The importance of the Fishnet!!!

Ok I was rolling tonight with a VERY legit purple belt and by the grace of God I landed in Twister Side-control.. It was a battle at first... I had to settle him down cuz he was trying to buck me off & shrimp away.. I got the Fishnet in and started to lace up the legs.. After I had successfully laced the legs I took the fishnet out in attempt to reach for the foot & roll... HUGE MISTAKE!!! When I let go of the fishnet it gave him just enough space to grab an underhook, shrimp away, & stick in a butterfly hook... I have always underestimated the power of the fishnet until it cost me that truck tonight... I feel very confident that if I would have got the truck, I would have tapped him because after our roll I explained to him what it was that I was trying to do & he said that he had no idea what to do from there... Man, if I would have tapped a purple belt, I would have been looking like Eddie after beating Royler & Renato could make fun of me too... I can tell you this, I will always look for the fishnet before I go for anything else cuz it truly is the ideal position of control... I can't believe I missed such an opportunity as that... FUCK!!!

The fish net is pretty much all I use to get to the truck from TSC now, on rare occasion I'll grab the foot. The fishnet just offers so much more control its a waste not to use it.

let's back up a sec. There is a forum called "The Underground" or mma.tv. If you don't pay for the pro account, you can only see the last 150 forum threads, ranked by the last time someone posted something to that thread (and they only show the top 50 threads on the first page. So if you really liked a particular thread, you would just write "ttt" which would immediately vault that thread "to the top" of the first page. This would get more people to comment on the thread, thus keeping it there.

The Fishnet is gold! Especially against traditional BJJ practitioners!

Josh I have a question for you. Your a pretty big dude and in the videos I see of you you seem to play around with the guard and half guard etc etc. Do you not excel in your top game? I know if I had all that extra strength that you have or someone big like Herzog or some of the guys around here I would never pull guard or half guard. One of my instructors I used to train with was a big guy and he really uses the extra strength perfectly complimenting his technique and explosive speed. I pull guard most of the time because I suck at passing the guard (I need to train this) and my guard is decent. These days rolling with higher belts I seem to only get half guard which is a bitch cuz I can get a sweep around 40 percent of the time, 20 percent I get darced, 20 percent i get to full guard, and 20 percent i get my half guard passed so its really a struggle. Hell with it all I guess.

Hey, Josh

Don't fear the purple belt. He's just a guy. Yes he has more experience and more skill, but it's not unusual for a white belt to be able to tap a purple belt. Sometimes white belts have a built in fear of higher belts and it causes them to play too conservative. Just go for it. Once you tap a purple belt, you'll find that you are tapping others ones (not as often as they are tapping you, of course).

Oh, and please don't put two guns up when you do tap one. That would be kinda disrespectful.

He usually starts by pulling guard or half guard but usually gets a sweep and end up on top. At least with me he does. And when he gets on top, it's hell trying to get out from under him. He usually ends up on my chest or across my diaphragm and I end up using more energy to breathe than anything else.

Agreed. Purple Belts are endowed with limbs, hips, a neck, and a spine...and they hurt and break just like yours. Cast off the illusion that color makes the difference and be perfect.

Ya know man I play alot on bottom because that's where I am weakest... I like to work my escapes and defense alot cuz it prolongs me getting tapped against quality grapplers... My top game is pretty good due to the fact that I weigh 220lbs and I know how to distribute my weight evenly... But my ultimate goal is to be comfortable in any position so I work defense alot...
