Was it the knee bar that got him or the heel hook? It appears to be the knee bar.
Knee bar finished Avellan
Knee bar. There's an interview floating around somewhere. He said the heel hook effed him up. But then on the restart paul harris switched to a knee bar in a split second and cranked full blast.
Once they reset him in full heel hook position, he should've just withdrawn and taken the L. Paul Harris is a brute man. It ain't worth risking that kind of injury.
Rolling away from an ankle lock, puts you into a heel hook, rolling out of the heel hook puts you into a knee bar.....
note to self, rolling out isn't an ideal defense.
Well it was the title of the video that confused me.. it insinuates that it was the heel hook that fucked him but it was obviously the knee bar.
This is the second time I am seeing this and still, one of the stupidest ideas ever.
Part of me does. Part of me says, dude, you're an idiot. The other part says, dammit Paul Harris stop crankin leg locks like you're trying to ruin careers!
But in the end Avelan was the dumber one. Imagine being reset in full locked in guillotine against Marcelo? Cmon son.
If i were Avellan, I'd have taken the L via frantic, loud submission as soon as Palhares had the leg isolated the first time, out of bounds or not. Nothing good comes from resisting heel hooks.
Palhares tried to let it be the first time, and I really can't fault him on this. As soon as the ref restarted it, both guys tried to blitz. Palhares just happed to lock it in faster than Avellan escaped.
We had a seminar from Palhares recently here and he came to class twice. IMO he was a really calm relaxed dude with a good sense of humor.
I think heel hooks go wrong when both competitors are to competitive. You can't wait and see how long you can lat before tapping with something like a heel-hook because there is so little space between making your opponent tap and fucking up his leg.
