Eddie! Question for you / Older guys doing 10th P JJ

Eddie - Rob here. It was really great to see you guest teach at 10th Planet Van Nuys this past Monday Aug 15th. It was my first time seeing you in person and really was blown away. Two questions for you. 1.) What kind of advice can you give your older students (I’m 40) who are fairly new to JJ training? 2.) In your opinion what kind of goals are realistic for an older practitioner of 10th Planet JJ who wants to develop some game and not necessarily concede that the best days physically were behind me? Thanks man!!

Rob, I'm right there with you man. I'm 32 turning 33 in a few months. My official 10P training started June of 2011 when the 10P Miami Hotbox formed so I'm just a few months into training myself. Here's our 1st class

Just make sure to train smart. Warm up WELL before you stretch. Eat clean. Sleep 5-8 hours a day regularly. And if/when you get even the smallest injury, don't neglect it. Recovery times increase proportionately with age. Oh yeah, and tap early, tap often. You could be the "later age" inspirational story of the guy who started jitz at the age of 40 and gets his black belt at 50. You could be the George Foreman/Randy Couture story of 10th Planet and succeed regardless of your age. Oh yeah and most of all.....ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

my instructor started at 40, got his black belt and had a decent MMA career. you can do anything you want.

I'm 48 next month and feel like I'm just getting started

I'm in my mid 40's and started in my 40s

I'm 24 or something like that maybe i'm 20 though i've just been going by what my mother says. could be a bad idea. i feel like im 38 and a half sometimes. im not an athlete but im a great eater of suppers and dinners. have you ever thought about what turkey taste like on a non holiday. it is wonderful. you don't have to save that greatness for your algebra exam. it can be expressed right here at home anytime. thanks guys you do a lot of work and i appreciate it.

Hey guys, I am 40 also and I am feeling like I am just hitting my straps. Good habits go a long way. Train hard , train smart, eat well, vitamins for recovery, meditation is great for that too ( recovery) and rest well too. Glucosamine/condroitin, fish oil, vitamin C, plenty of water, use coconut water no added sugar fro post training drink for rehydration and you are on your way.

Yoga is also great for recovery and keeps you stretching and working your core. Many back issues from guard play all have a bearing on health so keep your spine perfect with regular Chiropractic visits (i have been for 4 years straight each week which saved my career) with a reputable practitioner who understands jiu jitsu and MMA.

always warm up well and stay within your weight class as much as you can to avoid shitty injuries which are unnecessary. If you live drill, be careful which ones you do as they can be risky on your health so keep it in mind. I live drill all the time with my students and try to stay within those boundaries. Lucky for me, my top guys are not too heavy.

Just a quick survey - Would anyone be interested in a group on facebook or continuing blog/forum here on the 10p homesite dedicated to keeping us older guys staying in and flourishing in the JJ game?

I feel as older athletes we bring a lot of other stuff to the table that can really benefit us in our 10th planet JJ journey.

Being almost as old as you, I think it is just getting your rhythm and not trying to take on too much. As Frank said, I really make sure I warm up my neck and various body parts I am more prone to injure, and I don't try to force in that 'one last roll' at the end of a long class.

Yeah....beware...the "one last roll" thing - brilliant Scott - that's always when it seemed to happen to me in the past.

Total disrelated topic- I got to get me all those fancy thingamajiggy's you got at the bottom of your post.

Yea I think a Facebook for old bastards is a great idea. As long as it is connected to this main site I think its a good thing as I have many things that I do to assist me in getting thru training at this age.

mauimartialarts.com/instructors he's the head instructor. He still rolls and teaches every day at 55 and believe me, he doesn't feel like a 55 year old at all. He's in better shape than me.

hi there, i am a full time instructor teaching everyday . my body is not what it used to be i am still fit but have a very bad back i work my core to keep it as good as it can be but i have had to cut back on the amount of hard training thinking i am still in my 20's ! thuis is so hard to do because you still think you should do everything that everone else does i dirink lots of water and try to keep my body out of danger !! somepeople just want to hurt you when they train if you pick your partners that will push you and respect you you will bwe able to train for a long time!!
