I saw UFC 1 live on PPV.
I had seen a few before but the one that got me hooked was UFC 62.
i bought a bunch of pride dvds and that was the first mma i saw. was just really interested in fighting and trying to get some jitz in my life. pride was so awesome really influenced a man. more so than ufc.
i was 6 years old when my dad would rent the first ufcs on vhs and it was fucking awesome.
I also saw UFC 1 on PPV. I remember all of the guys at the dojo (I was training Kenpo Karate at the time) got together at a friend's house to watch it. It was insane. We were all rooting for Zane Frazier since he was a Kenpo guy, of course he got destroyed. One thing a lot of newer fans (I mean Zuffa-era, for lack of a better term) may not realize is that in the first few UFCs, other than biting or eye gouging, you were good to go. Very little protection for the fighters so of course this resulted in bloodbaths, crazy KOs, etc. It was brutal. I remember being really impressed with Gerard Gordeau when he infamously knocked a tooth out of Teila Tuli's mouth with a kick. All of us watching were blown away by it and couldn't believe Royce won. Back in those days jiu-jitsu didn't even exist anywhere near my neck of the woods (FL) so guys like Shamrock, Gracie etc. who displayed even a basic ground game, it was like something from outer space. We all got pissed when the stand-up fighters were get destroyed with RNC's, LOL. But, it was a real eye-opener seeing karate and kung-fu 'masters' get it totally handed to them by wrestlers and jiu-jitsu guys. It basically made me really question my system and start looking for alternatives outside of it.
watching some of those early ufcs are funny now. ufc 4 keith hackney vs joe sondo, keith punches him in the balls then rape chokes him until he taps.lol
I didnt actually start watching till 2002. My dad brought home a old UFC on VHS I believe it was UFC 2. Ive been hooked since. I couldnt believe some of the stuff i was seeing haha
I was 11 and my friend from down the street came over with a vhs hidden at the bottom of his bag. I was happy as shit, cuz it has to be a porn right? First, he made me realize that this was a top secret, illegal competition and we could both be in deep shit for watchin it. Then Pat Smith's elbows confirmed, at the time, what I thought was a load of shit. And of course, Royce. From then on I started rnc'n my big brother when he picked on me and completely changed my life. I didn't start training formally till 12 years later.
UFC 1...Live on PPV!!!
ufc 1
u fuckers were lucky to start at ufc one. i was till yelling out gay katas about farm animals at the time. so young.
UFC 40: Shamrock vs. Ortiz 1
UFC 1!! Because of my brothers trainer at the time who went by ZANE FRAZIER. Zane had a school in North Hollywood.
The first one I saw was UFC 6 (I think). It was the one where Tank Abbott knocks the big Samoan dude into a seizure. It was awesome. I didn't really get fully obsessed with it until BJ Penn vs Matt Hughes 1. Don't remember what event that was.
anyone remember how disapointing ufc 3 was. they marketed it as shamrock vs royce gracie and in the end gracie quit halfway through due to injury, then shamrock quit cuz gracie quit and some random replacement fighter ended up winning it.http://images.wikia.com/mixedmartial...3/38/UFC_3.jpg
UFC 3 was fun with Kimo smacking Royce around!!
Keith Hackney chopping down the Sumo guy. Shamrock got hurt so he couldn't continue...UFC 3 was very exciting!
The fresh little Steve Jennum finshes Howard for the Tournament win....again that was a exciting fight!
Nah, I didn't think anyone would get killed. I had been doing Judo and JuJitsu at the time as was all ready fighting in Full Contact Jujitsu matches, so I was rooting for the Jiu Jitsu guy and thought becasue of the grappling advatage Royce would have a good shot at winning. I had read an article in a old MA magazine about a martial artist going to Brazil and training, I believe with the Machados and told the whole story about how he got his ass kicked, etc. So when they introduced Royce I figured he must have been associated with the Machados.
Got hooked on the first TUF. Been a fan ever since.
i talk about mine at my first few posts i had, but 2007 caught UFC UNLEASHED on spiketv
I had seen MMA but really had no interest until I started training Jiu Jitsu in the summer of 2009. Then slowly but surely things started making more sense.
I started watching UFC back in 94 via rental video. My grandmother had a cable scrambler box so I caught every UFC after that until the blackout. Those were dope times. I loved the style vs style days. I saw the evolution of MMA.
My favorite beat downs from those days were Don Frye vs Gary Goodridge and Marco Ruas vs Paul Varelens. I always loved seeing the smaller guy win with technique. Frye's dirty boxing was so dope to me. And watching Marco Ruas was amazing. I think he was the first "vale tudo" guy in the UFC. I just remember seeing this total package. His BJJ was on point. His muay Thai was on point. And watching him chop down Varleans with leg kicks for like 15 minutes was awesome. Or watching Taktarov get beat down for 30 minutes to choke out a gassed Tank Abbot. Or witnessing Vitor's speed for the first time in the UFC. Dude, so many memories. I could go on for maybe an hour straight.
Damn coach. OG like a MF'er. Props.
Ha dude, similar reason here. My uncle was a HS wrestler and would always try moves on me and bully me. After picking up a few things from Royce, it evened things out and I started tapping him out. Then it was ME asking him to try moves out. Eventually he didn't like playing anymore. I wish I knew about schools back then. I didn't start officially training until a month or so ago. Now my body's so damn out of shape. I regret it. But I would regret it more if I never started at all.
I had just started training in 2002 and found some King of the Cage dvds at a comic book store. I loved listening to the commentary on how the jiu jitsu guys we moving to set up submissions. Don 'The Dragon' Wilson and this guy named Eddie Bravo..... I wonder what happened to him?? :-)
My Old man ordered UFC 3 and thought it would be good for my to watch to see wrestling in a different light. He was taken back when I told him I was going to fight before I opened the gym. I told him it was his fault and he said, yeah it probably was.
It was a grimy UFC 1 VHS tape at my local mexican video rental store. The video was side by side with Faces of Death and the soft porn section. I've been in love ever since.
I don't know why it took me so long to train in the shit.
