I have been on the Paleo diet for about three weeks and I feel fucking great. I have followed it about 90%. I did feel like shit for the first 4 or 5 days but since then only positive results. Anyone else experience the same?

Ive been wanting to try it let me know how its goin for you :)
Chris, Check out the book "Paleo Diet For Athletes". The author is a marathon runner and makes some slight modifications to the traditional Paleo diet for the intense nature of his training. I think it flows over to Jiu Jitsu and MMA training very well:)
Voted the worst diet overall by the US News Rankings
http://health.usnews.com/best-diet/best-overall-diets
while i do not recommend a strict adherence to the paleo diet... i will say the usnews is backed by the american heart association and american diabetes association who still push the largely false cholesterol hypothesis... so it should be no wonder the paleo diet is seen as unhealthy.
I've been on a modified version of the Paleo diet for 3 years, one of the best decisions I've made.
I try to keep an open mind but I remain pretty skeptical of the diet. If anyone can provide more than a youtube video or anecdotal reports I'd be willing to listen.
I know all these bad associations! Well where's this diets proof....where's its studies? I can tell you there's a big lack of studies on this diet!!! Don't be fooled here there's people making money on this diet too!!! Everybody's trying to grab the mighty dollars...this diet is no different than any other...its another fad diet. But if it helps you or somebody else eat better,, great!
yup no real studies directly on this diet... fad diet yes. and "experts" are everywhere. funny how that works, ive studied nutrition for 5 years and would never dream of calling myself anything like that.. seems the more i learn the more i find out how little i know and how little we truly know about nutrition).
DASH diet is ranked highly on that website for example... but actual studies show sodium restriction only lowers blood pressure by about 6-8 pts.. tell that to a hypertensive person eating super bland foods... Not to mention the rising studies finding correlation with grains and heart disease.. add to that the lack of conclusive studies on saturated fat and heart disease
however for those who do not believe in the lipid hypothesis.. the paleo diet provides a great foundation.
Regardless of the lack of studies, think about this. It's a proven fact that since the beginning of recorded history, all the way up to the agricultural revolution, there were virtually no diseases other than those caused by infections and cross contamination of food/wounds. Keep in mind I say virtually. Before the agricultural revolution, things like diabetes didnt exist. It took us from a diet that mainly consisted of nutrient dense fruits and veggies, and tons and tons of muscle building proteins; to a diet that was mainly supplemented by unlimited access to carbohydrates. That when put side by side with fruits/veggies/meats are incredibly lacking in nutrients. You can check that here if you dont believe me, http://nutritiondata.self.com/ There is literally nothing in grains and dairy that you cannot get from fruits, veggies, and meat.
If you're at all curious about any of this and dont want to take information from a party that stands to make money, take a look at this article written in 1987 by Jared Diamond (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jared_Diamond) http://www.ditext.com/diamond/mistake.html
Great stuff. I'm a biology major with a minor in nutrition and Paleo is the best diet that I've seen around. Fruits + veggies = plenty of fiber, water soluble vitamins, sugar, minerals..... Meats = fats/protein, fat soluble vitamins, minerals.... everything you need. Whoever said the Paleo for Athletes knows what's up, great stuff. I find it hard to get the calories necessary to train as hard as I do (MMA, not just JJ, 5 days a week) just eating paleo though, and that's what Paleo for Athletes talks about.
From that article... "A true Paleo diet might be a great option: very lean, pure meats, lots of wild plants. The modern approximations … are far from it."
A true paleo diet concerns itself with the quality of the meat and how it was raised. That factor has a drastic effect in the health benefits and/or hazards of the food you are eating. Just eating grocery store hamburger on lettuce (which is basically what the diet was rated against) is not a paleo diet.
Wow, that article ranks the slim fast diet at #10. How many top level athletes function on the Slim Fast diet?
a minor modification that i think is healthier is the "slow carb diet" that Tim Ferriss loves, it adds in some things like beans and I think it help cover some problems with the Paleo system..

thanks for the info guys
my paleo breakfast this morning.
4 eggs, tomato and mushroom. I used to eat cereals or toast for breakfast.

That looks god damn delicious!
Also, on a side note, there is absolutely nothing in grains/dairy that cannot be gotten from fruits/veggies/lean grass-fed and wild caught meat.
not a lot of studies that i know of, but the crossfit i work at definitely suggests this diet. all i have to vouch for it is my experiences and those reported by clients. which have continued to be positive.
they have all reported having more energy throughout the day, quicker recovery times and favorable body re-composition.
personally i am strict on the general things and much looser on specifics. for example, i know people that will only touch grass fed/ free range type meat. i have found the general guidelines of the diet to be very practical, i dont have a lot of kitchen access, so i eat on the go a lot, if i stick to meat and veggies with some fruit (which you can get most places) i feel like i get most of the benefits of the paleo diet. of course when i can i like to cook for myself.
oh, i try to "zone it" as much as i can as well.
I basically started the diet for those reasons. More energy, faster recovery time, and over all better health. I'm 5"8 and only 155 lbs so it clearly was not for weight loss. I figured it had to be better for me than all the processed foods I was eating and so far the results are all positive
I've been on the Paleo for about 4 - 5 months and love it.
I only ear peanuts... and corn... those both can be eaten raw, so I didn't cut them out.Quote:

Is Almond milk not allowed? It's not really milk.
U can eat nuts, not legumes. Just Google it. There are recipes all over the interwebs.Quote:

I picked up the book "The 4-Hour body" this morning. We shall see what happens.
Don't forget hemp milk too, but I have to say that Whole Foods organic almond milk is the tastiest nut milk ever.
Mike, enjoy the book, it's great shit and I think Tim will be on Joe's podcast sometime this year so maybe he'll get some extra info out of him :)
Thank guys for all the helpful info. I realize that this is not just a diet for me. Like starting Jitz this is a life style change. I am very excited about my future.
I have only been a member of the forums for a few months now but my experience interacting with you guys has been awesome. This forum and 10th planet is like one big extended family. Thank you for taking me in. Thank you so much for your support.
awesome, glad to help and GL bro :)
Hmm...well I would only argue that this dietary approach
probably works great for some, but is not right for all.
Along similar lines are the ideas behind the blood type diet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type_diet
I think that more accurately represents all people.
While Paleo may be right for some, I doubt it is right
for all.
It's long been observed that people react different
to all sorts of diets, drugs, and environmental influences.
Some folks smoke their whole life and seemingly never
see a detrimental side to it, while others have obvious
evidence that it caused cancer in their lungs. That is
a bit of an extreme example...yet it's true. What kills
one man makes another stronger. I think the key would
be to look at your own history and your health and habits,
then start to filter out good and bad.
Much like the Paleo diet, the blood type diet explores
the possibility that we are not eating what we were
"meant" to eat. Only it provides more options and flexibility
in it's theories, due to the fact that we do not all function
the same way. Just two cents here.
Well put Stephen
