I'm 30 and about to finally start competing :) But I have the Benjamin Button syndrome and most people think I'm 24 and I actually feel more like 24 then 30. But what age do most people stop competing? It seems like it would be hard to stop or want to stop. Thoughts?
Probably when everything stops working.

As long as you can. Take Louis "old man" Ho's example and just keep on competing with the younger guys, because technique beats strength every time!
I'm not sure how old Saulo Ribero is but he's got to be in his 40's and just retired last year.
I just turned 40 and I roll and compete with guys from age 18 and up.
Damn bro, I thought you were younger too. I'm headed towards 36 and you got to see my massive amount of injuries saturday.The thing is, everyday I wake up wanting to compete. I guess the want never stops. I'd say as long as you can as well.

That's why they have Master and Director Divisions.
I'm wanting to open my own school one day soon so I think its important to compete and keep competing. Also to advance in the 10th planet system you have to compete and win and be a blue belt to even get to start teaching. I've been practicing the 10th planet system for around a month and 1/2 with some friends but have been studying it for awhile . I've already seen a large improvement in my jiu jitsu.
i think the reason some people stop competing in various things, is because they never really enjoyed them in the first place. perhaps they were just trying to prove themselves or get a gold medal, make a career, impress their parents or whatever...
i mean look at wrestling... i cant say alot about it cause im not american, but when do wrestlers stop competing?
Usually when High School ends. Unless your good enough to compete in college. Which there are a limited amount of wrestling programs left in college.Quote:

he dominates at tournies, even though he has to go in the old old man age bracket. he could probably dominate the normal divisions if he lied about his age though.
When your body no longer allows you too. That could be 18 or 80. There was a guy that I used to see at NAGA that couldnt have been any younger than 60 and he was still competing. I have a guy in his forties that is going to compete in his first grappling tournament this year. My dad would still compete if he didnt have three fused vertebrea in his neck and he is 56
You're 30? Holy shit! I don't think you should put an age on it. Just have good training partners that will help take care of your body and won't try and rip limbs off. Also, do proper warm ups and stretching every time you start to roll.
I'm 31. And reading how Louis copes and adapts to his injuries definitely inspired me to figure out ways to work around my injures rather than plowing through them or even just sitting it all out. Thanks Louis.
I'm also 31. I won't quit until my body won't let me train anymore. I've already had a bunch of injuries, but my love for jiujitsu is just too strong.
32 here, I feel like I'm still in my early 20's, minus the presence of injuries now. So far wearing wrestler gel knee pads, ear guards, motocross light rib protector, cup, and mouth guard seem to be keeping me more injury resistant =D. Also I firmly believe that solid warm ups then stretching before rolling will keep my injuries as minimal as possible. Any other expert advice on how to train and roll injury free?

I'm 39 and rolling some say I look younger.. I have not yet competed but getting there. I have lower back pains my right leg will not bend all the way plus I have like 5 operations on that right leg including the ankle.. oh, yes 39 and rolling, I feel great after a days work out.. but later I feel the pain..lol don't matter I just take some aleve and suck it up and keep going until the next day to repeat the same thing. We all love the art that's what keeps us going back for more.

There are people in my life who don't understand why I'd want to put myself in a situation, multiple times a day, 3-6 days a week, where people try to kick, punch, choke me, and bend my limbs in positions where they're not supposed to bend. I could go into the health benefits of doing any sport. I could get into the mental acuity and self-discipline it takes to stay calm and focused in an emotionally heightened *due to the fight or flight syndrome caused by combat,* I could even go into the "increased chances of survival in an actual confrontation," *notice I said "increased and NOT guarantee'd" Sorry to burst the martial arts bubble for those who believe a black belt will stop bullets, or a knife, or enables one to consistently win fights vs multiple attackers.Quote:

I'm 31 and compete all the time. I do BJJ tournaments constantly, and I have a few sambo tourneys coming up, along with a san shou fight.
My body isn't quite the same as it used to be, but it's not bad, either.

My first JJ comp was when I was 29. I got completely smoked by a 17-year-old wrestler with a Gracie-Barra tattoo... in the novice division. I have a picture of him laying on top of me in my facebook, which was pretty much the whole match.
Im 23 compete in jj comps and want to do mma though I only have a year of training. I feel like I need to train hard so I can make to most out of my good years. Until your at least 35 the word retire shouldnt even be in your vocabulary.

i'm in my mid 40's and plan to keep going ,God willing , i want to learn all i can ,master this and get a major championship , it is tough tho having people trying to hurt ya all the time and work a tough schedule ,workout / exercise and do no gi jiu jitsu
Dude, just look at eddie.. hes got a match at the adcc coming up and hes what? late 50's.. early 60's? :P just kidding.. but really id say you've still got plenty of time.. typically people hit there physical peak at what? 30-35? and then u still have years to keep perfecting the technique which will just make u even better. when you think youre getting too old.. just go check out some more videos of helio..
