Jiu-Jitsu Truth

This week I announced to my students and the public that we are officially a no-gi Jiu-Jitsu school. As a Gracie Barra brown belt with my own school this is shaking things up a bit, but not as much as Eddie Bravo has shaken my belief in the gi. I realized that I wasn’t that good without the gi, and for the last few years I have been working at having good jiu-jitsu, not good gi jiu-jitsu. Through trial and error I have come to the resounding conclusion 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is the best Jiu-Jitsu on the market. I no longer train with the gi, and am working hard at making up for lost time. It is going to be a long road, but it is a road of jiu-jitsu truth.

Wow, Brave of you. I was talking to another 10p person the other day at HQ and we were both saying how we miss playing the GI game as a fun thing to do, not as a style of training. Maybe you had enough GI since you are a brown belt and I gave it up at Blue. I choose to train No Gi with Eddie because it is going to work always and Gi only works sometimes, but for the fun, both are good sports.

I'd be interested to know how the announcement affects your business in the next few months. I've always had a hunch that there are a growing number of people who would be willing to give jiu-jitsu a try if only they had a no-gi school near them. This is only a hunch, but I base it on the growing interest in MMA, and the decline of traditional martial arts schools. BJJ may not be a TMA per se, but the gi definitely makes it look like a TMA, and it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of potential grapplers are put off by the kimono.

In my opinion, if BJJ isn't a TMA, it's starting to become one. When you start getting closed mindedness, official uniforms, traditions, etc, it starts to become a TMA. Any MA that resists change and evolution may as well be a TMA. But yeah man, I think you might be right. It might be more inviting.

Best to ya sir and couldn't agree with you anymore. I broke away with the school I trained at for 8yrs. I got my bjj brown belt and we went to a friends new mma gym and rolled with a guy nogi from Cali and his game was pimp!thats all he ever trained was nogi but only like 5 yrs! That was it for me nogi from here on!!!!!!

A little update for anyone who cares. We lost a few students due to going to an all no-gi program, but we picked up a few new guys along the way. I think it will be better in the long run. In the mean time all my guys are super stoked. Thanks everybody.

The gi is the only real jiu jitsu. You guys just frolic on mats with half your clothes off.

Just saying if you train for real life situations you better train some time gi but for cage crap go half naked.

Brian, I've seen guys rip their shirts off with 3 feet of snow on the ground before they try to start shit. One of my students is from Alaska he has seen guys do that in the dead of winter. As far as your technique, the basis should be how to move another body. The gi becomes a tool, you should use that tool to reinforce your technique not be the basis of. No gi technique works with or without, gi technique only works with.

I completely agree with Eddie, instructors use the gi to dominate their students. That becomes it's application in the academy.
