Videos from my 2 state Judo titles from back in the day.

I was looking for a particular video today as I surfing through youtube and stumbled across these (one of my students had them posted) so I thought I'd share.

The first is from 2000 when I won the Open Division (Open is esentially the absolute division in Judo). The way it works in NYS is there are 6 regions all with regional championships, the regions champs fight a month or two later at the Empire State Games, all round robin.

Yes I was a super heavy weight back then ;)

The next one was in 2006, the last time I stepped on a Judo competition mat, I announced my retirement right before, and told my regional coach I taking home the gold today, don't blink I don't plan on being out there long, its too fucking hot in here. I won the Super Heavy Weight division with my longest match being just over a minute, the rest were under 20 secs each, with the finals being about 6 secs. Sorry no music on this one.

AJ judo has had many rule changes over the yrs, which is taking away from the sport. When I first started with Chris we would go to a lot of judo tournaments. Now bc of the changes I havent been to one in 3yrs.

A number of reasons; rule changes, the distancing of the art of Judo from its roots, more importanly I wanted to put more energy into my coaching and raise the bar on my teaching ability, and on learning something diffrent (this was right aroound the time that I started reading Eddies philosphy on Jiu Jitsu on the Underground), and soon after picked up Jiu Jitsu Unleashed, and its been ON every since.

Myself and my partner Wally (and a few of my students as well) have gone to MFS to train a few times. Wally and I were there for the first Instructor training program and we were one of the first affiliates.

I did a little judo back in the day, but it's been a while. What are the rule changes? Anybody mind sharing?

I only did it for a summer, but its fun! I bought my bro Karo's MMA Judo book a little while ago. It's bad ass! I want to learn me some no gi Judo...

I was lucky enough to get sent there for level 1 around the IFL time. I had fun but the guy with me came back with a huge tattoo of a map on his leg put on their with Tim Silvia's shin.

That last ashi waza in the first video, I think it was kouchi gari, was fucking sick. And those drop seois were soooo much better than you normally see. Awesome job.

I have my first sambo tourney in a week, and then my first judo tourney in about a month. Can't wait.

Unfortunately no. The last time I fought in Sambo was in Switzerland in 2006 at the Swiss Sambo Open my buddy got his camera jacked the 2nd day of the event with over and hour of footage of both him and I from the 1st day of the event. Poor guy spent about $300 on it the week before we left.

Damn dude. Pardon the interview, but by lifestyle change, do you mean eating better? I assume since you compete you always stayed active and worked out. Or not? IDK man, I want a lifestyle change too, but I'm not sure what direction to go.

Sucks to hear about that camera and the lost footage.

I always trained and worked out, haven't stopped since I was 10 years old. I always dieted and ate well by most standards(I was constantly up in down in large volumes of weight), but it was a matter of finding what works for my body and sticking with it for the rest of my life, I had 3 nutritionist before I met one that understood, high caloric diets don't always fuel everyone the same way. My body functions way better with less calories than more. Luckily the nutritionist worked with athletes and understood the difference in training that focuses on the use of economy of motion. His point was you train your body to have efficient output of energy, so if I have a higher caloric intake, I will have a surplus at the end of the day, well at least thats how I understood it at the time. So for nearly 3 years I've used a modified paleo diet, all organic all natural and try not to take anything synthetic into my body.
