Was there a Martial Art offered at your High School?

I'm curious how many high schools actually offer a martial art as a school sport. I know wrestling could be considered a martial art but I'm not including it for purposes of this question. I don't know of any high schools around here in south FL that offer jiu jitsu or muay thai, or even karate. Do any of the high schools you guys went to or know of offer them? I think maybe there was a karate "club" at my high school but I'm more interested in school sponsored/administrated martial arts. I guess liability could be a hurdle for most schools, but when done properly I don't consider jits or muay thai to be more dangerous than wrestling or football.

Mr. Chuck Norris started a program in Texas in the 90's. Not much help on the liability part.

I WISH they taught BJJ or Muay Thai in my HS when I was attending. The closest thing to a combat sport would be wrestling I guess.

I heard that in the UAE jitz is offered like wrestling here in america

I started a nogi jitz afterschool program in Oct. we train 3 times a week....& they are getting good! my next step is to get sponsors so they can do comps...we are in Lake Highlands H.S. in Dallas, TX... it has really made a postive change in the lives. The cool thing for me is most of them have wanted to do jitz, but they never had the money now they can and they are very happy to be a part of jitz lifestyle.

my principal was a karate black belt and he had a class at lunch time you could take. i always heard stories that you could fight him if you wanted to but i smoked pot and was melo so i didn't try.

They didnt have anything like that when i was in school which 06 was my senior year but they had an mma program a year ago as an elective class last year I think (buddy of mine is still in high school) but now all they do is judo cause one of the ROTC instructors is a Judo Black Belt. I was like thats bullshit why werent they doing that when i was in school!!! haha

we had japanese style jiu jitsu from a black belt that were we would wear the gi top with this black skirt looking thing. it was weird, looked more like akido

to this day im not even sure what it was, hopefully i see him at the school reunion next week so i can ask him. he was also super out of shape too, huge beer belly
