10th Planet vs 10th Planet

Anyone of us who own a 10th Planet school (or for those who train at one) know that we are constantly facing each other on the mats in our schools. Since your instructor is teaching everyone the 'same' moves and counters, it makes for some interesting rolling. I get this question all the time via Submissions 101:

How do I defend against the Rubber Guard? How do you break it?

The best way is the PRACTICE it and roll with guys who USE it. Plain and simple. I am often amazed when I see people put up videos of how to smash and break the rubber guard when you know full well their school doesn't use it or practice it on a frequent basis.

The RG isn't a magical guard that can't be broken or defended against. It is however a real son of a bitch if you don't know the paths and what to expect. When I get BJJ players from other schools come and play with us, I am always amazed how well my white belts do against them. Why? Because simple shit that wouldn't work on each other WILL work on those who don't know the style.

The fact that we know the system FORCES us to evolve it further and come up with stuff to counter our classmates. Just look at Jean Marc's (aka Red) Ginger Snap video!

As Eddie once said " I am not athletic so I use TRICKS to get the submissions."

There is a lot to be said for guile and cunning.

Anyone else have this experience?

I watched a sub 101 video a year or so back where you made the same assertion...but yeah I train @ a Rickson affiliate and people look shook to say the least the first time my instep finds it's way under their chin. lol We have 3 schools in the metro area and people comment on how good students @ our location are at keeping their hands off the mat...I like to think that in some small way my hubber guardch helped make that happen.

As a general rule for jiu jitsu, you are always suppose to keep your hands off the mat ;-)

I've really experienced this in tournaments. Its A LOT easier to catch tournament opponents with the 10th planet basics than it is to catch teammates

I'm excited about that fact. In order to learn to defend 10pjj techniques, they will have to start drilling 10pjj techniques. At that point they might as well be 10pjj disciples...

This is true, however it's a lot easier to get a hand on the mat for a second if your opponent doesn't equate that with instant death.

Definitely Ari. It forces everybody to evolve their game. Which plays right into your other thread. :) I have to get tricky with all of my top guys. It's a good feeling though, because I know that they are evolving right with me. When my old tricks don't work on them anymore I know they are improving.

I wish there was more 10th planet affiliates over here (Sweden). Really need one in Gothenburg... Free beer for any one who comes over and open one up, and if you open up by April 20th I´ll throw in something special ;)

Alex the Swede - where you train at now?

Used to train with Pilo at Yamasaki. Loved it there but now due to conveniences (Family, kid, job and location) I train with Ferocitas MMA. Great bunch of guys, excellent physical workout and only no-gi sparring. And most importantly for me right now, their location. Can´t beat 15 min door to door when I go training. Funny how time becomes a factor once you get kids and stuff hehe ;)

I always wanted to try my hand at mma, and I have to try it out before I get to old. But my favorite will always be grappling or BJJ.
