Do you guys think that it's necessary to train in the GI as a beginner . I've heard that its best to gets the basics down in the gi and then move to no gi . I know that most of you guys don't train in the gi , but I'm sure some of you guys started out in one . Do you feel you are better for it ? Should I do the same , or just say fuck it and go no gi from the jump ?
Do what you want to do, IMO.
i personally like the gi more than no gi

however nogi is very essential if you wanna do mma or if you want to learn self defense
gi is good for me cuz i am a huge germaphobe, so i dont like skin on skin contact, so i wear as much as i can
nogi is very good as well, cuz it makes you work on underhooks/overhooks
i do both because when i go to a tournament, i wanna be able to do both
they both have their ups and downs imo
Not necessary, unless you want to compete in Gi tournys, Or if you plan on street fighting in your bathrobe often. I have never trained Gi, except in Judo. But do what you want to, IMO as well.Quote:

I just want to be good at jiu jitsu , but I really dont like the gi. I used to train at a Saulo Ribeiro school , it was cool but we RARELY got train no gi .. Our instructor would tell us that its important to know our "no gi options " but it wasnt necessary to practice it, didnt make since to me...
depends what ur focus is for the future, and what suits u as a person, the gi game is slower and as a result u take more time with the techniques which is why people say it makes u more technical, however the nogi game is very fast and has more wrestling to it. i personally like nogi better as i just cant get used to choking people with the gi and alot of the chokes i like to use r hard to get when wearing a gi. great for basics moves and submissions though like armbar, triangle and escaping mount and sidecontrol. my advice would be do whatever u want if u like both then do both
imo, train both, but divide the time between each however you want. if you despise the gi, then train with it once a month or something lol. i hate gi but it forces me to try different moves, eg when in the standup i cant start pulling double underhooks like id want cause of kents stiff arming my sleeves, so im forced to play with more arm drags
I wear my gi everywhere I go so I can choke people n animals out with it if necessary

I love this picture. It's of Mitsuyo Maeda training without the gi. I've heard that during the summer it was common for some judokas to train without a gi due to the excessive heat. They believed that it was a great training tool, requiring you to improve your clinch and body control without the aid of gi grips.
What I like about it is that back then, the gi was an after thought. It was a convenient and durable analog for clothing but the value of a Judoka was respected with or without it.

Even Marcelo Garcia, arguably the greatest no-gi grappler in the world, regularly says that he believes the gi is essential to building a complete game. It highlights gaps in your game, and tightens everything up, forcing technique over power or explosion. Then again, guys like Jake Shields rarely/never train in the gi, and nobody questions his legitimacy on the ground. So I'd say it's not mandatory, but definitely has strong benefits. My feeling is, since it helps build endurance anyway, do some time in the gi, and after a couple years, if you feel it's not helping, pack it away.

another thing people dont talk alot about with the gi vs nogi debate is the fact that there is a huge number of gi schools in comparison to pure nogi schools, and in gyms where they do both there is usually alot more timetabled slots for gi which in the end adds up. as far as quality training partners go aswell most of the top level pros will swear by the gi and train in it alot of the time so finding pure nogi gyms and pure nogi training partners is very hard, i can only think of two places in the whole of england.
i have this debate with gracie guys alot. IMO the gi helps train your defence a little better. you can't slip out of submissions and you have to defend against alot more, expecially if the other guy likes to use the gi alot (chokes). but for a more offensive game, no gi works for me. you have to secure lockdowns more, and you have have good position. Position before submission. They both have good qualities. i know with gi i can be more sloppy with my submissions because they can't slip out. Without the gi i have to have great position and work alot more sweeps. It is good to train with both. They both have different handles. Just my opinion.

I have to train Gi @ Gracie Barra, They do not offer a no Gi class. But I still train No Gi on my time using the 10 th planet System .
