I've been closing the inverted triangle more and more recently, but I find it hard to finish the choke. I've found that the "stomp and curl" approach usually just pushes the guy away from me, even if I'm controlling the tricep.
Does anyone have advice to offer on sealing the deal with this beautiful submission?
This is my favorite sub from bottom while in side control. What I try to do is trap an arm between my legs first, hold onto the wrist, and then lock in the triangle. Once my legs are nice and snug I'll pull the arm towards me while I squeeze. If they start to slip their jaw out I'll douchebag it a little by driving what we call a Leopard Fist into the side of their neck with my free hand. The Leopard Fist is just like your standard punch-ready fist except you open all the fingers by one knuckle. It makes it a LOT more narrow and easy to sneak in there.
You can also threaten kimuras and toe holds without letting go, and (if you dont consider it 'bad form') some wrist locks are there for the taking.
Those work for me, but I'm self trained, so don't take my word as law. I've pulled those off on several blues, so they're not just noob killers.

One question though, Do you have to really squeeze your legs 100% to finish the submission because with a normal triangle I tend to do 60-70% pressure to preserve my partner.
I'm assuming that by "stomp and curl" you are making reference to Ryan Hall's triangle set. He has an excellent section in that set regarding the inverted triangle that you definitely need to see. The Braulio Estima video above has a very similar finish as well.Quote:

If i remember right, the one shown in MTS ends with as s-grip around the temple and pulled into your ass. Neck crank, maby helps with choke?
Ryan Hall's inverted triangle, which is one of the three triangle positions he discusses in his dvd (and the only other one used for finishing besides the regular triangle position), is not the same position as the inverted triangle Braulio demonstrates above and used to win the 09 ADCC Absolute Final.
my mistake. i thought the braulio video above was a clip from his recent appearance on "Rolled Up." he does show the inverted triangle finish on Rolled Up 29.Quote:

If you target the arm, clasping the hands together won't matter. There's no way he can stop you from digging in with an arm and breaking his grip. You have your whole lower body attached to his neck, so you can move him closer or farther from your torso, and your whole upper body on the arm, hunting for some form of a kimura or americana grip. Just keep moving around, and your hands will find places to go to break the grip eventually. Don't forget that you can sub the arm either way or straight with that grip. Just separate the arm, and then take what he gives you.
