Worlds Championships 2011: Takeaways [Add yours here]

In no particular order, although I may try to order this later as I figure out the hierarchy of importance.

1) 10th Planet showed up in force!! It was awesome to see this. What strength we provided in numbers, the other schools countered with years of tournament experience. It's all part of evolving so it's expected.

2) ibjjf rules don't allow heel hooks and knee reaping. Be sure to train with that in mind

3) the schools that are winning have competition teams. They train with guys that know the rules like the back of their hand, in order to simulate a certain tournament

4) NoGi Worlds or any ibjjf no gi event is composed of mostly gi competitors without the gi. As such, they will play pretty much like they would in a gi tourney. If they are up by points, they have no reason to advance, and are perfectly happy winning by a couple points or advantages.

5) Need to learn what advantages are. In a 0-0 match, the person with the most advantages, wins.

6) Need to learn to compete more aggressively. Need to simulate 2 minutes left on the clock, you have your opponent in your lockdown, you can't seem to whip him up or sweep, and you are losing by points. How to win from here.

A good drill to do maybe, is when you guys are grappling and you hear a bell, or someone says "Get out", then you stop what technique your doing, and try to get off your back at all costs(without getting subbed), and pass your opponents guard.

7) Open guard passing and sweeps is key

8) Inverted guard is good to use, but be careful that you don't get foot locked in the transition. And don't forget to watch Pablo Popovich's defense to this sweep.

Every thing you said is correct.

The advantage rules need to be mastered, too many tiny things that could cause you to lose or win, this needs to be fixed.

The number 1 thing to address in my opinion is athleticism. The guys winning the golds at the Nogi Worlds are generally very athletic. This sport is getting big and like most major sports athleticism is just as important as technique.

At HQ we will focus more on wrestling. I will push my competitor students to the newly formed wrestling classes run by Wisconsin D 1 wrestler and tpjj purple belt Rob Rodrigues. My mistake was not taking wrestling serious enough for my hq students. Up until a few months ago we never had a consistent wrestling program at hq, that was a big mistake and I learned a lesson from it.

Now we move forward with extra emphasis on balance, core strength and overall wrestling.

One more reason to visit HQ :)

Glad to see that 10th planet is still evolving. That is one of the reasons that I will always support 10th planet even though I'm a catch wrestler. Catch wrestle on top and 10th planet on my back.

Thanks Eddie! Yeah I noticed the guys at 10th Riverside who take the wrestling classes are starting to be a handful. As soon as Mark Munoz starts up his wrestling teaching again I may drop into Reign. I'd do riverside but working in irvine at getting there at 5pm is never gonna happen. 91 traffic bites.

But yes, the wrestling is important. I was at CSW a few years back and one guy mentioned if you are on your back and trying to sub a guy and can't within 30 seconds, you're going to sweep strategy or get the f# off your back strategy. Not words to live by but definitely to be considered especially in a time/point based system. They said that was some of the essence of "catch."

I learned that people are all about Stalling!!!! Wrestlers looking for takedowns and stalling! I had over heard other teams coaching the fighters to rush or takedown because they new a lot of 10th planet guys were going to jump gaurd. I found out, that if they rush as your sitting they get the points. I had to learn that the hard way in the semi final for blue belt open. I went to sit and the guy grabbed my foot as I was sitting and he got the takedown points in the first 30 seconds. After that he stalled me out and wouldnt come into my gaurd and avoided it at all costs. I got 3 points advantages afterwords but he stalled me for the rest of the round and won on those initial takedown points. I was pretty upset because I felt way more technical. Before that I had another guy who kept stalling and looking for the rush/takedown. I still medaled twice, placed 2nd in my division and 3rd for open.

If there is something I learned is I need more answers for people who stall.

i don't mean to sound like a dick, but did you guys not know about this before entering the tournament?

did you read up on the ibjjf rules/points system in preparation for the tournament?

Not sounding like a dick at all Ian. I knew the rules, but didn't understand the advantage thing. It's one thing to know it but training under these rules in a tournament style team, this is new to me in a way. Hence the need for competition teams and training... Denny is very knowledgeable about sport jiu jitsu and points vs advantages. That comes from experience in tourneys or more specifically ibjjf sanctioned ones.

Every school should have at least one Ian Quinto.

I know this isn't rules knowledge and all I am about to say comes with time and dedication but for me 1. Know the system, I was in my first match and the guy swept me and just hugged my head trying to maintain top position. Jaws of life were beginning to work and once I got double unders I couldn't whip to my hip, Eddie could see this and yelled for me to go to 5-0 control and to whip down. I immediately began whipping lockdown the opposite direction and after a couple whips and a solid bridge the guy just rolled over. These aren't typical techniques that I use but I have drilled them and had a working knowledge of the movements. This brings me to my second point 2. Keep your ears open to your coaches. I could hear both Salami and Eddie and in all three of my matches this helped one way or another. Being able to hear them is so important, at first may be difficult with adrenaline but keeping cool throughout matches helps with stamina and thought process. Being frantic is not a very good way to play chess let alone physical chess.

Well worded Mike.... I agree with both. Plus seeing everyones matches has added more fuel to my fire to out to HQ and compete with the 10th planet nation! I hope to get it together for next year.
Also you guys may want to try some no-gi judo throws, Herzog has a couple on youtube already. The ones he has posted go right into a submisson or a postion. I'm sure if you guys wanted something more you need just ask.

Tournaments aren't the place for experiments so train how you will compete. I like to wear pants but I spent some time rolling in shorts to prepare. Unfortunately, I wasn't so wise in regards to cups. I only rolled one night without a cup before the tournament. I hate rolling without a cup. I hate it and I think it's dangerous. My testicles are important to me. But if I had spent some time getting used to it, the ball slap I received when I pulled my opponent into my half guard wouldn't have disturbed me as much. Or, maybe I shouldn't had planned on working a half-guard game given the exposure to a nut shot in those conditions.

I know another guy who tried using ankle guards for the first time during the Worlds. It threw him off his game.

At 6:18 he explains advantages.. Would like to see if anyone can find a NoGi explanation of this and in particular at what point during a submission attempt does one get the advantage point?
Also, are we supposed to nit-pick at every attempt to submit our opponent that we should get an advantage point? Ugh, what ever happened to just straight up submissions and points?
