First time competing as a brown belt in the gi.....oh boy! It's not gonna be good!
You've been brown + for a long time dude you just have the belt to prove it now. Just do your thing.
Lol I am not very spectacular in the gi though! :)
Blitzkrieg man. Attack first and fast and make him defend then go from there. This is my strategy when I am honestly intimidated.
I feel stupid in the gi I grabbing cloth and trying to wrap it around their neck and things aren't working, it's pretty lame for me. I know once I get a few things down I will pick it up pretty quick.
My go to shit in the gi is Ezekiel chokes, you can catch them from almost anywhere including your opponents guard. Also if you can open up their gi and flip a lapel (i may be using incorrect nomenclature, the bottom of their gi) up and over one of their shoulders from inside your guard it makes for a really tight way to control posture and make your rubber guard even more effective. Being a brown belt your knowledge level is obviously several orders of magnitude above mine so i hope you don't mind my offering some tips, but i train in the gi a lot and thought i would share some of my better gi techniques. Good luck!
Lol I dont mind some advice. I am humble enough to know I dont know everything and can take something from anything offered! Thank you.Quote:

are you talking about subleague comming up or is there a tourney i dont know about?
Mike, with my limited experience in the gi, I can at least give you this advice that works for me.
1) Don't let them grab your lapel
2) if the grab your lapel, you better grab their lapel.(hand for hand)
3) if they have one hand on the lapel, at all costs, don't let them grab your gi or lapel with the other hand- a choke or a pass is imminent.
Rock your brown belt. Be the aggressor. Your nogi techs work well in the gi too. Lock em down, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Mike, 60% of the time, this choke works EVERY TIME.

Really though, you're one of the most talented competitors I've seen man. Hell you have endorsements. Win or lose, this level of competition can only up your game. Enjoy brother!
Ezekiels might be able to be gotten from everywhere, but they're also super easy to defend.
The main difference I see in gi is in the passing game. It is way easier to pass with pant/lapel grips IMO.
I haven't been on the forum long and I'm not known through out it , but I read just about everything and watch all the vids posted. I have seen some of your match's, man your gonna kill it gi no gi, ur good man. Besides you got the 10 on ur back. Good luck man I'm routing for you.
Just go in there and fight your fight. Youre a beast.
you must pray to the God Of Gi, Renatch Laranjch.....say 15 Our Caralhos and 10 Hail Porras, and you'll be fine.
all 10p game is based on overhooks, underhooks, head control and 2 on 1 stick to that and you will be good
Dont be scared homie!! hahah just go in there and do your thing, your a beast! :)
Just don't dominate too bad, you think they hate 10th p now, wait until you wreck their pajama party!
If you at at any time take his back and can't find the choke, use his lapels and frustrate him by grinding them against him digging the knuckles, eventually he'll make his move usually to explode out of the hold. Keep it tight to his neck and if he attacks the lapel grip the RNC is there all day. You will most likely have superior flexibility than most of the competitors and if at any time you can scissor a leg behind his neck for leverage it's usually takes a few seconds and nighty night, also leads into some pretty vicious set up for armbars. Logan pretty much nailed it when he said the Ezekiel choke are able to be set up from almost any position. These were set ups I used a lot in Judo. Basic, but I hope it helped.
