Jiu-flex: have you experienced it? Please share.

Ever since I've started jiu jitsu i've noticed super fast relexes. Jiu jitsu relex, or jiu-flex for short.

One of my experiences is almost getting broadsided by a big rig that was fish tailing. I quickly downshifted and zoomed to my left getting the heck out of harms way.

Another instance was a 2x4 leaning on a wall that fell as we were walking by. I quickly grabbed behind my friends back and caught the 2x4 before it hit us. He was like "I didn't even see that!"... I said, "nor did I"..

That's jiu-flex.. Come on people I know you have experienced soething along these lines! Let's hear it!

Jiu-flex thinking. Improv works well too. I don't know whether to say De La Riva guard or De La Hiva guard when Braulio Estima pronounces it De La Riva.

+1 ever since I saw the video where he said Joe Hogan.

To Ricks question - I like to practice that reflex by catching stuff that drops or I drop. Its always nice when someone is there to see you do it. I cant call it a Jiu-Flex though because I started as a striker first, if that makes sense.

Thanks Sean. Yup striking will give those types of reflexes. But I think wing chung reflexes is more in like to the face to face hand fighting while in butterfly or the defense to a submission... Waiting for that perfect opportunity to escape because they turned their hip just a tad.

Heck combine your striking reflexes with your jits reflex and watch how alert you become.

Re-dragging a re-drag of your own arm-drag attempt over and over again until you roll of the mat. I see theres all kinds of Jiu-flexes to power-up.

I find that when friends push me, or jokingly try to kick my feet out, I automatically shift my hips as if I were on top trying to stop a sweep. Often, without knowing what I'm doing, I end up shifting the momentum into them, dropping them to the floor.

Now, if I drop my wallet, and use a BJJ move to catch it before it falls, would that be Jew-flex? (I'm Jewish, this joke is ok, don't worry)

I have always had moments like that even before Jiu Jitsu, But I always called it my inner Ninja. Like if a glass falls off a counter and I reach out to catch it before it breaks or something along those lines.

awesome Harry! Good joke too. I had said de la hiva too until watching Braulio Estima's invisible jiu jitsu and he calls it de la riva. Braulio, being Brazilian, had me thrown off. Now what do you do. I guess in the end we gotta be consistent with one of the other... And so I am now switching back to de la hiva.

Yes, I believe I have experienced jiu-flex just a few weeks ago. I was at a BBQ and one of the guys was throwing a tennis ball for his German Shepard, after it was nice and soaking wet with dog saliva he threw it at my head, out of reaction I smacked the ball with the palm of my hand out of mid flight, directly back at the guy that threw it, (I did not even conciously see it if you know what I mean) everyone that saw it freaked out about how fast my reaction was. Needless to say no saliva ball was thrown at me again haha.

Dustin.. Exactly.. That's that jiu-flex! Just the other day a guy was in half guy(I didn't know it but he was about to attempt a rolling toe hold). He postured up to hand fight then barely turned his hip. I reacted so quickly that I started laughing... "ah ha! I know what your trying to do"... We both started cracking up because it was just a small, sudden twitch and my jiu-flex knew what the heck was about to happen.

Hahhaha! Karim.. Jiu-rape! I love it! But for real, that jiu-flex acts quick. cell phone drops and you catch that in mid-air. Pepper spray gets sprayed and you duck, or you smack that out of their hand.. Jiu-flex.. the phenomena..

Flying new york - jiu-do!

Skateboarding made me practically slip proof. When I slip on something my body instantly drops a level, distributes my weight evenly on both feet, and I ride out the slide. I did this once on a sloped driveway and ended up having to slide all the way down the driveway while standing, just naturally reacting to the slide so I wouldn't fall.

But yes, with jiu jitsu my sense of awareness is heightened. For example, I'm clumsy as hell but if someone throws something at me without warning I can catch it perfectly. If they tell me they are throwing it, I always drop it. The same thing goes for throwing accuracy.. but I only see the jiujitsu gains when it's automated responses.

A little note. After a while of catching dropped stuff you might drop a knife. Do not try to catch the knife. Your Jiu-Flex is gonna tingle cuz somethings dropping. Its a trap...

I'm tellin' ya Jay. Just say to someone, "it's that jiu flex." They'll be like, "what's jiu-flex?!".
Then you'll just have to say, "If only you 'knew'."

I do catch tumbling things( Glass, plastic, metal, odd /regular shape) mid air usually with the right side up fairly fast. Sometimes I feel like I could have reacted a couple milliseconds later and still have caught it before it hit the floor. No joke this happens like once every couple months. Also no body managed to beat me in that hand slapping game. I played drums for 11 years so I am not sure if I developed reflexes and coordination because of that or thru jiujitsu, but I do experience the Jiu-flex or some variant of it for sure.

I find myself catching things I drop all the time now. I was never a striker, must be jiu flex.

whenever i want to scout up on my bed, i shrimp... i got it bad. :(
