Is anybody familiar with the martial art of Dum-foo?
So I live in a small, rural town. There isn't much to offer in terms of martial arts training. Recently I was downtown checking out a TKD dojo. When I came out of the gym after my first trial lesson I noticed some black dude standing outside smoking a cigarette. We made eye contact and he asked me "Hey man, you interested in martial arts?" I have no idea how he knew this about me. Which led me to believe he was a mystic warrior initially. "Yeah dude. It's hard to find a decent place to train around here," I replied. "Yeah, I hear dat. Yo, you seen da karate kid bro?" He asked.
"Yeah man. Of course. It's a classic," I said.
"That's great, mon. I'm a master of dum-foo. I see potential in you. In da way you carry yourself. I want to train you, mon. If you listen to everything I say, you will become a master in dum-foo. You interested?" He asked.
"Yeah man! For sure," I said. I was a little leery though about the price. "How much you charge?"
"Usually a hundred a month. But I see potential in you, boy. Free of charge. Come by my place tomorrow." He said as he told me his address.
Well the next day arrives and I go by his place. He lives in a dirty ass apartment. It didn't seem like a martial arts masters place. "Alright, first thing I want you to do, is ta give my place a good sweep."
"Alright," I said. "Cool." I take the broom from him and sweep his place for about an hour. "What next?" I asked.
"Now you gonna do my dishes, mon." He had a shitload of dirty dishes, with dried crusted on food from at least months ago. It took me about two hours.
"What now?" I asked.
"Come back tomorrow," he said.
So I go back the next day and he said "Today, you gotta take my dogs for a walk." He's got two big rotties, and they were quite the handful to walk. I started to get a little mad. This isn't what I had in mind for martial arts training. When I got back to his place I told him: "This isn't really martial arts man."
"You've seen the karate kid, right? It's about discipline, mon. You are learning more dan you tink," he told me. I guess he had a point there. "Come back tomorrow."
It's been two months and now I'm cooking this dude and his gf dinner every night. I'm cleaning up all of his messes. I've painted his entire apartment. Walked his dogs every day. Answered his phone. I don't know much about dum-foo, but I'm told it had unconventional training methods. Is anybody familiar with this martial art?
