Velasquez vs JDS on Fox Thoughts

Don't get me wrong, I am pumped for this fight. However, a lot is riding on this deal. Personally, I think UFC made a mistake letting go of the spike deal for fox. I know Fox probably made them get rid of spike but let's be real. Spike tv gave us 4 free guaranteed fights (most of the time 5 or 6) and supposedly the fox card will only give us one. In a perfect world, UFC would be on fox, spike and versus but thanks to big business this can't happen. Nevertheless, I digress.

Velasquez/JDS MIGHT be a great fight, but as we've seen in the past with two evenly matched fighters this could turn into a real snoozer. The only way Cain can win is to turn this into a boring fight. He's not going to stand and bang with JDS, and he's not going to submit him or pound him out. He's going to press his up against the cage and take him down and lay on him without taking too much risk. This very well could be the fight that destroys the ufc. If this fight is boring and the ratings suck, the UFC/FOX deal will be terminated and Spike will probably say "Fuck you, we're with Bellator now," leaving the UFC on PPV only (back to the beginning).

What would I do? I'd keep the JDS/Velasquez fight on the PPV card a week prior and put on two exciting non-title fights with big stars that always come to fight. Tito/Franklin and Lesnar/Overeem; both three round affairs. That's right.

I don't get how dana thought that his fox debut should be 1 fight for an hour.(officially it's cuz the paq vs marquez fight is on around the same time slot) it may have been a fox idea/move but dana agreed, 1 fight 1hour that will make or break this situation. it just seems weird, i see a lot of people like I can't wait...but like i said no undercard just cain vs jds, so 45 min of padding and hype vids we've already seen is what i assume will be enjoying. idk

1) There are supposed to be more fights/year on Fox than we saw on Spike.
2) Fox is FAR bigger and FAR better at handling sports, thus ushering in a true legitimacy of MMA as a mainstream sport.
3) Tito/Franklin isn't very exciting (to ME) & Lesnar/Overeem would not go 3 rounds. Instead, I'd opt for Bendo/Guida and Mir/Overeem.
5) No one should be complaining about seeing a title fight for FREE.
6) WAR JDS!!!

A single hour doesn't make it worth my time if I have other things I can be out doing. A big ppv or fight night on spike that is 3+ hours is a different story.

The fact that I can't properly count to 6 is reason enough to disregard my argument...

Also, I have a feeling that William is right but, again, its a Heavyweight title fight for free.

I know I probably seem like a party pooper here. Obviously the UFC on FOX is huge for our great sport. However, the Velasquez/JDS fight was a poor choice IMO.

I think Velasquez is one of the most exciting fighters in the game. Awesome choice, in my opinion.

i think they are only having one fight because they wanted to get a card together on short notice so they could expose it to the FOX audience as quickly as possible.

ah. i didn't really think about that as a factor. makes even more sense.

The idea behind putting only one fight on the show seems a little flawed to me, but I'm sure there is some sort of strategy behind it. Now, knowing that we only have one fight to show a largely uneducated audience what MMA has to offer, I think JDS vs Valasquez is a perfect fight to showcase this sport.

Two of the most well rounded, well conditioned, and heavy handed fighters in the game today are going to face off for the heavyweight title. While some might see Valasquez's wrestling as potential for a boring fight, I think it is much more likely to lead to an exciting fight that showcases mixed martial arts. People love stand up wars, but again, a large percentage of people will be seeing MMA for the first time, and we need a fight that differentiates MMA from other combat sports such as boxing.

Neither guy is known as a boring fighter, and I cant think of any of either of their fights that werent enjoyable. Cain vs Junior should be a badass showdown of some of the UFC's best boxing, wrestling, or jiu jitsu...maybe even all three! Saying this fight could destroy the UFC is a silly stretch to make. Worst case scenario it is a boring fight, in which case the first full two hour show should be on par with the quality of fights we have come to expect.

I just hope this "one fight" thing doesn't effect other fighters opportunities to pick up their paychecks. And hopefully the fact that these fights are on a more "mainstream" channel I hope they don't end up doing the same idiotic thing that eliteXC did and pay fighters extra under the table to keep it standing.

Hopefully Dana's got more brains than that and will know it will piss off the hardcore fans in a bad way. Seriously, if I found out Dana did anything like that I would stop watching UFC completely.

and my stoner ass remembers it's a title fight so only 30 mins of hype and filler. so not so bad but it would be nice to know what danas doing with the rest of the san jose card.
