Hey guys... I origionally posted this article in response to another post but I feel its worthy of its own post.
I was turned on to this a LONG time ago and I truly believe visualization is a HUGE advantage for Jiu Jitsu practitioners. Pro Athletes use these same skills on a daily basis... Mayne you should 2 ;)

Visualization is key. And not just visualizing your hands raised at the end in victory either. What separates the successful competitors is how they visualize exactly what they're going to do in competition to win, how they get to the "V" at the end. That's what the true key/talent is in proper visualization

Great article, I learned about visualization from one of my coaches in football over 13 years ago and I still do it. I watch every technique im trying to learn like its game film and run the movements thur my head. I dont get to go to more then 2 or 3 classes a week so I try and make each one count. Visualizing the techniques that we go over at the gym really helps me understand every thing so much better. Ive even hit moves that ive never reped just by watching them, breaking them down and visualizing them multiple times.

I've used this technique in the past but I've kind of gotten away from it. For some reason I think too much and try to figure out my opponent before the match. It does work sometimes but often I get stuck somewhere because I have 3 options and I never make a decision. I've got to find a way of clearing my head again.

I think I can help with that... Before a match or skirmish in the gym is not the best time to visualize... It requires a calm/quite atmosphere where you can visualize or focus on just 1 technique over and over again and a quasi-meditative state. It's an alone time practice. I coach my students to focus on on sub or transition or movement for a solid week. The idea is to visualize a series and flow it through in your mind. Tonight in class (rolling) I wanted to play butterfly guard to JJ sweep to knee-on to coma choke --- The failed coma choke bail-out was to dive over to Japanese neck-tie. I visualized this move in meditation for a good hour this after noon while stretching and relaxing on the mat.

Neale has already heard this but, i come from an action sports background,(bmx) and visualization comes into play alot. if you don't visualize your stunt there is no use pulling on the bars, because cuz you're gonna eat shit. i feel the same about jiu-jitsu. if you can see your path how you gonna walk it?!?
