I sparred with a new guy last night, who was quite large and very strong. It was like sparring with a statue! He even just lay there and watched me try to break his guard (driving my elbows into his thighs) before grabbing my arm and wrenching it into a kimura - I saw the kimura coming and had it tucked in AND holding onto it with my other hand, to no avail...
I just wanted to moan about it I guess!

For me I've found that being fast, putting the pressure on and wearing down a big guy is the only way to go.
Just fight for top like a pitbull and once there, constantly transition from top to side (judo or twister) to north/ south slipping in fake out sub attempts just to make them work, until they tire out enough for a can crusher or side arm choke.
Everybody's neck gives eventually.

The guard pass you attempted will never work on anyone good. You need to move your hips to create space. Ask your instructor to show you kimura defenses.

Not really. I've been training for years, and I know lots about guard passing and kimura defence. That's the whole point of this thread to be honest, that sometimes you come up against an opponent who can beast out of any position, and with enough strength can simply force you into submissions, like when an adult spars a child. I guess that's why lightweights don't normally compete against heavyweights (except in absolute!).Quote:

That's not how you break someone's guard. That might work on some people but usually, just relying on your elbows will either be ineffective or just lead to a scramble since your hip work isn't setting you up for a pass. More than likely you got kimura-ed because you left your wrist dangling out while you were trying to grind out his thighs and then your elbow slipped and flared out. With his potential grip strength you are just giving up kimuras and push arm triangles.Quote:

It's one of those weird details that tons of people still do after several years of training. Even people that know better will sometimes slip back into just grinding the thighs to break guard.
Technique > Strength... Technique + Strength > Technique alone.
Yup, but I don't let that factor into my mind set when I'm training. I roll with Brandon Woolsey. That dude is twice my size and we still have awesome rolls together. Point is, if a guy is twice your size and rolling with you to out strength you, he's not learning anything, and you're learning how to keep your targets "small." Sure you get smashed more than you smash, but the best way to improve is to roll with people with better technique, more strength, etc than you. Enjoy the process.Quote:

I completely agree.. And my favorite people BY FAR to roll with are guys much stronger/bigger than me. Im about 135 and the person i most often roll with is 265 and 12x stronger than me.. Granted.. he destroys me almost every time.. I can definitely see potential to beat him with the right strategy. (typically if i can get him into a leglock battle with me, or work some top position on him) but i just feel like the bigger the gap in strength.. the more it forces me to use my technique.. and plus it always feels GREAT once i get used to that and then get to go compete in my weight class..Quote:

Most of the time bigger guys dont have a good high guard. The most dangerous closed guard ive seen from a strong guy involves the anaconda choke from guard, that can get me.
Against this case study, id say relax and dont try so hard to break - he will most likely have to open to attack. Let me know if that is not the case and your dealing with a high level closed guard, but let him open and force half guard. One of my go-to's, cause not a whole lot of people at my school can fuck with me without opening their guard.
Now against big strong guys in general, when NOT in their guard, OMOPLATAAAAA
