Is the gi making a come back at your 10th Planet school?

The other night I was getting ready to teach my class
when somebody said they were changing the schedule
around to accommodate the new gi-classes. One guy said he
had just bought a new gi for $130 and that was the
cheapest one. Another guy said, "Oh, gi training give
you that solid base~!" I could hardly believe my ears.
Had he not heard about Eddie Bravo and the gi vs no
gi controversy? It was like being in the Twilight Zone.
I felt like saying it's the grappling that makes gi-grapplers
good grapplers not the gi. But I couldn't bring myself
to burst their bubble. Would you tell a kid there is no Santa
Claus or Easter Bunny? They were also enthusiastically
eager and impassioned about training with the gi that I
didn't have the heart to tell them no, wait this is 10th
Planet the leading no-gi grappling school in the world. We
all know that gi grappling won't help your no-gi grappling. I had
trained for years with the gi and had had enough of it.
Had come to 10th Planet just so I wouldn't have to train with the gi.
But who knows maybe I'll show them a few gi jokes or chokes.
Maybe it's the novelty of training with the gi. Something different.
Certainly different at any 10th Planet school.

So do they have any gi classes at your 10th Planet school?
After all is said and done, Eddie Bravo is a gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
black belt.

If they believe that gi grappling training helps your no-gi grappling, maybe they'll also believe doing kung fu forms and karate katas also help their grappling. Case in point, this sweet "Spinning Monkey Arm Lock." Don't forget to kiyap/kiai/battle cry when applying the Spinning Monkey Arm Lock...or any submission for that matter, since we all know that doing so "focuses the chi flow."

I just wish I could only pay for 10th planet classes. doesn't feel right that I have to pay for japanese, brazilian and 10th planet when I only have interest in one style. I miss my old gym..lol

Training with the gi helps when u try to fight off FBI agents. I bet Neo wishes he woulda spent a lil more time in the gi. Woulda made being the one a lil easier :)

Finally hit this to work on my phone. Yes the gi is coming back definitely for the winter.

We recently stopped the Gi classes at the MMA gym i co-own and i can honestly say hand on heart, we have not had 1 single member ask when/if we are starting the gi classes back up again.
They will not be starting up again at my gym. :-)

I put on the gi several weeks ago once and let me tell you this: No-Gi makes your Gi better!

Its happening at our gym as well. I call it the G word. And I'm sick of hearing it so much lately.

Just the opposite here. Today was offically the last Gi class at our Academy, as a sign of the times and the direction that are gym is taking, no one showed lol.

So the GI vs NO GI question has been answered and proven in Brazil against
the best Jiu Jitsu grapplers in the world, NO GI training is better for NO GI competition.

RFT black belt Marcelo Brigadeiro answers some questions about Luta Livre.

I took a seminar years ago with Marco Ruas and Pedro Rizzo that UFC ref and state
wrestling champion Larry Landless put on in Montebello, Calif. Then I took a class with them
at BHJJ Club. Ginki Sudo was in the class. Marco Ruas does Luta Livre que no?
He's a killer with the leglocks. Marco Ruas was way ahead of the times way back
when. His art has wrestling, grappling, leglocks, muay thai and all with no-gi. At the
Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu club they had Marco Ruas, Pedro Rizzo, Mark Kerr, Bass Rutten
and Marcus Venicius, Oleg T. all under the same roof.

The only reason I can think of a 10th Planet school having a gi class is to have a bigger market in the business world, you do not only attract the no-gi grapplers but the gi-grapplers at the same time. Other than that I believe they are 2 different games. If you want to compete in the gi, train gi. If you want to compete in no-gi or mma train no-gi. Not rocket science to me:)

I'm going to have to agree with you on that one good sir. Some people genuinely love the gi. If I ran a school that had both gi AND 10P classes, I don't see a problem with that SO LONG as people know that gi training makes you better in gi comps and that nogi is what makes you better in nogi and mma. I'd feel irresponsible as a coach/trainer/owner if people were mislead to think otherwise.

I run a Hotbox which is all nogi, but all of us(-1) are members of a gym that requires 2 gi days a week. All non box members relish this day, because it is when the better guys can finally slow us down to isolate, trap, and bait. And there are some crafty bastards in there and no room for error once caught deep in someones game. You have to get out slow and methodically with proper form leverage and tech. I get compromised so much more often in a gi so I get alot of quality escape reps. Then when its nogi the same tech feels effortless. Like I was used to resistance that wasnt there. This is def were the gi has helped me. And I hate the gi.

For nogi its the offense and control. We are, generally, much tighter on every part of the setup and sub, cause the friction and grips just arent there. So when you get position in a gi, and you have all the grip anf friction you want plus your nogi instinct to squeeeeze. They aint gettin out.

Reluctantly, through my perspective, they actually do compliment each other. If I wasnt forced I wouldnt do it, but in reflection. I think it helped me.

Only bin doing gi bout 9 months.

agreed. i used to be at a gi school most of the time but did some 10th P tech on the side. It made my gi game way better. One thing I miss about the gi is that it isn't as nasty and it helps new guy no not spaz out as much, but that's about it. when i roll gi now i just never use the gi for chokes and then it's still good realistic training.

I train in the Gi 6 times a week. It's helped a ton for the reasons that bobby stated. I actually enjoy it.
