Just joined, question or two and a hello.

Hi, not to much to say about me.
21 year old college student out of Texas, fairly new to jiu-jitsu.
I'm sure I'll have a good time posting here, but I have a few questions.


First I just wanna see what everyone here thinks of Gracie University.
I myself thought it was a great idea to be able to train from home, and in their video about it they said all you needed to do for your first belt was to learn and demonstrate that you can preform the techniques to qualify.
I was more excited that they had the videos up to watch than the ability to get a belt, but I felt a little bit mislead.
They said "all you need to do", but left out the 80 dollar fee, and that's just to send in a video.
No telling if you actually pass.
Didn't like the lack of a forum either...it says forum, but it's really just a FAQ section.

At the moment though, it's my only source of information that's actually structured.
As in "this is what you learn first, then this, then this" ect ect.


Which leads to question number two.
I'm already going to be buying Eddie's books, but does anyone know any other good books for starting out, preferably ones structured to show from the basics onto more advanced things?


Lastly....anyone from Texas?
Wish there were more places to train near me.

Where in Texas are you? Theres a moon (affiliate) in El Passo and Sherman.
I really dont know enough about Gracie University to really have an opinion on it. Sounds like a cool idea but I think without a good instructor your learning is retarded a bit. Im assuming for your second question youre looking for no gi? Or just anything good?

The town I live in has only been on the map for a short while, and most people a town over don't even know it by name.
I'm close to Richmond and Alvin though.

Also, both preferably.
Who doesn't feel awesome in a Gi?

Saulo Ribeiro's Jiu Jitsu University is awesome. I also like BJ Penn's Closed Guard book. And one thats a bit more advanced but is a must Marcelo Garcia X Guard

Welcome to the dark side! I used to live in Laredo and can understand the bfe statements about small ass Texas towns. Welcome to the family though.

Welcome to the forum I understand where your at man Im in a small town also. It depends on what exactly you want and How far you are willing to travel I think your pretty close to Paradigm and I think they have a pretty good no gi schedule and they have a wrestling program which is a plus. Carlo Prater did train there not sure if he still does. Your probably a couple hours in either direction from an official hot box one in Beaumont with Brian Debes a blue belt under Eddie and one in Lockheart (see the sticky hotbox thread) Your probably 7hrs from Sherman an official moon.

i train at Gracie Barra and i believe we have a couple guys that live down in Alvin and 1 of the guys told me he drives like 45 minutes or so to webster to train at Draculinos....they have both gi and no gi classes there as well...welcome to the JJ world

I drive about 30-40 minutes to get to Alvin for college as well though. lol

After I'm done with college I plan on moving to Nevada.
Not for training based reasons, but I'm sure it could prove to be useful to live there.

It'd be hard to make the trip, but if the chance comes up, for sure.

Im in a small ass town in tx also. Your best bet to start the 10th planet system is to get some mats the MTRG books and dvds, then youll need a homie, and get to work thats what I did. 10th Planet sherman is 10 hours away from me and so is 10th Planet El Paso. I say make the trip to Brians hotbox. If I could I would.
