially if your the "instructor." You choosing not to roll someone makes you appear "pussyish" for lack of a better word. I personally wanna know that the guy I'm shelling out my cash to can at least wupp my ass.
one of the reasons i started teaching was to just have more bodies to roll with, a instructor that doesn't roll is just wierd too me, & the best way to get students respect is to tap them a few times. but don't break there spirit. then they will hang on your every word & pay close attention. & getting called out is a part of the game, & it's fun because you don't have to go easy & you just make quick & short work of the dude. & any student will wonder how long they can last with you until you show them
Good deal guys, I appreciate all the opinions. I roll with just about anyone but I have had 2 instances now where people have come in from other gyms to test me out and then went back to their gyms. It didnt work out so well for them but it made me wonder what everyone else does in those circumstances. Oh yeah, and I am a white belt in 10th Planet, I opened my gym under my Blackbelt in Sogo Goshin Do!! It is a mix of stand up, takedowns and ground stuff but the ground game is weak there so I am trying to get my learn on in 10th Planet and I love it so far!! Thanks again.
Yup we give people a week to try out (nobody as ever made it to every classes) our fitness, jiu jitsu and wrestling classes. If they are not brand new to it they are more than welcome to roll. I roll with everybody unless I'm injured then I let some of my OGs do the talking for me :)
So far we've gained a few people from other gyms :)
Yup as long as you've got confidence why not, there is one other BJJ school in my town .. and he doesnt allow inter school training and has kicked out one of my guys. But hey if you own a school and dont let guys roll there to check it out how do they know what you have to offer, and in some cases it makes you look intimidated by new comers. If you're slick the new comer will be addicted like crack cocaine and then you gots a student.of course you get the odd meat ball, but they get weeded out fast in a good school.
Best way to teach a dog to swim is to throw it in. now might have to jump in an save it but w/e. it'll learn.
as an instructor, you HAVE to roll with all comers. if not, you run a pussy gym. yes, im serious

Always roll with everybody as long as you're not hurt or sick. I always have a open door policy to everybody. I've made a point when I opened to be on good relations with ALL the other jiu jitsu instructors throughout Charlotte. I get quite a bit of traffic now, especially being the only 10th Planet school for hundreds of miles. Be confident and know your level. I can't tell you how many other instructors I've had roll on my mats just this year....and something like 4 or 5 black belts.
i roll with everyone. we have people visit a lot. treat them well and don't worry about it. ive had people come in and get the better of me. as long as you win most of them ; ) the key is to give them something theyre not going to get somewhere else. diff techniques, thought process, ect. youve got to be open to grow. just roll with whoever.

if i were you, id set it up this way first, have them come in, have them WATCH for like 5-30 minutes, if they are still interested have them come back another day for a private 1v1 lesson and teach them the wicked basic stuff, principals and a few positions, make them pay for the really good stuff
be on the lookout for ''grasshoppers'' there are instances where people will go all around different gyms getting free time with no plans to join they just live off free lessons , they will tour an area most of the time college students will do this.
as for others coming from ''other gyms'' to test you ...i guess its best to examine people by talking with them asking questions
