Cauliflower Ear

I've gone for SO long without it. Then, BAM. Right before I left for Africa for two weeks...I got it. couldnt drain the SOB for so long and it just got bigger and bigger (thats what she said).
now if someone bumps my ear- its engulfs half my ear.

i know i know: wear headgear. but i dont think i should be wearing it 100% of the time on the mats...right?
i drain it about once a day and even went about 1.5 weeks without any problems- aka it growing.

then, today i was repping the log-splitter pass, his leg bumped my ear, now im looking at a ear with at LEAST 4-5ml of fluid.

anyone else had this prob and found something that works? i dont like bubble-gum ears.

U shud ask your doctor to drain em and wear headgear everytime on the mats

hmmm good idea.
i just didnt think they would be so freaking fragile. i mean really...a bump was all it took.

Brent- I drain them. i do better than a doc does anyway. my doc is a good friend, and he says i do better than he can too...they dont like moving needles around in your ear.

I talked about that to people at my dojo & they thought I was crazy like the people thought of Van Gogh. No coli yet but likely to cut em off if/when (like the biker term, Its not if you go down its when.) it happens.

Drain whatever you can, and if nothing is coming out, then most likely there isn't any fluid in there, it's just swollen. Once I get it, I drain it just once a day. I stab the thing once, get everything I can out, and then I leave it alone. If nothing is coming out, I've found that it's just still swollen, and once the swelling goes down it'll look normal again. I don't wear headgear, I've been training for 3 1/2 years intensely, and I've only gotten it 4-5 times. It sucks when you have it, but just drain it, ice it, and it'll be fine again. I can feel the difference with my fingers from it, but they look completely normal.

I am guessing every one is different, but I got it bad the first time, drained it etc, wore headgear for 2-3 weeks and since then it's be relatively fine.

They should be like any other injury techincally shouldn't they? let them fully recover and not break them down again too soon.

Think the main problem is not letting them fully recover therefore making the injury/swelling worse and worse?

I got my purple belt about 6 years ago before my plane crash accident. I had a traumatic brain injury, and lost a lot of skills. Even reading writing and basic memory retention. I have been training again...which was like starting over. I've been learning under a 2nd degree black belt (under carlos machado) and I keep pace with his 2-3 stripe blue belts. Im just being honest with myself. Im def not purple level anymore.
Since we don't use belts at my old school, I had no way to compare myself. But I have been able to in the past few weeks :)

Kendall, just because you are a blue belt level after an accident doesn't mean you should demote yourself. No fuckin' way, change that shit back to purple, you earned that thing back then and it's yours.

Should I demote myself from Black Belt when I'm frail and old and brown belts tap me? HELL NO!

ahhhh, ive been battling myself big time with this. I dont want to give a false impression to new students/training partners. plus, i dont really talk about my accident to anyone around here. i dont wanna create excuses for it...personal flaw i guess.
My instructor now would like to work with me to "belt" me (i use quotes cause i work nogi 98% of the time) and he would like to be my guidance on giving me my promotion. he never said a word to me, this is all me.

+1...I agree totally...Kendall, put the purple back!

After you drain it, try clamping a clothes peg on it overnight. My ear stopped refilling once I did that.

ahhhh...i like this idea.

It took about 6 weeks for mine to go away and get back to normal...i drained it everyday for like 2 weeks straight, WalMart phramacy must have thought i was a heion addict or something by all those needles. After i drained it i would clamp it with one those large black binder clams (the metal ones with the 2 arms on it). did that for about a week and wore gead gear for a couple weeks now its ok. and i know how to deal with it right away now
