im just starting out and i think it should be mandatory for all students to be clean before rolling.
a sheet of"suggestion for hygien" would be benificial for everyone and give a little piece of mind.
some people dont know the risks of all the nasties on the mat and potentialy on your partners body.

IF YOU GOT SOME SHIT DONT SPREAD IT

It does not matter how clean you keep a gym, with extensive person to person contact, spreading nasties like ring worm are bound to happen. Like Brent said, if you can't handle it, you're in the wrong sport.

Shower immediately following practice, actually examine your body, do NOT use antibacterial soap (I recomend a anti fungal soap like Defense) antibacterial soap kills the bad and good bacterial thats necessary to kill off fungus and bad staph.

    Agree 100%

10th P. Rochester does more than just BJJ, so on occasion you'll get a training partner who's already sweaty before you even start. Such is life. In the end, you're both gonna be covered in sweat anyway. Shower AFTER ASAP though.

And I gotta cosign Coach Herzog. I have sensitive skin and I was picking up ringworm pretty easily. Started using Defense Soap and haven't had it since.

Same at chicago, there will be a bjj class then muay thai class then another bjj class, with people staying for all three, after the 3-4 hours of bjj and muay thai, im pretty sweaty and smelly and guys coming in for the late class have to deal with that ;P

Also if you can't shower right away get some defense soap wipes ; you get 40 for like 8$ so for 20 cents your able to clean and sanitize yourself immediately after training until you can shower and its super quick and easy....

I wrestled and have done Jiu-Jitsu for years and haven't (knock on wood) picked up anything too nasty. Ring Worm is just a fungus (no worse than athletes foot) and staph, well if you get staph usually it hits areas where you have an open wound so you are also to blame for not covering your own cuts, scrapes, road rash etc before rolling. Plus, most places that I have ever been too clean the mats regularly and if you don't see them ask them. If you think they could be cleaner do it yourself. Nothing wrong with cleaning mats at your dojo/training center. In fact I see it as a sign of respect.

Also, I have heard that head and shoulders is good to shower with (as a soap not a shampoo) anyone know anything about this? I know a few wrestlers who swear by it.

I think the worse thing I hit is when fools don't trim their finger/toe nails often. That shit makes me more mad.

Whatevs man i don't mind if you have "i just did another class smelliness" but that's diff then "Dude i got so fucked up this weekend I haven't showered in 4 days." smelly. If you haven't showered in 4 days....come on.....that is unacceptable.

Washing your gear is critical too. Many guys train multiple days a week and even tho they may be wearing different rashguards and shorts each day (emphasis on the MAY), often times they will wear the same ankle/knee sleeves that have been sitting at the bottom of a gym bag soaked in sweat from the last class. At the very least take them out and hand-wash them in the sink with some anti-bacterial soap, it takes 2 min and they dry in no time. Nothing worse than getting gogo'd by a guy with nasty ankle sleeves!

Having said that, I've accepted that people are lazy and if you wanna do jiu jitsu you're going to have to man up and deal with some stank in the gym. It's like people who won't share drinks normally but if it's got alcohol in it or they're getting passed a joint they suddenly don't care about the germs. I'm not going to go rubbing up on some bums at 711 but when I'm on the mats I put it outta my mind and just roll.
