Trouble shooting Pulling Quarter Guard to Lockdown.

How come when Quarter backs audible they yell out Zebra blah blah blah 32+3x squared = a bowl of fuck? I can't believe i threw a pick in that 4th grade game vs BJ sports. (bj doesn't mean blow job in this example)

Anyhow I was watching Eddie roll at seminar and we all know he loves to just pull a foot and go to lockdown. His lockdown is god like. I want to know a few things. I'm a simple minded person. I just want to pull lockdown every time and work the same shit on every one. I don't feel like breaking the jiu jitsu game down to adapt and play open like to every situation. i just want to do the same shit over and over. preferably (did i spell that right on the first try son? yes i did hell yeah!) just pull a foot and go to lockdown.

Heres the problem how do you counter the knee slice pass when you pull the quarter guard. say a guy is posted on his knee and you pull the quarter guard triangling your legs and trying to mini stop but since you only have his ankle he just slices through. i can try to push his knee back all i want dont work though. his knee slice pass is so superior to my arms trying to save my position its like if the Baltimore Ravens played the Mississippi Farmers technology center of Space and Land mines.

anyone good at this simple game plan of quarter guard to lockdown?

I run into the exact same problem Don, I always end up futilely trying to push their knee back with my arms, like the jaws of life but to their knee, sometimes it works but if we're sweaty forget about it. I'd also love to hear a technical solution to this problem. :-)

I know you may just want to use lockdown but you should really switch to deep half guard when a guy is trying to cross knee pass you. You're pretty much guaranteed to take the guys back or sweep him. And it's easy as hell to learn.

Address the knee as soon as possible before it gets to the ground. Place your hand on it and your elbow against the ground, while staying inside his underhook. Then he cant drive his knee all the way through giving you a window to ministomp or transition.

I can't hang out long in 1/4. Got say screw it and go to work.

Lately I've been trying to work getting the underhook then getting up to dog fight.

Bobby Rivers has the solution!!! Just palm his knee with your hand closest to the ground. Use the elbow as the base.

I love everything you just said! About chess, I used to play a lot and surprising can still hold my own in that game. Logic and puzzles... How chess relates to jiu jitsu is insane.

But yes, simple jits.. Every move has a counter, just as in chess. Addressing sub attempts before checked avoids checkmate. Only way to recognize the checks, is with mat experience. There's no secret to it.

i agree . i wish the physical part wasnt such a big deal. im sure its not at your level and others. but at my level i feel so weak sometimes. technique is crazy. comes with time i guess.

I use 1/4 Guard to DogFight all the time when I'm having issues with my minstomp to lockdown.

The Nog arm roll is another killer tool from 1/4 guard, traditional 1/2 guard, lockdown and even butterfly guard.

Its a great option as well when the knee is on the ground in 1/4 guard, and you missed your opportunity to block the knee as Bobby mentioned.

Its just the way you establish the under hook, trapping their overhook like its done in the mechanic.

This is about as close as I could find. Trapping the arm is the most important piece to get from it.

Yeah, its like using it as an attack instead of a counter. Def worth reps.

Agreed. I like watching similar attacks because you can see the core mechanics and how you compensate with control in an ad hoc scenario. So like in this example, if you go for the mechanic but the dude slips the lockdown, forcing you to recapture him in quarter guard or standard half, then you just have to deep hook his leg with your other arm to directly manipulate his hips. Great stuff.

This is generally the only pass that defeats my half guard attempts. They always get the tight underhook as well and smash my face with their shoulder. If they don't get the under hook it's much easier to fight that pass by pushing their knee upwards (and you can even go to deep half at that point)

There reason I dig that arm roll set up is becasue its the same way I used to set up the seat belt grip in Judo & Sambo, and it just came natural to use it on the mat as well.
