10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu

I want to say for the record that I am an unapologetic Gracie jiu-Jitsu Gi practitioner. I love the gi and will never abandon it. I know that many of you hate the very mention of the words “10th Planet” and the name “Eddie Bravo.” My personal goal in Jiu-Jitsu is to get better technique and I will study Judo, Wrestling, Sambo and yes, even the dreaded 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu in order to do it. I am unapologetic of this as well.

When I think of Eddie Bravo I think of a quote from Fredrick Nietzche, “Every Profound Spirit Needs a Mask.” Eddie Bravo’s mask is that of the Rock and Roll Messiah that has come to free us from the confines of the gi. I personally think of him as someone who has helped me to explore my gi game better.

Eddie Bravo hasn’t done himself any favors by alienating the gi practitioners in our sport but if you get past the rhetoric and the moves that require great flexibility you can find a lot of gems that will make your game better, especially since it appears to me that gi pants make a very positive impact on getting friction for many moves. Perfect for gi Jiu-Jitsu!

I am not a big fan of Eddie Bravo as a “Jiu-Jitsu Messiah.” but I am a fan of him as a very solid Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and innovator. If you ignore 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu then you are doing a disservice to yourself. So just grab one of his books and a flashlight, go hide in your closet and read it. You don’t even have to tell anyone.

I think it's a great compliment in itself being mentioned by Pedro Sauer, who is a solid Jiu Jitsu practitioner in itself. He's basically telling people you gotta buy your books and look into 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. And to all the doubters who think 10th Planet is only Rubber Guard and Twister, that statement is just great. I know you didn't post this article because of your ego, but isn't it nice to read those words?

I'm proud of my sensei and ever will be regardless what others say. :)

Damn!!! That's awesome. We need more Gi practitioners to come out and say they appreciate the System, because there definitely is value in it Gi or NoGi.
I respect Prof.Sauer limitlessly and this expanded that.
When people realize it's potential you're gonna see some INSANE sweeps from some of the 10thpjj positions with the gi.
Eddie Bravo made 10th planet to help Jiu Jitsu not segregate it, and it's sad that some people think you have to choose or pick sides and thus hate the other.
Close mindedness in any form is a hindrance to the body, mind and performance in this all-too-beautiful sport.

Isn't Keith Owen also a firearms instructor?

I can't help but notice that not many of the BJJ guys mention that 10th planet system was designed for MMA. BJJ 4 MMA

keith owens the man! he's got some many little gems of knowledge, that help my game endlessly.

i had no idea that GI jiu jitsu guys could take the GI off and do nogi jiu jitsu, i thought that was illegal

great post. Smart man. The best equipped man is the man with the most tools. Give it time and we'll see more and more guys using 10th planet moves (without giving credit).

I have always enjoyed Keith's videos and opinions, and I have been watching for years. I bought his DVDs online, when I usually just find videos for free, because I love his attitude and he deserves to make a few bucks. By the way, much as he describes TPJJ, his videos are not revolutionary, but there are some real gems. But my main point is that Keith brings optimism, a positive attitude, and a very open mind to every session, and he supports the idea of a fighter tailoring techniques to his game, rather than vice versa. Thanks Keith!

Kieth Owen is the man. But don't label him as just a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. He has more then one black belt and a wealth of knowledge. He's a very well rounded martial artist, teacher, and person in general. I bought his DVD's also. Actually gave them to a few friends in the Marine Corps to study. He's help their ass out of tight spots and doesn't even know it. Nothing but great things to say about him and he continues to impress me on a constant basis.

Keith is a helluva guy! He even tried to talk to my instructor (also a Pedro Sauer BB) who alienated me from my school. Although his words fell upon deaf ears, it showed he was a solid guy in the attempt. He not only stuck up for me, but for 10th Planet as well ;)

I can safely say that I am a BJJ gi practitioner and I absolutely love TPJJ stuff.
The other day I got this guy that was 20 kilo's (44 pounds) heavier then me and 5 years older (I'm 17) in an omoplata and finished him with it all thanks to just watching some rubberguard video's.
So I can't imagine the potential if you actually learn the techniques properly.
