I am just wondering how others that train at a gi school deal with not getting rank since you dont wear a gi?

seems like a simple fix.
put the gi on if you want a rank.
other wise train hard and dont worry what rank you are, worry how much you know.
I thinking about taking the gi off for ever! I dont roll with it at all but, just put it on at the start of class in order to get rank...lol
I'm surprised Joe doesn't care if you don't wear a gi. That's is cool of him for doing that being Gracie bara. Although, I guess you give up being ranked under him if you never put one on when rolling.
If you're in a gi class, put the gi on!
If you're doing an Iaido class better bring at least a bokken...
you don't want to bring only a knife to a gun fight, right?
jon he has given me rank 4 stripes on my white. He has been really cool with no gi he just likes it if we wear a gi ... He told me that thier is to many politics now in ju jitsu that peolple are to worried about no gi and gi instead of just loving the art itself ...I put it on to show respect for his school and to get rank that it...lol I still dont like putting it on as i fill like its a monkey suit or something..lol
I only go to the no gi classes which means i never get ranked. it doesnt normaly bother me but when you see everyone around you going up to blue and purple you feel left behined. i decided this week im going to give in and buy a gi. i think il start doing 1 or 2 gi classes aswell as my no gi clasess each week so that i can grade. i want a blue belt!
I go to a no-gi only school. But I don't think it would bother me if I keep tapping people who train in the gi. Who cares. If rank is so important put your vids together and get ranked by Eddie online. Other than that train, compete, and let the gold you bring home speak for your rank.
I don't mind the Gi that much,I mainly grab the body but I try to be aware of where the grips are. Gi chokes are handy as up here in Wi people wear jackets 6 monthes out of the year! What I do mind abot Gi schools is all the ritual and dogma that goes with Jiu Jitsu. Nothig is sacred, and effectiveness is what really matters,so why all the bowing and Brazillian worship? I don't hesitate to modify a move so that it will work for my body type. Jiu Jitsu schools,in general, are becoming traditional and conservative. So,Gi,NoGi,it doesn't matter to me. Thinking for yourself, putting in your reps, that gets my respect....
When I pay to train underneath another instructor or coach I am paying to audit their knowledge and learn from them. If they want me to wear a gi, I wear the gi, because I paid to travel through their curriculum and their logic. Acting in opposition of my instructor would just seem like a waste of money.
That's just me though.
I train at a pretty much Gi oriented school and I have no problem training in either. What I do is mostly do only moves that transition smoothly in both. With the gi I grab only underhooks and overhooks and go for chokes,,North-South, arm triangles, darce so when I take the gi off its not much different. A couple of differences but not many.
People are fucking "cry babies" everything you can do no Gi, you can do with the GI, under overs with Gable, still works with the GI.
just because your wearing the GI, doesn't mean your confined to only GI grips. All of you new Jit's players are starting to be "Really Spoiled" just be glad you have so many options these days, When I started in 96 you had to learn what little jiu jitsu you could get your hands on, no matter how good or bad the instruction was. We were just happy to be learning. I Guess All of this Gi no GI "Cry Baby" shit is why there giving out Green Belts now. Because Americans tend to complain to much and need a Pat on the Back
^this.
I trained no gi for 6 years in a mma school, never got ranked, now i regret it because one day i would like to teach but everyone asks "what belt are you?" No matter how many gold metals you have the first thing someone asks is your qualifications/rank as a teacher. Now i am training both and i have basically had to start over/white belt.( yes i have got my blue now ) I am advancing faster cus i am tapping higher ranks but now i have to put in more time than if i would have done gi from the beginning. It will make me better i guess, but what I'm trying to say is it depends on your goal in the sport. That is the only reason belts/rank matters to me, i would love to have a gym of my own one day, a 10th planet affiliate school. ;)
If your at a Gi school you need to use a Gi otherwise your just asking to be singled out its just the reality of the situation, sometimes you have no choice but to go to a school that only dose Gi jiujitsu depending on where you live in the end if you choose to attend that type of Academy then thats the stipulations that your agreeing to. Once you agree to attend an Academy you should also know that your agreeing to respect that schools teaching and beliefs even if you dont necessarily agree with them. Its your choice if you dont like or respect the way they do buisiness then leave simple as that otherwise respect the way they do things and be a sponge and learn all that you can.
i train in jujitsu for mma purposes then so if i do a grappling competition what ranked belts will i go against or is it just open and you go against everyone in your weight class?
At least with the gi on, you can do your same no gi grips but with a handful of cloth at the end of them. Sometimes when you don't have a gi, then you will be subjected to the no gi variations of your gi instructor. So you might be made to do a no gi variation that relies heavily on wrist and head control rather than overhook and posture via RG control.
So you still might not get what you want.
