Just got my foot popped in sparring today. Can barely walk.

Some badass who trains regularly at Tristar and Brazilian Top Team came to my school to do a drop in class. I volunteer to spar with him, like I usually do with everyone who comes to my school. I go really relaxed. He comes at me like a bull and then at some point goes 100% for my foot and pops it. Now I can barely walk. For obvious reasons, this really sucks for me. A part of my livelihood depends on my ability to run a martial arts school and teach. I spar every single day with all my students and now I can barely move around. I have 3 competitions lined up for October and November and now all that is probably not going to happen. I think that I probably have to set some parameters before sparring with people I don't know.

Leglocks are so dangerous, I'm always okay with tapping early to them. Better to start again than get your knee reaped.

not a fan of those types. i like to roll because it is a mental chess match. if someone locks me in something that i either cant get out of or it puts me in a fair amount of pain but not enough to tap if it were a competition, id still tap. i have a job so i cant play rambo on the mat just tap and restart.

What a douche bag. Just lock it up and give a brother time to tap. I just don't understand that mentality.

I want my coach 100% healthy. This sucks.

I train at Southwest MMA in Phoenix. We aren't Eddie Bravo affiliated or with anyone, for that matter. But I feel badly for you. That injury takes months to heal from. Why do that to a person? Especially someone with experience who should obviously know better. Pretty sad. Jitsu is really a battle of you versus you, what you can apply, what you can do, learning to relent when in advantage and learning to accept the tap when not. Sad that some people are just that way. Well, best of luck. And you are Canadian, too. Must have been an American who did it! Canadians are so nice. Ha, just kidding with the generalizations. Feel better.

Btw, you know when we had that convo, where you asked me if I fear getting hurt, and I said, bluntly, 'no'.
Since then, my body suddenly started falling apart. Some tendon ish in my shoulder developed, then I hyper extended my elbow (wasn't even rolling), brutally stubbed my toe last week, plus I hurt my groin while, get this, laughing too hard at a joke (has that ever happened to anyone?).

I was asking myself, "is this what they mean when your body falls apart?". My problem has always been that I ignore injuries (if not debilitating like the ones you encounter) and keep training. :(

I watched a guy footlock somone recently. He grabbed the foot when the guys leg was fully extended, the guy started tapping and he didnt let the submission go till the leg was twisted all the way up to just about the small of his back. It was terrible, the guy was tapping for like two or three seconds.

On another note, its a credit to you Louis that you roll with everyone who comes to your gym. A lot of people wont put themselves on the line.

Sorry to hear that bro. I hate when shit like that happens. I live in a very small community and had to travel 3 hours to train. It took me 4 years to get my blue and after that I decided to start a club near my home. I dealt with guys coming in all the time who, for some reason, when they stepped on my puzzle mats they thought they were stepping into the main event of the UFC. I have to say that for you Louis to roll with everyone who walks through your door is truly respectable, and sucks that you may have to reconsider this policy. I want to know, how did this dude act after the incident?

To his credit, he was VERY apologetic after this happened. He heard the pop and let go. I said, "did you hear that?". He nodded. I got a burning sensation in my foot soon afterwards. I was pretty calm about it, but on the inside I was like "DAMN, I can't believe this just happened". He actually bowed his head towards me. He seemed genuinely sorry. But, when you go for foot attacks and crank 100%, shit like that is going to happen. I've decided that, after I get better, I will still roll with everyone who walks in the door. However, I will issue a warning about leg attacks beforehand.

Damn louis, sorry to hear that bro, take it easy and maybe even visit the doctor and make sure that theres no serious damage. I'm like you and roll very relaxed with my students as our job is to teach and make them better. I get caught sometimes being to relaxed and have to remind myself that some guys need to be handled a little stiffer. Sounds like this guy is a real douche, hope you get better soon.

heal quick! a break is better than having a vicious sprain though... that is why we rep leg and ankle locks, but we only allow straight ankle locks while we roll.... all others are only done while under supervision... i've seen way too many knees and ankles blown. take care

At least it wasn't a neck crank.

A cranked neck sucks. The problem with a blown ankle is that I have to put pressure on it to get around. And on top of that, the limping aggravates my lower back. Sounds pretty depressing. I need to focus on the healing process. :)

Sounds like he had his competition hat on, yanking everything at mach 5. Even if people get stubborn and don't tap the worst they get from me is a bizarre look of disbelief and a sprained limb. That breaking point is very tangible on most submissions, especially the toe hold. When you hit that dense wall of pressure, made up of tendons, tissue, and bone, it's time to ease up and wait for the tap.

I sympathize with my boy Louis and I hope you heal up quick, being a coach thats injured sucks.

However the talk about leglocks being "more dangerous" is getting outta hand. "Ignorance" about leg locks (how to properly apply them and defend them) is what makes them dangerous. I find the people that generally get hurt from leg locks are those that have excuses for why they should be illegal, outlawed, reserved for high ranks (another problem in itself), prior to the injuries themselves, because they rather make excuses then put their asses to work and learn something new and put the reps in to get better. It along the same lines as people resisting the Rubber Guard (its doesn't work, you'll blow out your knees, etc.). The people that can't get it to work or hurt themselves get injured because they don't know wtf they're doing and don't give the techniques the respect, attention and time in they deserve and can't shed their ego long enough to go train with someone that can learn from.

Damn this is serendipity !!! I have a new student that has a wrestling background. And I'm trying to instill in him to " Relax " this is not a competition when rolling. Even while technical rolling " Very Light " he still can't control that "Wrestler Crazy Monkey" Aggression, and focus on technique. Thats why I don't let "White Belts" roll with other "White Belts" Their to focused on trying to win and it's not about "Wining", And when they don't listen and keep going "Hard" then I "choke" them until they learn. And leg locks are not allowed with Lower Belts "Period". I don't think Wrestlers have any Idea of how "Annoying" they can be to roll with, There aggression isn't getting them anywhere, and just makes Me want to " Choke " them to get their " Sweaty Greesy Asses" off of me. For the "Millionth" time, Jiu Jitsu is "Not" Wrestling, "Relax"
