Problems with my lockdown

I haven't been here in a while so I'm sorry if someone already asked something similar.

Here's problem #1:
I get the lockdown with my legs but can't get double underhooks. my opponent has the over under control and puts alot of shoulder pressure on my face. I know that i shouldn't be flat on my back but it sometimes happens and i can't do the jaws of life and i can't shove my hand in there to get the double underhooks. What should I do?

Here's problem #2:
in competition, i was submitted with an americana and i had a good lockdown in. I usually don't get hit with that in practice but he got me good (after trying 5 different times) and i want to make my lockdown americana-proof.

here's problem #3:
are there any tips out there when doing lockdown with the gi? It's not as easy when guys are grabbing my gi like crazy.

something new to me that I've been working lately with success is threatening a straight arm on the arm that is cross facing me. I grab that elbow with both hands, roll to my opposite shoulder and go for a straight arm. Sometimes I actually get the straight arm, but when I don't it opens up a lot of possibilities when they sprawl out and defend. This works even better in the gi when they are gripping your collar and turning their elbow up high for the cross face.

theres an mts episode i think 53 or something. eddie is in england. (birmingham maybe) and hes talking about the new electric chair from half. watching that should help.

id suggest working on keeping your arms t-rexed until you go for something. for example, you get up on your side, bottum arm can hook under the opponents leg and the top arm stays t-rexed until you want to go for either electric chair or dog fight, (threaten with dog fight and then go into electric chair works too)

trex like that will stop u from getting americana'd as much.

for lockdown in gi, others might have more advice but id just say, practice more lockdown in gi. get those reps in.

and i find shrimping helps to turn me on my side when ive got a guy trying to squish me with over under, slow and steady just focus on moving to your side. from there you can heismann to get the underhooks going. i prefer deep half kind of game hooking that bottum arm under his leg but if not then keep that heismann there until you commit to the perfect double unders.

Jason, it's not so much the cross face (in front of my face), they put their arm around my head and put the pressure on my face with their shoulder.

For me, it just took a certain amount of handfighting reps to win this battle. Lately, when I get the lockdown (and even before I get it, I check the far side arm so my opponent can't get head and arm control. Ive been doing the same thing in quarter guard and the new side control escape (one of the more recent MTS's). Now that my control on that far bicep is strong, I've been having more success with my side control escapes/vise versa. I think another thing I do is to move my opponents balance around a little bit by bringing my lockdown closer or further from my body and a little side to side so my opponent has to base out with his arms (then I have small windows to jam in an underhook). It is a lot like your ability to pull your legs in and break your opponents posture in full guard. If my opponent tries to hide his far side arm so I can't control the bicep, I will threaten with a kimura, but I am a bigger guy so this might just be a size move. Usually after I threaten the kimura I get a little bit of space so I can try again for an underhook.

When I watch Eddie roll, he seems to concede head and arm control and then transition to rubber guard, I guess this is the ultimate goal, to have a really good super stomp to butterfly to cocoon, and/or a good rubber guard b/c then the hand fighting becomes a mute point.

I've encountered this problem. Curtis from HQ has a nasty kimura when he is in somebody's lock down. I am always pummeling for double underhooks, but when I'm scared of an attack on my arm, I bring my arms back to T-rex, and even gable my hands if i'm really scared. For example, he goes for a kimura on my left arm when I have him in the lockdown, I bridge my hips for a second, then use that space to bring my right hand under his hips and get a gable grip so I can recapture my arm


here's problem#3:
are there any tips out there when doing lockdown with the gi? It's not as easy when guys are grabbing my gi like crazy. I haven't trained in the gi in a while, but do you think there is a bow-arrow type choke you can threaten with when the guy go's twister pass? Let me know, I don't plan on training in the gi enough to ever find out.

For problem #2: what do you do when he's totally in control of your left arm? When i was submitted, he was switching from straight arm bar to americana. i kept rotating my arm but he eventually got me. I'm ok at not being kimuraed but the americana is my weakness when someone is bigger or stronger then me.
for problem #3, just learned the bow and arrow from the back but i can't imagine it from lockdown. I'll ask the guys at my academy, maybe they can see it

I'm sure other people can offer better advice on this. I only have one thing I do here. ( I am assuming you had control of your opponents right leg and he was attacking your left arm?) If so, the first thing I do is damage control on my left arm (the arm he is attacking). Ideally I can grap my hand or wrist to keep my forearem close to my chest. If I can't get that, I will grap by bicep like I was doing a RNC. After that, I give up my lockdown. Because my opponent is putting a lot of weight on my arm, his legs and hips are relatively light. Once my lockdown is released, I straighten my legs and bring my right leg underneath his right leg so I have conceded side control (basically, I am sliding my right leg under his leg so it is no longer inbetween his legs). At that point, I sit up and turn to my left side at the same time. Because my hips are so closed to his hips, and his base is far forward attacking my arm, I have a easy time sweeping him, and once I'm on top, I have an easy time preventing him from america-ing me. For me the overall motion is similar to the transition from quarter guard to the dog fight, or maybe more similar to the motion when you do the hip bump sweep from the closed guard. I am sitting up and then rotating my body as if I wanted to go belly down, that has the effect of bumping my opponent off of me and I land on top. I hope this makes sense, I can try to explain it better...

When guys try to Americana from inside the lockdown, I prefer to whip down. That relieves the pressure of the Americana and opens up the 5-0 series of options.

Yeah that might be slightly more simple :) It seems like when you whip down it gets easier it is to reclaim your arm

Hey Luis, I've had exactly the same problems the last few weeks and here is what has worked for me fwiw-

problem #1: the Godfather to full guard recovery, but in any event when Jaws won't happen I immediately overhook the opponent's underhook and pimp arm the hip on the other side, this at least relieves the pressure if they are smashing their shoulder into my jaw. Also prevents an Americana or Ezekiel attempt bc at least my arms aren't in the wrong place.

problem #2: the lockdown when applied correctly hurts, no two ways about it, which either makes the opponent compliant or angry. I've had a couple angry guys crank the Americana or straight armlock as I squeeze the lockdown harder from off my back; no good. The lockdown is no defense to arms being in the wrong place or being flattened. If I find myself losing and get into an americana battle I will abandon the lockdown and Heisman the opponent's armpit to escape the submission attempt.

problem #3: In the gi especially I like to Whip Down and head into the 5 0 series since there is a sleeve there to grab for the 5 0 sweep, which makes it easier. I actually find guys in the gi are less savvy to what is happening in lockdown… in fairness my gi partners do not typically cross train in no-gi.

I try to work different options, so I don't care if I have the underhooks or not.
If they have over under I go to stomp. If I have double unders I whip, and if I can't whip them I go for prison guard, just as a way to practice three different broad paths with variations. (I'm not good at this mind you, I'm just trying to learn) :}

I had a class mate that would crush me when I had my lockdown in. Jaws of life would never work, he's just too strong. I then started doing the stomp sequences, BUT if you wanna keep working on the lockdown, the only thing that worked on my classmate was before I'd pull half guard and lockdown, I'd be more conscious of my arm placement. For example, I'd make sure my left arm was in position to get the underhook before establishing lockdown. If it wasn't in position, I'd bail and so something else. Like master eddie says, lockdown won't always work so you just need to work on alternatives.

Hey BMAC, I never thought of whipping down if they have head and arm control. Is it easy to whip down from there? Seems like I just go straight Super stomp anytime someone has head and arm.

True. I've also been working my knee shield and my arm drag. Thanks for the tips.

1) Superstomp is my favorite from here. Cory used to crush the shit out of my face even if I had double under he would still get a cross face going. At first because I could only look that way I tried reverse lockdown and peeling the hands off but that shit didnt work because he would spin for twister pass... I personally have the most success in that situation by using super stomp to butterfly double unders and then switch to closed guard.

what move can I do from the whip down? I saw the mts episode where eddie goes over it but since I'm just a blue belt, i can't do heel hooks. I have not drilled it yet but it looks like there is a sweep there similar to the electric chair. should i look up the 5-0 series? or is there a sweep after you get your head out and push them away?
