I just watched it. He transitioned from the omoplata to arm bar to the back and then got the RNC. That was one of the coolest transitions I've seen in a while. :)

video?
Yeah, I saw it. He basically rewound a rolling armbar transition(back, to arm bar, to omoplata), it was pretty insane.
Have you had a chance to try it in the gym yet? I mean I get it but I don't get how he was retaining full control regressing through the transition. Taking an arm bar out of failed back control is one thing but how do you set up back control from a failed arm bar?
What was the position of the failed armbar? If he was stacked he could almost armdrag while removing the leg from in front of the face to the back.
I guess "failed" is a bad term since he wasn't attempting the arm bar and just using the position for control.
I guess the confusing part is making the transition from arm bar control to the back. I'd imagine that you'd be really high, almost too high to take the back... that's the weird part that I can't figure out. Is it just physical ability or did he pendulum his weight somehow?
I could see if Rader was pulling his arm out and not putting a lot of downward pressure the armdrag would work.
It was beautiful. Mendes ran through Rader, as if he was a white belt.
Radar had only two options, roll and attempt to defend the armbar or give up his back. It was more Radar giving up position to get out of the submission. Rafa didn't control what was going on, he was taking what he was being given. Controlling the chaos, not the move. Also, you're half way to the back if you're on a deep armbar.
Yes, that was awesome. I felt bad for Rader since he's been training so hard for it. All of that training and I think he got submitted faster than when they met up last time.
just watched it. wow. that was extremely slick.
Saw it the day it happened, I videotaped that transition on my phone so I could figure exactly what happened. It was a little like the drowning jiu but the swim failed so he jumped on the back. Super duper ultra smooth, I was blown away :)
Rafael starts in Kimura guard then swings his left leg off the hip and around the shoulder for an omaplata. Justin then stacks the omaplata so Rafael swings his right leg around Justin's hip to apply an armbar. Justin struggles a moment then lies belly down so Rafael swings his left leg over Justin's head and around the back. ****other details: Rafael switches from hooking Justin's left leg with his left arm when he was threatening the omaplata to hooking his left leg with his right arm like the swim move when he was attacking the armbar and the back. Awesome transitions! I never thought of attacking the omaplata from kimura guard like that. Badass!!
vidoe...please?
It's been awhile since I've seen it but the only trick I can think of is possibly loading the weight onto your shoulders like a granby roll, and then pendulum swinging your hooking leg to create momentum to swing you back onto the back. I could be way off on what he did though since I've only seen the clip a couple of times.
Rader actually used the very same technique against Wesley Gann this past weekend. He's been open about learning from and incorporating some of Mendes' moves. This is a cool match all around. he does the armbar transition to the back at 8m5s

Rader is a beast. Hadn't even lost a nogi match for a few years. Just goes to show how good mendes is. Its rediculous
I have almost no idea what Rafa is doing most of the time, he rolls on his shoulders, does some crazy leg work and ends up on the guys back. I re-watched that transition over and over to make sure I got it, it was beautiful.
Great match, def working the truck and flirting w/ a twister...he's a GD guillotine MACHINE!
