reddit is just a pg-13 version of 4chan
Dam there is some guy on there named Erik Anderson talking some shit about rolling with Joe, Cade, and Shegiki (spelling?)
"Cade legit pissed me off because I was rolling with him (playing butterfly guard, not even going hard) and he threw up his hands and shouted "this guy is too big, I can't roll with him!" What a fucking asshole. Similar story with Shigeki."
"Joe is definitely solid for a 45 year old Brown belt. I last rolled with him right after Christmas 2010, so one year and one month ago.
I swept him, then he complained we were too close to the wall. So we reset in his guard. Then I passed his guard and he got a cramp in his back so we stopped for a minute and restarted in his guard. Then I passed his guard again and we were close to the wall so he restarted me in his guard. Then I passed his guard but we got a little close to some other guys who were rolling so he restarted me in his guard.
No joke. I didn't realize how unusual the restarts were until after we'd finished rolling.
(note to Joe: If you read this, I'm happy to come by and rematch you. I'm a fan of your comedy, UFC commentary and political commentary and like I admitted above, you are a solid brown belt)"
Ive been reading and this Garley Cavidson says hes gone to HQ multiple times and is friends with 90% of the people there but doesnt exactly sound like it by describing how certain people roll like Joe Rogan, Cade Nelson .not exactly talking bad but the very first thing he does is call eddies win a fluke (yea cliche by now). hasnt proved himself in comp and even brings up ari and brandon quick.
anyone from HQ know who this guy is or remember since hes supposedly friends with most people there
Who the heck is Erik Anderson? LOL.
How's Cade an asshole for saying this guy's too big for me? Maybe he's an asshole for trying to use his weight on a smaller guy instead of using his technique.
Does this Erik Anderson mention where he trains?
Disrespectful talking about a roll on a forum, seems as if he is trying to convince people that Joe was being a douche for always restarting in guard. True or not, if it was his opinion that it seemed strange after a roll then he should have spoken to Joe afterwards.
Really disrespectful again; to Rhasaan's rank and to Cade and Shigeki. He's obviously trying to cause trouble by publicy stating all this. As I said, if you have a problem with someone, you go directly to them to sort it out, not publicly rant about your idiotic opinions.Quote:
Rhassan is a decent purple belt.
Cade legit pissed me off because I was rolling with him (playing butterfly guard, not even going hard) and he threw up his hands and shouted "this guy is too big, I can't roll with him!" What a fucking asshole. Similar story with Shigeki.
Today's lesson is that Black Beltch does not always equal smart or humble. It just means they don't have tattoos or Rasta hair. Fortunately, I've had the privilege of only training with coaches who don't talk shit about every gym they have visited more than once.
Oh and searching on Google he seems a legit BJJ competitor, one blog called him a SoCal BJJ Legend.
yea heres a highlight of him and video of him chocking out Brandon Quick in under 45 secs "The iron is killing me..." he says about it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igOyblZ2dXQ&t=3m13s
hmmmm intresting, kinda disrespectful calling out Rogan like that especially since he says hes friends with everyone there and trains there all the time.
I just read the whole thing. I missed the part where he said he was friends with people.
Either way, after reading that thread, I have some thoughts.
I'm an introspective dude and I'm not the type to just write off criticism. At least acknowledging criticism and scanning it for possible truth will help you a lot.
That being the case, I can say I'm humbled. I know that 10th planet is not the end all. But it's no doubt effective. We have seen it work at a high level. So it's not bunk. But I suppose the criticism about not having basics may have some merit.....? I'm just a few month old white belt so what do I know? But I'm just saying, maybe he's right.
On the other hand, 10th P is still relatively young. Add to that that we don't have (from what I know) actual competition TEAMS. We have guys who like to compete. So guys like Lloyd Irvin and Galvao are going to have dominant teams because they have actual competition teams who focus on competition. It's not rocket science. That's not a knock to the effectiveness of 10th planet. Considering that 10th is also mostly catered to being better JJ for MMA, the amount of competition gold isn't really a knock to its effectiveness either. I'd say compare traditional mma BJJ to 10th Planet in MMA and you'd see quickly which one is more effective. It may not be the most effective competition based BJJ, but it's not throwaway material either.
Also, don't we have a lot of guys who take home medals? I'd say we're doing something right.
In the end, I believe in the system. I also believe that the supposed holes in the system are actively being worked on. I've never gotten a sense from Eddie or Coach Herzog that the system's complete and we don't need to work on anything else. In fact, after the worlds, Eddie made a post about what we should work on to be more successful as a whole. We might want to stickie that just as a constant reminder to get better. But, just because there's room for improvement doesn't mean the system is ineffective. And it's silly to lower the quality of our wins as "a tap due to novelty." No, a tap means something works. Accept it.
What 10th planet represents to me is an evolution. It's not complete. It's still evolving. But overall, you can't deny that it is effective.
Haters can tend to be liars. One guy came into riverside then left claiming he was tapping everyone and the talent wasn't as good etc. I asked those guys what happened, and told them what dude said, and all they could say was, "Uh, yeah like that really happened.".
So, yeah in the end, haters("competitors"), will try to discredit. That's why I say beleive half of what you see, and none of what you read. Hahahaha!
If you mean he didn't teach you a standard arm bar from mount where your opponent tries to push you off extending his arms and you wrap one arm outside and one arm inside and stack your hands on his chest and rotate your hips to set up the arm bar. Well he did you a favor anybody with more than a few weeks of training won't push you away he will protect his arms and you will have to transition to knee on belly to create movement or skydive and work for a head and arm choke.
....But Im sure he covers core principals like hip movement, position and control.
LOL, not saying that at all.
He was speaking about the guys he's rolled with. I've read that criticism before. But like I said, I'm only a few month old white belt, so what do I know? I don't know. I just know that sometimes it's good to consider criticism. And I do wonder why the top no gi guys are techincally gi guys......? Maybe Denny will change that at Ultimate Absolute. Either way, I believe in the system. And I'm no doubt content with the instruction I'm getting.
If you go through that thread, one of the commentors mentioned that our blue belts smashed him easily while there were no blue belts in Ralph Gracies team that could smash him so quickly. So for sure coach knows what he's doing. You trouble making MF'er. Haha.
haha I just wanted to see you squirm.
Just another hater...nothing to see here move along.
bunch of bullshit
I knew I couldn't trust that dude. He comes by HQ about once a year, maybe twice. His instructor is the dude I named the "baby wipe" after, Joa Silva, son of Aloiso Silva. That match was on my Twister dvd, he's the guy I twistered that had the runs before our match. His fathered even threatened to sue me. I'm not surprised he's on the internet talking shit now, I had a feeling I couldn't trust him :)
That makes me happy he's just bitter. I couldn't read very far into that thread, too much 10th Planet negativity.
I've seen quite a few threads like this and they motivate me to train harder, compete more often and be a better representative of the system. :)
was reading his stuff on reddit too, sounds like a douche
From Redit:
"FWIW, I've trained at both one of Ralph Gracie's schools and the 10th Planet Rochester affiliate (Chris Herzog's school). I trained there for a few months while I was in the process of moving out of the country, partly because I was curious, partly because I wanted to see if their guys were any good.
On the one hand, I loved the way the 10th Planet school taught techniques. (Probably not indicative of how all 10th Planet affiliates do things.) Essentially, they'd teach a series on a particular half guard transition or a sequence in full guard or whatever, but he'd go into great detail and every single class for the whole week was the same exact thing, just with more details. During sparring, you were given explicit instructions to try to execute the technique covered earlier in the session. If you got too far away from that technique positionally, just reset.
So that was the good. On the other hand, the skill level of many of their guys was pretty terrible. I kept catching people in straight arm locks from full guard and at least twice, the response was something like, "Woah, I've never seen that before!" I feel like those things are pretty basic, and it's a bit embarrassing for anybody who's been training 3-6 months to have never seen some of the basics before. This is probably the down side to always going in-depth: You get deep knowledge of a particular move sequence, but without the broad knowledge of what's possible, you're going to have gaping holes in your game.
On the other hand, there were at least two guys at the 10th Planet gym who could effortlessly decimate me in seconds. Blue belts I believe. Not a single blue at the Ralph Gracie school in California could take me apart the way those two were. Mind you, there are a couple blues at Ralph's school that will consistently beat me, but not in seconds; they're working for it. And in that case, it was actually the same story: They were using moves I wasn't familiar with and didn't know how to counter or defend.
But on balance, there's no question that the Ralph Gracie school had more high-level talent, better sparring partners, better competitors, and I will probably always consider it to be my home school. I feel like there's a lot to learn from both sides, and as someone who trains both gi and no-gi, I feel like pretending that 10th Planet doesn't exist is a losing strategy. I think there are a ton of things in the 10th Planet game that can be beaten, but only if you're actually familiar with their game in the first place.
"
Then when asked if he was basing his experience on working with other white belts
"It's 10th planet, they don't exactly wear their belts. I can only guess what belts they are. I know the ranks of a few of them, since a few do the colored rash-guard thing, but completely uncertain on the rest.
Also see GarleyCavidson's comment elsewhere in the thread where he basically said something similar about 10th planet headquarters."

LOL I have no idea who sporkmonger is on redit. But I can guarantee he never did what he claims. Chances are he never even rolled in my school, and for sure he was only in the beginner classes. He may have done minute situation drills, and if he was tapping anyone out with straight armbars from the guard it was against guys that had only been training a month or two. Ask around, anyone thats from an outside school and rolls at my gym, gets the shit tapped out of them. I've seen blues, purples and even brown belts from other schools get tapped out by my white belts while rolling in the Roc. This dude is full of shit, and if he ever comes back to my school, will get an old fashion ass whoopin, and I'll let him pick which white belt does it.
If anyone is on reddit can you ask him his name.
"It was all about playing your game, stylistically. Allowing the 10thP guys to suck you into their world was an easy way to get tapped, but if you could keep them in the more classic jiu jitsu positions you were fine. Now the instructor and his upper belts were just animals to begin with and had trained all over the damn place so they were nasty, but the whites and blues could all be taken care of by stopping their attempts to use strict 10th planet moves."
I agree with this. I get tapped by basic stuff like straight arm-locks from the full guard, pop triangles, and all manner of guillotine chokes. Am I embarrassed? No. Do I want to plug those holes in my game? Of course. But a blue belt does not a master make, and I know that it will all come together in time.
He is friends and trains with Dustin. I rolled with him. I don't see my name mentioned.
Ha.......These people just never know when to shut the fuck up and train harder. What a dick, and to be openly owned by Eddie is just brilliant. So many douche bags on this planet its fricken ridiculous. Its funny you know. So many similar stories world wide in all affiliates. Its just the way it is! A dick will always be a dick, and lies have very short legs. It will always catch up with you especially in our art and in all Martial Arts.
Trolls... it wasn't worth to read the reddit thread full of trolls... but thanks for sharing :)
Hiya. That's me. And yes, I've been to your school. Yes, it was the beginner classes. Didn't say otherwise, though probably should have clarified that. I'll edit my post. Trained with you guys for two months before I moved to Nairobi, Kenya. To be honest, no disrespect was intended, and apologies if it sounded disrespectful.
In my head, I was comparing beginner class to beginner class, but it sounds like that's not how it was interpreted. I can't say shit about the content of your advanced classes, since I've never been to them. Would've gone, but you suggested I should stick to the beginner classes. Ralph's school you can show up to whatever class you like, you just get beat up more at the advanced classes.
In my post I said those guys had been training for only a couple months, but that's at least something I stand by. I learned not to reach forward and grab behind someone's neck while in full guard in my first week of class. And damn if I didn't learn that the hard way. Was icing my elbows every day for awhile because I kept forgetting not to do that. Can't remember who it was I tapped to it, but it happened twice for sure. I just kinda figured the first time was a fluke, but started drawing conclusions on the second time around.
Did two months or so with 10th Planet Rochester, starting with escapes from mount, into boa sweep series, moving on to full guard stuff, swim move, and spider web. But in two months of coming every single class, that was all we learned in terms of technique. Please understand, that's not a criticism. For me, at my own level of development, that's exactly what I needed. I don't actually do very well learning a different technique, completely divorced from positional context every single day. The shotgun approach sucks after awhile. I loved the way you taught the boa sweep series in particular, because I learned each of the entrances and exits in the course of a week and a half or so. The Guantanamo has become my go-to escape from mount, and even though I've seen the Gracies teach that one too, I learned it way better from you than I did from them, purely because of the way you taught it.
But I'm not convinced that's necessarily the best solution for teaching someone with precisely zero jiu jitsu knowledge. If I had been starting with nothing at all, I'd much rather have my first day be all about weight, leverage, positioning, base, center of gravity stuff, and the rest of my first week or two be about nothing but survival, defense, and counters. I don't know how you do that while avoiding a scenario where the rank beginners hold back the rest of the class, but I still don't think even a white belt a few months in should be getting tapped out to straight arm locks by virtue of sticking their hand in a really dumb place, and especially not by another white belt with shitty technique. Also when we covered Guantanamo, during sparring sessions after, a ton of the other guys were giving up their backs to me over and over again while trying to push down the knee, which was an issue that didn't get covered during the technique portion of the class. And I was a little surprised that you didn't correct them while we were rolling, because hell if I didn't get chewed out every time I did a shitty whip-up. I dunno, maybe chew people out for giving up their backs too?
In any case, I welcome my old-fashioned ass whoopin', assuming I'm still welcome when I'm in town. I'm a sucker for learning shit the hard way.
I will say this: My favorite thing about 10th planet is that you guys are creative and open minded. Hopefully that includes being open to a bit of well-meant criticism.

Shit, I hate drama. Put away your damn popcorn. :-P
Edit: One more reason I should maybe post less. Harder to put your foot in your mouth.
