I think the bigger problem is usually people who don't wash their training gear/clothes after each practice like they should cause THAT stuff breeds bacteria and smells like shit. I find that to be more common than people themselves actually stinking. I mean I just assume that everyone I roll with is smart enough to shower regularly, preferably right before training like I do.

There used to be a guy that would roll in our class who smelled of peanut butter. I nicknamed him "peanut butter sweats" and eventually it go so bad I had to say something. He opted out of rolling with us instead of showering, that stinky fuck!

On the subject oral hygiene, it doesn't hurt to floss and use mouth wash before class. Some peoples breath can be rank as fuck. I used to train with this fella that had a bunch of rotten teeth, it smelled so bad I would shudder every time I caught a whiff. You could smell him just by talking to him a couple feet away.
so your saying the guy pisses himself on purpose when you say spritz, i had to look that up on urban dictionary cause i didn't even hear of that before.
Also sucks when people leave their laundry in the washing machine too long and bacteria builds quickly then smells even worse once sweat hits it.

Here a related practical question. When cleaning my gis, I have tried oxyclean in the wash, febreeze 2x strength after, and even occasionally adding a little bleach, but there is always some remnant smell. It's not terrible, but as I sweat in training, it just comes out much faster, because it's already there to start. Is there a special detergent or spray or something that you guys use? Am I missing something? I clean my shit, but I don't want to be the smelly guy on the mats. Thanks in advance.

I've had the displeasure of having to call out some people after practice...
I would walk out with them to see what they did with their gi.
I would than notice that they would bunch-up the stinky gi, and just throw it in the trunk.
I couldn't believe it, so I would ask if that was how they normally handle their uniform.
And, they would come up with some lame reasoning about how its too hard to keep up with the washing,
or how they'd just forget to take it out of their car.
That's when i would let them know, "Hey bro, don't ask me to roll with you anymore.
Your stink sticks to my gi, and nobody else wants to roll with me after that."
Can you believe it, I had people thinking their stink was mine. haha
I, also, encountered people with damp gis, they said they had not had enough time to air dry it.
I would let them know that one gi is not enough, regular practitioners need a couple, at least,
to cycle them through their workouts.

If you are not clean at my practice, don't even get on the mat. Bathing is implied with the clothing rule. So far, no issues. Team rules 8&9:
8) Keep toe nails and finger trails closely trimmed. Long finger/toe nails can slice you opponent open, quickly, and take an extremely long time to heal.
9) Ensure clothing is clean each practice.

Damn the horror stories. I swear I've been spoiled in my last two schools. Even in Empire, some of my team mates would come straight from doing muay thai and despite being sweaty as hell, they would have the courtesy to put on a fresh shirt/rashie. And my current spot has showers in the facility and no one I rolled with smelled any worse than what you'd expect from a sweaty man.
But for what it's worth, inform your partners about the virtues of hand washing your gear. Hand washing and hang drying extends the life of your gear. Sarkis told me about that when he noticed the fuzzies growing on the knees of my tights. Also, your gear always smells laundry fresh. I usually just threw my gear in the shower with myself to let it soak, after I showered, toss in a bit of detergent, hand wash, rinse, and voiala, they're washed.
Also, having at least one set of gear for each day you train is helpful. So say one day you're lazy and don't feel like washing your gear....you have back ups. Get more than one jockstrap too. Also, budovideos.com has a cool promo called mystery shorts. You pay $25 and they give you a random pair of shorts. Shorts that would normally go for $50 and up.
And defense soap is the ish. Ring worm free since I started using it.
Vinegar is legit. The guys at my gym told me to try it and it took the funk out of my rashguards. My problem is having everyone sweating on me so my stuff would smell like everyone I rolled with at the gym that night. I used a cup of Apple cider vinegar, let the stuff soak then did a normal wash and they were fresh smelling once again!Quote:

That mystery shorts deal is great tip for those of us that train alot and are broke, the two seem to go together.
The best stuff is that "Pink Stink" stuff that people buy for their hockey gear or sports equipment. Soak anything overnight in that and then wash it, and it's like new.
You can usually buy it from minor hockey league parents because they sell it as a fund raiser.
Arm & hammer laundry detergent. The powder kind plus OxyCleqn. It comes in an orange box. That stuff is the ish. You could just add baking soda to your clothes too I suppose..but that's what I use. It's mother in law approved! ;-)
