almost lost my arm from mrsa. Before I even started training at a gym. Got it while working at an aquarium and got attacked by a sea urchin poked pretty badly and guess the mrsa was already on my skin. The MD said that about 30% of people in San Francisco and pretty much any other big city have mrsa on their skin. There was a mix up at the lab that was culturing it, I didn't respond to the first antibiotic and I was allergic to another. started as a small puncture wound on my left elbow and my entire arm ended up red and swollen to almost double its size. They had to cut it open and do some scraping and digging but they found a drug that worked and I still have both arms.
my cousin cut his foot and walked into a public toilet in thongs, few weeks later was in hospital with golden staph. Got to the stage where the doctors said we can't do anything else, but he pushed through with a full recovery.
I've had it before and I can't say that it was any where near as bad as some of the stories I've heard. Just really unsightly and embarrassing. No fever, no lengthy hospital visit...just unsightly pimple looking things that took forever to get rid of.
Sam you know how you got it? I have never had it ( knock on wood ) one reason for long sleeves and pants or tights, dunno if that blocks it but seems to help :-/ and if you have a dirty gym (like not bleaching matts a few times everyday) or dirty people to train with your chances are higher. I won't even roll with someone if they are dirty/smelly. sorry man that stuff is horrible
I've had 6 knee surgeries in the last 2 years and I had staph inside my right knee which tore up the cartilage in the knee. I could have died from the infection if it had gotten into my blood stream and spread to my lungs or brain.
Colloidal Silver kills staph as well as a light treatment that was developed here in Hungary called the Bioptron light. Between the two and the antibiotic that the doctor prescribed I was able to get rid of the infection and avoid a sceptic surgery to get rid of it that might have left me with a fixated leg that would not bend at the knee.
Now, I am waiting to meet with the #1 doctor in this country to see about corrective surgery so that I will hopefully be able to walk without a cane and finally get back to training full time !
fuck this scary shit, im never training again.
i had golden staff just from a small cut ended up in hospital for 3 weeks and had an operation.. was extremly painful. but i didnt ever get it back which is good (because some people get it back after an operation etc)
Isn't anything to the time I fell off of a building 5 floors high. Just proof that humans can't fly no matter if you have your eyes closed or not.
to many dirty sobs out there
that dont wash!
Staph....my arch nemesis. Got it behind my calf at the end of last year. Thought it was a beast mode spider bite and kind of ignored it for a couple days. It got to the point where I couldn't walk and almost lost my leg! Lost over a month of training. Fast forward to July and I get it again after a Gi night on my neck... The difference this time is I handled it immediently and only sat out maybe 2 weeks. I am honestly in the dark as to why this keeps happening. After every roll, I go straight to a shower and lather my whole body in antibacterial soap. Staph is just the man trying to hold me down, which isn't physically possible.
I had the unfortunate run-in with staph, but it wasn't because of a dirty gym heck I'm the guy that cleans it so I know its clean, but rather it was DIRTY PPL we use 2 have this guy come in from his dirty job str8 from work without showering when I 1st started training I mean this guy was like PIG PEN from the Charlie Brown movies so I roll with the guy and the next couple of day the inside of my left knee gets this huge welt lookin thing on it I thought it was a bruise but it was staph we caught it B4 it got 2 out of hand though
Only one incident of staph at my gym and it was one guy who competed at a tournament held at a local Judo gym. They had a kids program, so god knows what he was getting his face rubbed into on those mats.
I got MRSA on the back of my leg right on those ligements on your hamstring and it was a painful experience took a month to recover fully. Im a guy that takes 2-3 showers a day and showers after lifting and training the reason I got it is because a young kid brought it up to the gym and I was helping him with his technique. I noticed a little what looked to be an infected hair so i squeezed it and it wouldnt pop and 3 days after that it got bigger and my leg swelled about 2x its noraml size. I probably had about an inch deep hole in my leg. People if your gym doesn't have a shower get some defense wipes to put in your bag or carry cotton balls and rubbing alcohol with you.
Super Body Care products FTW!
One of my old training partners and team mates in AZ had a pimple on his knee a few years ago. He couldnt pop it and didnt think anything of it. Soon, he started to have pain in his joint and around the pimple. He ignored it and tried to fight through the pain....soon the pain got so bad, he couldnt even stand up on that leg. His wife (at the time) had to rush him to the ER. After a quick check, the doc said he had MRSA. They told him they had to drain his knee (joint) and put him on antibiotics. The doc said he waited so long, that if they drained it and the fluid was couldd they would have to remove his lower leg. If it was clear, chances are the antibiotics would do the trick...dont Fuck around with staph and mrsa - when in doubt, check w your doc.
Honestly, I think new guys needs to hear either clean your shit or I will make you sit. If you make them sit and they still dont, then kick them out. I would be furious if I or a couple of the guys at the gym got staph when I know we all or most all strive to stay clean. I always wash my gear and use antibacterial soaps. I shower before and after practices, especially if ive been active or dirty that day at all.
Agree. But keep in mind, my buddies gym was full of Pro and Experienced guys and he still got it. You are absolutely right, gotta take preventitive measures, but it still happens sometimes. Best thing is to do all the preventitive stuff, skin check yourself and know the signs.
I also implement a mandatory 5 day off cycle after a tournament at my place. Guys bring home all kind of crazy shit from tournaments and fights.
I had Staph on my left elbow in the summer of 2009... I got it from rolling on a carpet with my brother when I already had an open scratch on it... I had no medical insurance & my Mom (who is a nurse) said I needed to go have it lanced so they could get the infection out... I said "Fuck that shit" I wasn't about to pay a huge medical bill... So I went & got two wash cloths & wet them, one under hot water & the other under cold water... I put soap in the hot one and begin to scrub the infection which softened the surface of the skin... I put the cold wash cloth in my mouth & bit down hard!!! I started squeezing that fucker as hard as I could for about a minute and a half & then finally: BOOM!! This white infectious core shot out of my elbow at a speed that had to be at least 200 mph & slammed right into my bathroom mirror... It bled out like a son of a bitch so I had to hold pressure on it to stop the bleeding & when it finally did, I put anti-biotic ointment on it & wrapped it up with a huge bandage & medical tape... I had a small crater in my arm for several weeks... I guess the moral of this story is: buy medical insurance or be prepared to hurt ALOT!!!
i got staph the old fashion way, from the gym. i got mat burn that opened up enough to get bacteria in it and while i showered after it wasn't with antibacterial soap, so i got the infection. felt terrible and started to look like i was falling apart with the sores popping up all over the place. went to the doctor got antibiotics, it went away without ever getting too scary. there was a kid in my area that died from it a few years ago, so it's taken pretty seriously here it seems.
Lol
wow...guess I'm not the only one.....i had this infection two weeks ago, got it cultured, they said it wasn't MRSA, took keflex, it cleared up, now its back like muthafuckin Dr. Evil. I'm taking a week off work while I dose up on antibiotics.....Septra sucks tho. Thanks to all for sharing.....
Medical insurance or not, it hurts like shit either way. My girlfriends mom is my doctor thankfully. She cut the first one open and drained it 4 times before it went away. 2nd one went away after one drainage because I knew this time around to handle it asap. Moral of the story: Handle infections sooner rather than later.
Getting it cut opened and drained hurts and the one good think staph isn't as resistant as mrsa is. Like everyone says make sure your equipment is getting cleaned regularly to cut down on the risk, because once you get it you are more prone to catch it again. As soon as you see a questionable mark get it checked out because if you wait then you probably will get it lanced and have longer recovery time.
Have you heard about Cole Escovedo's staph infection? Nearly paralyzed him :(

Ha! This thread is not a good first sign for anyone new looking to get into grapplin', Haha!
"I think ima Hapkido instead!"
Just sayin'.
Defense soap to the rescue!! And apparently, cranberry juice makes the infection unable to bind.
I'm glad to hear you didn't lose your arm altogether or end up septic in an ICU.
Note for others from a health care professional:
***DON'T TRY TO "POP" A STAPH INFECTION!!!*** Your immune system works very hard to wall off the infection while it's being fought; that's why it forms a pocket of material (when the infection is isolated and not already systemic or tunneling). Abcesses, infected joints, and boils need to be drained with a sterile needle to prevent introducing bacteria into the blood stream. If it can't be drained with a syringe it needs to be opened surgically and irrigated very well. Popping an infected cyst or abcess opens the capsule that has formed and allows blood and bacteria to mix -- which allows a port of entry for the bacteria to go system-wide. Yeah the ER copay sucks balls if you don't have insurance but an ICU costs a lot more and being dead will really slow down your jiu jitsu game. :)
