Traditional jiu jitsu vs. 10th planet jiu jitsu

So today I was told to work on "Traditional Jiu Jitsu" before I begin practicing 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. Any thoughts on this? I was told this because I prefer half guard over full guard because I am short and work with bigger people. My full guard isn't great and all I can do with it is wait til they open it then try to pass and I either sweep or pull half guard then sweep. I also enjoy butterfly guard. But I am finding myself mostly on my back or with someone on my back, which doesn't bother be I have good defense. But I spend more time going through positions then going straight for a submission. I feel I can pull of a submission anytime I choose to, except I feel it doesn't help my training if I'm just tapping people left and right. Some feedback would be nice, Thanks.

keep doing what your doing. train 10thp and traditional. just keep working on your full guard and it will come. if you like play HG then get your HG game super tight. and keep reping 10thp

    My whitebelt experience:
I learn what I can, where I can. From Eddie's books to youtube videos to the technique videos here. But also pay attention to whatever you're taught at the gym you pay. If they want to call it traditional jiu-jitsu or whatever. The problem instructors may have is that they're teaching you the basics or what they want you to learn at our white belt level. But when we roll they don't want to see us immediately pull rubber guard, and go for flying chill dogs or anything. I imagine our instructors first want us to know what we're paying to learn. And that's learning from them. My instructor is open minded enough to know that there's a lot of good moves out there, but fundamentals is important. A good understanding of traditional jiu-jitsu And 10th Planet jiu-jitsu is a beautiful thing. Using tools and techniques from both to add to your arsenal. Knowledge is power. Sometimes your traditional stuff is going to be shut down by someone rolling with you. Change it up and use 10th Planet techniques. Maybe you can catch your opponent with that. Or if not switch back to traditional and see if there's an opening for something.

Did this happen during open mat, during class, during a drill? Do you go to a gym or is just a bunch of guys?

Well In my opinion 10th p is just a piece. What good is rubber guard if you don't understand all the other parts of Jiu Jitsu especially the basics Personally I learned 10th p faster and understood it better because I trained for a long time at a traditional school. Training in a go won't help you w your MMA and no gi comps and vice versa. I trained at a 10p school where the newest blue belt had no idea what quarter guard was. That says alot to me.

Eddie put it best. 10p is two big ass fuckin guns in each hand, just gotta learn to load and shoot 'em.(not exact quote). All the fundamentals are bases and body armor. Of course both are best and will come. But if Im in a battle and I had to choose. Give me the bfg's.

Lets not forget an oft forgotten piece of Jiu Jitsu is its PRACTICAL application to save your life on the street. I would bet that even Eddie wouldn't jump to rubber guard from standing in a street fight, or even try to triangle. I know there's some crazy videos out there and all but realistically theres way more to know in defending yourself than the SPORT application on the mat.

My BJJ instructor incorporates a lot of OLD SCHOOL (call it traditional or GI style if you must) Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Thats where he got HIS black belt anyhow, and thats what he's mastered. OLD SCHOOL is potent stuff, in the gym, in competition, and very importantly on the street.

That all said, its all good. Bruce Lee's style was that there is no style but your own style that you craft for your use. A friendly bout in training is different than sport grappling is different than fighting for your life on the street. Like a tradesman or a musician, theres an instrument and tone for every time and place, the more efficiently you can perform the better.

    Just gotta keep training.

Well when my lifes in danger on the street I'm not going to pull guard and use rubber guard. In a controlled environment such as a comp or MMA fight 10p is cool but if someones trying to kill you or your family are you going to put them in a gogoplata? This just my opinion no disrespect. I ve trained for a good amount of time at both places.
