Osae-Komi-Waza (hold-down techniques)


In an effort to help educate the new white belt or whomever, I'm listing below the names & types of "Ground Holds" I've come across. I apologize before hand to the more knowledgeable if any of these are not correct. Please feel free to correct anything that needs to be corrected & help educate the forum. Thanks :)


1. Top Mount

Full Mount (center of torso)
High Mount (high on chest)
Low Mount with Hooks (low on hips)
Leg Mount with Leg-Triangle (above the knees)
Reverse Mount
S Mount
Monkey Mount
Tate-Shiho-Gatame

2. Back Mount

3. Side Mount

I'm with this guy... it has nothing to do with respect. Don't get all defensive just because someone doesn't want to learn the japanese Judo newaza names.

Knee on face

While I appreciate the list, I also cannot understand
positions when I have no idea what they say or mean.

While I could look up every position that I don't know,
it would be easier to know the English translation/name
for them, especially since those are the names I would
be using when in training and trying to explain them.

Was that disrespect toward you? Or toward an inanimate word?
In either case, seems a little silly to me.

I'm sure you also wear a Gi while you're executing these positions, since you're all about respect. People always want to sound so cool by using the japanese names knowing there's a translation in English. If you were talking to a japanese guy then it would make sense.

For sure.. I call it knee on face, but I love the position.
