Halfguard guillotine defence

Hi all you 10th planet jiu jitsu maniacs!!

First of all I want to thank Eddie and the whole 10th planet for improving my game!

Second of all I want to say sorry for my english writing skills. Im from Finland so let us all forgive me...

I have a problem. At my gym people don't really know 10th planet tekniques. So when i do lockdown in half I usually get easy double under hooks and whip up. Sometimes guys sit up in my half. When that happens I sit up with them and take the under hooks or at least one under hook (the meaningful one). Now the problem is this! There are couple of guys who take wicked guillotine on me when i post up after whip up. And its arm in of course (they do know how to use the wizzer on me). Then they just sit and wait for me to do the old school. When I do that i'm dead!

I did try to find video or something to deal with this but did not find any.

Do i just have to abandon my primary road when there is wrist under my chin and try electric chair or something? Please help me in this one.

keep the ear closer to their abdomen and good posture. the guys that snap on a guillotine fast and tight still catch me but a lot of the time the posture prevents their sub and if they persist i usually switch to a mechanic sweep. just a white belt but hope this helps.

You really need to strengthen the double unders and it starts back at the whip up.
Watch Einstein's all stars dvd special features where he covers whipping up basics, using the whip up momentum tuck your head deep into their abdominal region and in the centre of your underhooks, squeezing tightly to remove the gaps your opponent uses to get in.
It doesn't happen often at all but when someone strong manages to posture up from here I hold the double unders and when they attempt to force their way through I take old school or move to dog fight and transition from there.
This is just the opinion of another white belt but I havn't been caught with a guillotine from this area in I really can't remember.

this happens to me to its so annoying i try to pass but their legs are all ready around me haha ! i to would like to know defense for this ! Lets see how long it takes chris herzog to answer with one line haha !

Mechanic for me, or fake the electric chair one way then when they base out come back up for oldschool.(Dipset)

LOL, sorry guys been busy today. The best suggestions have all ready been given: Mechanic Sweep (for arm in guillotine), Boa series are great for preventing the guillotine, also the Electric Clinch to Electric Chair is another great option as well.

If they're a darce/necktie player, your main focus is never let them connect their hands. Bringing the mechanic my first option to test his reactions, then either finish or transition. If he connects his hands you have the hardest escape possible.

You got to be prepared to defend the neck at all times by framing until you are in the right spot to get to dogfight or for Old school, but then again going back and forth ( dip setting) is always necessary always remembering not to ever let them get their left arm around your neck at all times, especially against gangster guillotine fighters in the dojo. I have spent ages on just good habits in halfguard ( Thankyou Brent Little). A combination of all the suggestions is great I think. Boa has to be really low and the use of your left arm to swim in to mechanic and back again to old school or dogfight is key for me surviving the attack inside my own half guard. You cannot break concentration ever inside that position. As a guillotine enthusiast, I know what I am looking for to take the choke into effect. Then I just reverse engineer it to work on the defences to it too. Works most of the time but you can still get caught...thats what makes it jiu jitsu!

I think I now understand the mistake. I haw been too committed for the old school. I just haw to abandon that road and do something else. I think I start to drill the mechanic next.

LOL...Sorry for dbl post guys...I thought I was properly using the "embed video" method, but evidently not ;)

The best part about hitting the mechanic sweep is that it makes them more hesitant to leave their arm inside. As soon as you block their hand grip they'll grip fight to get their arm out before they get swept again, they totally back off of the submission attempt just to block the sweep.

Old school is exactly as the name implies...old. It's good on the fly, but with even a hint of it coming at you it's pretty easy to stop. All the good troubleshoots are listed here, I prefer the Boa myself, if they're gonna commit to the sub that much, I'll take the sweep with my head in and work it out once I have position.

Compella: Do you have any competition videos of yourself, I know way off topic but I didn't wanna start a whole new thread.

The tips were great ! they worked great but i get caught ocassionally still are there any last minute things we can do once there on top and have a guilotine on ? e.g. some sweep straight to side control or some godly move which can unlock there hands ! or even something that keeps them from finishing it ?

Here's a secret one person told me a long time ago for Guillotine defense from any position. Mastering this escape[prevention], you should be able to avoid 98% of the guillo's out there...

The Secret: Before they connect their hands together, shake his right hand with your right, or his left hand with your left[whichever hand is the threat]. You will be amazed at how you'll never have to worry about the guillotine ever again.

[Well 98% of the time you won't have to worry about it.. There's one guy at our guy that's about 210 lbs and all the weight is in those biceps of his. There's not a lot of people like that. If they connect their hands before you were able to defend, well then you got to work on guillo escapes once captured. There's a difference between prevention and escape once caught.]

So when someone yells "Shake hands!!" They are telling you that the guillo is about to be dropped on you.
