hey guys, we were doing some groundwork today in judo and i tried to go mission control on a guy but it just didnt feel right when i went to lift up my leg, seems like the gi makes too much friction etc for me and gets in the way. any suggestions or should i just focus on whats working for me so far? thanks brochachos

Karim, I've had success with it. True there will be more friction but the more you work it the easier it'll become. You can pretty much do all the same stuff except we have the added benefit of those newfound handles of the gi game. I've only rolled like 15 times in the gi but I can assure you that once you get used to the mechanics it almost seems unfair that we get to grab clothing.

I too have tried to use the Rubber Guard system in the Gi. Alot of the time I use the friction and grip of my legs to gain a high guard, grabbing the collar - in a way a precursor to the no-Gi Invisable Collar, and then working from there. Alot of stuff works really well, I think It's good not to compartmentalise between Gi and No-Gi.
Everything still works but it can be difficult - the Zombie for example is much harder to pull off. I attend a gi school, eventually you get used to the differences.
yea, with the gi the rubberguard game expands, you can do lots of chokes with the collar from the meathook, invis collar and chilldog. Just experiment with it, get a feel for it.
Plus, the more friction the better dude.

also, if anyone has any good tips for escaping head and arm control on a big guy that would be greatly appreciated as it seems to be the only thing im having trouble with right now, theres this giant guy in my judo class and i always get paired with him despite the fact hes twice my size, i managed to slip out the back once before he had solid control and choked him out but he usually just pins me and holds me there :/ other than that im repping the 10th planet as much as i can lol

i train at a gi school now as well but trained 10th planet for a year. so i mix a lot of rubber guard with the gi stuff too now. when i first started i thought rubber guard was useless in a gi cuz of all the friction. but once i got used to it and realized i just needed to loosen up a little bit, things started clicking. for example, in new york, instead of grabbing my left ankle with my right hand ill just grab on the the back of his collar with my left hand. that way i got a free right arm and a free left leg and a ton of space needed to keep the friction away.
Like most things, it makes some parts better, and some worse. Things like the zombie and the pump are a little harder because of friction, and the lapel can get in the way of transitions. Then again, holding a position once you have it is easier because of that same friction, and the added lapel moves are awesome. I'm playing around with a move where you wrap the gi around the guy's upper body while he is in RG to get a choke or sweep, for example. The point, though, is that RG definitely works in the gi. Plus, opponents in gi are generally less used to dealing with it.
yea as he ^^ mentions you can take the bottom part of the gi and wrap it around (so i'de take the bottom right of his gi and if im a left legged RG play and wrap it around into my hand at mission control. This opens up lots of moves)
