My rubberguard story...

I've been training with a guy for about seven years. He has always been the type to be doubtful of anything new. He trains with the hit squad in st. Louis, mo. (until they sold to finneys). He learned one move there that he swore up and down would defeat the rubberguard everytime. And everytime I pulled rubberguard on someone he would loudly exclaim "don't do that rubberguard shit it doesn't work!!" but despite his teasing I continued to learn and study it... One day he and I rolled together for the first time in probably a year or so... And during the roll he got into my guard and of course I threw in rubberguard... He looked up at me for a second, smirked, and said "I was waiting on you to do that". Then, he went for his hit squad rubberguard destroyer move. And then, he was shocked ad hell when he was still caught... The story ends with him tapping due to a gogoplata and me teaching him why his super move didn't work and that the rubberguard isn't just throwing your leg up... One more person turned into a believer!!

I've discovered that the Asians HAVE discovered the way to destroy the rubber guard. It is a brutal technique isn't it? Subsequently, this flavor of chips is roughly translated into English as "Happy Smash Thank You."

It was basically good posture and lunging forward deeper into the guard... According to him Matt Hughes had told him to use this anytime someone uses the rubberguard and it will always destroy it... But this is his story. I saw something similar that Ken primola was doing on his defense against the rubberguard video

I don't think they take into account the foot on the hip prevents that from happening so easily... I think people are practicing escaping rubberguard on people who don't really understand the rubberguard... They are just grabbing their leg and letting someone practice popping it off... Not sure though... Just my theory

It's funny to me that everytime I see a video that shows how to defeat the rubber guard, the person doing the rubber guard has really sloppy technique. Eddie is the first to admit in his videos that any guard can be defeated and nothing works all the time. So I'm always on the look out for videos that show how to beat the rubber guard. I just never seem to see one where the person doing the rubber guard does it correctly.

Yeah, he did the same thing to me when I was learning a bunch of judo techniques to combat wrestling... Which he is a wrestler... He would tell me to not go for moves like ippon sungagi... Or drop sunagi or whatever it's called until i started tossing him through the air with my "gay judo moves"

Absolutely! It was an amazing experience

I don't get how people can teach their students that "any move can be countered," and then 20 minutes later, claim to have "proven" that RG doesn't work by showing one counter to one form of RG. If you try to armbar me from guard, I can pass if I do it properly, so I guess armbars don't work either.. What's funny is when someone (in this case you) counters their counter, because they can't say "that doesn't prove anything". Their own logic traps them into stupid conclusions.

Also, as a side note, my instructor (a direct disciple of Royler) has been less adamant about his anti-RG attitude. He always lets me practice what I want, but you can tell that he thinks it is a waste of time. Recently, though, while he won't comment on pure RG techniques, he will comment on transitions to other positions and subs. He had a lot to say about going mission control to armbar (various crocs) and chill dog to oma.

I've never been a rubber guard disbeliever, but I've also never had anyone show me proper rubber guard, so it has historically never worked. HOWEVER, I have started using it over the last couple of months after studying the books super close, and I destroy with it now.
