Wrist locks in 10p system

Hey everyone,

I just started learning jiu jitsu about two weeks ago and I am loving it so far.

How much emphasis is there on wristlocks in the system?
Background: I did about 8 years of Aikido and left about 8 years ago.

I still remember some wrist locks and was hoping to incorporate it in somehow.
What kind of positions do you seeing this be most effective in?

Should I even look at working this into my game yet or wait until I have a more solid grasp of the fundamentals?

I think wrist locks are awesome and I haven't heard of any tournaments that ban them. Definitely something to be incorporating.

Wrist-lock to your hearts content.

With no-gi and sweat, the aikido ones dont seem to work great, you kinda need to control the arm from the elbow down. Keenan has a video of wrist locks for bjj on youtube.

Ari Bouldin (submission101) has a collection of wrist lock videos that I like. Google him and decide for yourself.

The Wrister is one of my favorite things on earth.

wrist locking someone with hand wraps and gloves plus tons of tap on their hands... which is likely also a really tough dude... There is a reason you never see that. Much more of a threat in no-gi than mma, that's for sure though. I also agree with an above comment that mentioned controlling the elbow. That's generally a key principle of getting a wrist lock to work real time.

I come from a "japanese" Jiu jitsu background, where many wrist-, arm- and shoulder locks are used for self-defense purposes. One reason I started self-teaching BJJ and especially 10PJJ was that I felt wristlocks aren't "real". If you like I will record everything I know about those locks and maybe I will try to show some wristlocks from different "BJJ" positions that I think could work in a grappling match. Please tel me what you think :)

I've also dabbled in some traditional martial arts like that, and many of the types of wrist locks those guys do are... low percentage at best.. So I get what your saying with those not being real.

How a wrist lock is done in BJJ is typically much different than the traditional martial arts version. For instance, wrist lock from an Omaplata: very real. You can argue its not necessary there or that the damage from doing something else from that position instead (in this case the shoulder lock) would be more devastatingly damaging to help guarantee the end of a fight... And those things might be true, But that wrist lock is pretty real... You could always break is shoulder too if you needed too.
