Royler and the super fight against Eddie Bravo: “Someone’s paying that bill”

Chosen to be on a rematch against Eddie Bravo on a super fight in this year’s edition of ADCC, Royler Gracie didn’t approve the way things go on the business. On an open letter published on the press (read it here), Gracie criticized Sheik Tahnoon’s second in command, Guy Nieves, who would have revealed some confidential information about their negotiation. ADCC’s organization published a respond to Royler’s letter (read it here), and the fighter felt disrespected once again.

TATAME got in touch with the fighter to know what’s his situation with ADCC and wondering if it’s still on or not. On the interview, Royler talked about the awkward situation who he was leaded into, said he still wanna do it, but said he can’t let go with his priorities, and revealed more complex details about his deal with ADCC.

After your discussion with Guy Nieves, how are things between you and ADCC?

No one’s contacted me yet, and I have the impression that if things continue that way, it won’t happen… For now, I’m doing what I always do, living my life, because the guys are like playing with me, right? First they asked me if I wanted to fight, they published it on the following day on the internet and then sent me a contract showing how much they’d pay me, and it said it didn’t matter if I win or lose, so I can’t do that, right? I have my own life, I pay my bills and I’m not fighting anymore… If they want me to fight, they have to do things differently.

Were you upset about the fact they have published the numbers on the internet?

Oh, of course, right, man? He started making comparisons and published many things on the internet… It’s not nice to talk about money that way, right? I thought it was unprofessional of him, and I sent them a letter, and he published a respond to that letter, again mentioning numbers, so I guess now the chances of it actually happens are smaller. I guess it’s not likely, but I’m still waiting.

Is Renzo dealing with it?

I called Renzo, who’s closer to Sheik, and so far he hasn’t updated me yet, he didn’t tell me anything new about it. So let’s see if something comes up on the next days.

Did you see an award situation like that coming?

Honestly, no. He put me in s really bad position, man… It’s like I didn’t want to fight on the first place, and they’re pressuring me, but I have my priorities now, I pay many bills, I have many seminars scheduled and I’m scheduling new ones for August and September… I have my own appointments and I can’t just sit and way their call with someone on the other end of the line saying ‘oh, if you win we can arrange you a bonus prize’. I can’t count on that, I have to pay my bills, I have my appointments.

So, there won’t be a fight anymore?

Things got messy, but I still want to fight, but someone’s paying that bill.

I know Royler is multiple time World Champion, and he's a legend. But is he the dumb one in the family? Royler just sounds dumb in this interview!!!

I could understand the part where he did not want to fight in the first place and I would not call him a coward for that. People should have the option of choosing not to fight someone who they think maybe a faster, younger, stronger overall better fighter. I think in his case, his situation with the family and media maybe commanding him to make arrogant statements and war chants of him taking care of eddie, but in this case, maybe he was hoping for more of a TiTo vs. Dana White boxing match style media coverage which brings more attention to both personalities with the fight never coming to frutation.

The grammar errors in this make the writer and royler sound stupid. You would think being a member of a family who runs a million + dollar jiu jitsu empire would be able to keep his shit afloat until the match happens. He doesnt need the money, he is scared of what loosing to eddie twice in a row would do to his image, and is to prideful to admit that he cannot handle bravo. I seriously have no respect for royler anymore, I dont like him and I would rather be a white belt forever than go to a gracie school. No disrespect to anyone here who is a gracie student, this is my opinion and you are perfectly ok in disagreeing with me.

^ i go to a gracie school thats heavily tied with royler and even i agree lol... sigh. The money is such a poor excuse, the guy is freaking loaded i bet. Its got nothing to do with money...

^ I know it doesn't! I would have been ok with royler simply saying no upfront for any reason, but to say yes,go back on his word, and demand 50 grand is disgraceful. I respect what the gracie family has done for martial arts, without them we would not have 10p. But I have said this before and I will say it again, the gracie name just doesnt have the stock it once did, and this lowers the stock further at least in my eyes. It doesnt help that they already have a reputation for being money hungry already, jesus their schools are expensive to attend!

Saying you're a Gracie student is like saying you're Asian. Are you Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Hmong, Taiwanese, Vietnamese???

There are more Gracies and more Gracie affiliations than you can count. Many of them are not tied to each other at all. That's such a blanket statement.

Royler is pulling a backpedal move but don't toss in a bunch of fantastic grapplers and instructors just because one guy from one part of the lineage is acting silly. They don't all run together.

All the more reason for Royler to do this. People that don't know the difference between the literal hundreds of Gracies just assume they're all the same family and think Royler reps all of them.

My point exactly. Rather than keep their schools unified they have watered them down with branchoffs and you dont really know how closely tied that school is to the gracie family. you cant deny that the gracies are driven by money first, rather than really caring about spreading jj and this stunt shows that. im not saying that they have all together bad schools, I am saying that they are not worth the price tag at least the ones I have visited. And cmon you can buy a blue belt from them by ordering a dvd set, taping yourself doing a few drills and mailing it to them through gracie combatives or whatever and that is pure bull$hit.

Does Eddie not need to make money too... I believe he goes around doing seminars and runs a school as well ... the fact is he would have to put stuff on hold as well. for instance ... he may come here for a seminar ...but wont book until he knows if this is going to happen.... another thought ... doesn't Marcelo Garcia run a school and a web site that is updated daily ... yet he just won the worlds ... I suppose Royler either can't multi task or sacrifice a little. Both guys fighting would have to lose a little money for the potetial of making a bit of money ... but it would bring a resurgence of attention to both of them and in the long run probably make them both money. Unfortunately for Royler the attention he will gain from this if he doesn't fight now, will only be negative.

It's has to be painfully obvious to the Gracie student body that Royler's mouth wrote a check that his ass couldn't cash. My bet is that he hadn't seen any recent videos of Eddie until after he accepted & then quickly got cold feet.

You're judging all the members of a very big family based on the actions of just one of them??

Not a good philosophy to have in life. Many Gracie's are not affiliated with each other and even the one's that are I think it's a very big mistake to label them all in the same category as Royler.

Why dont you read all my posts in this thread before replying. I said later on that not all gracie schools are bad. With that said I still dont agre with the general buisness practices that they follow at least the ones that I have been to. Its money first, jj later. If you go to a gracie school that gives you your moneys worth and has quality instruction than I am glad you are getting the training you pay for. Buti have yet to find one in my area thats worth it. now can anyone explain why if carlos and renzo dont like the gracie combatives thing why is it even out there? Do they really have no control over what products have their names on it?

Actually I did read all your posts (Including the one quoted above) and it still seems to me like your lumping an entire family under one banner.

I can also explain to you exactly why why Carlos and Renzo don't have any control over the Gracie Combatives thing. Rorian's branch of the family trademarked the term 'Gracie Jiu-jitsu'. That is why other Gracie's have to advertise their school as 'Brazilian Jiu-jitsu'. Did you really not know of the huge dispute over that? Caused quite a stir in the family. Not hard to see why if only Rorian's side of the family can call what they do Gracie-Jiu-jitsu. Maybe you should research these things abit more before getting so easily annoyed.

Rorian trademarked the term "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu." No one else on Helio's side or Carlos' side has any control over that. Not only on Carlos' side, but there are people on Helio's side that aren't happy with Rorian's Gracie Academy and its practices. Nothing anyone can do about it though.

Why is it out there? Well, Rorian thought it would be a good way to make money, in my opinion. It also does have it's benefits for certain people. Asking why Renzo can't do anything about it is like asking why I can't stop my cousin who lives on the other side of America from opening a McDonalds.

So let me correct myself.... I would rather be a white belt forever than go to a ROYLER gracie school. Are you happy now?

Also guess what? I also have a long term girlfriend, work full time, train BJJ, Boxing and generally have a life outside of Jiu-jitsu. So do most people who train. Dosen't mean you have to be ignorant of the history. Did you not have time to watch UFC 1 either? A little bit if research is all that is needed. Dosen't take very long either.

Oh shit. He trains at Roger's that's awesome. Roger is the only person to ever win ADCC weight division and Absolute division by submission in every match. I'm so excited he'll be returning to no-gi at ADCC this year. In the 2009 Worlds he also won every match at his weight and Absolute by sub, but he did it with the same sub. Cross choke from mount.

No worrys dude I wasn't offended. I just felt some of your statements were misguided. I know you wern't implying I didn't have a life either. As I said in my post most of us have very busy lives outside BJJ so you're not the only one. Like the saying goes to understand the present you need to understand the past.
