Uniform policy
Just trying to get some straight and honest feedback from other 10th Planet moons on uniform policy, particularly the bigger moons with the bigger membership base.
At Elements MMA / 10th Planet Jiu jitsu Birmingham we currently have in excess of 100 members, doing jiu jitsu, Muay Thai and mma and a mixture of the three
Currently there is no uniform policy, members can wear whatever they like on the mat
My question is how do the moons with a similar number of members feel about switching to uniform policy where students must rep the brand in some way shape or form during training?
Does you school have uniform policy?
Do you see uniform policy as a positive, neutral or negative move, particularly from the perspective of a brand new student who is about to join?
What effect does it have to see the team all wearing team uniform on the mat rather than having one or two odd ones out wearing what they like, eg an old tee shirt they may have been wearing most of the day?
Does it seem pushy of the school to force adults to wear something they might not have previously chosen to train in? What affect might that have on a students decision whether or not to join? Does individualism have its place in the school or should it be a case of 'train with us, wear what we tell you'
If there was to be a switch at your school, from no uniform policy to uniform policy overnight, how much choice would you expect to have in terms of options on colours and design, long or short sleeve etc for you to feel comfortable being made to wear uniform?
How would you feel about being told you could no longer wear your favourite non 10th planet branded rash guard?
If you prefer not to be told what to wear, would it soften the blow if your uniform was given to you, free of charge, every six months?
Appreciate all the feedback, and try to include the size of the school when replying as this is important to me - a school with less than 30 members can probably stand to be more loose on uniform than a school with 500 members for example. Thanks

My kids program has a strict uniform policy but not my adult classes.

Here in Vegas we don't have a uniform policy that I've been told. Coaches recommend rash guard or tight fitting t-shirts pocketless shorts or spats. Some stuff can be dangerous to fingers and toes in transitions

The 10th Planet culture is not friendly toward going to an exact uniform ( aka: everyone wears EXACTLY the same thing) though I do know one 10p moon that does that. Its cool for team spirit but are you really gonna tell a hard core 10p4l guy that comes in with a cool rash guard from eddies site that he can't wear it?
I'm not super hard core about it, but I ask for one piece of 10p gear on during the 4 basic 10p classes. That way if they have their favorite non 10p shorts, they can wear them as long as they have a 10p rash guard and vice versa. Also any 10p gear works, so everyone won't be wearing the same thing, its still a rainbow but at least it encourages my guys to support other 10ps for outside purchases rather than a random clothing company. And its not requested in every single class either.
This is the most I feel I can ask due to the 10p culture of exotic rash guards and spats and a good percentage will still have no 10p on occasionally.
Thing is, I'm not trying to be like Gracie Barra that has white gis only extra, but I'd like to see a little 10p spirit. I think this is a fine line we have to be careful with. The only gear I have ever straight up asked someone not to wear again is ranked gear for a rank they have not achieved yet and based off of the push back I've gotten about that when its 10p ranked gear from this site that was given to someone as a gift, I can only imagine the headache of not allowing any outside gear. No thanks, no matter the number of students.

If we were to implement this it would include all official 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu rash guards, no doubt about it. Having options is key.

cool I have most of them anyway :) - see you Sat Chris

For kids I can get it. IMO, I wouldn't for adult classes. For me what matters is more so what they wear when they compete. I have gear from friends who have gyms and/or own companies that I wear to train. But, when it comes to competition, it is about representing yourself and your team.

Not at a 10P school and we don't have a uniform policy.
Being adults, it would rub me the wrong way a bit, if a coach tried to bring it in. What about the $100's I've spent on all my other gear etc? Supplying 'uniforms' would soften the blow but how you'd do that for dudes that train 6 times a weeks etc, not sure $$$ wise it would make sense for the coach.
If it was going to brought iN there would need to be a line in the sand for anyone new that comes through the door, this is the uniform rule. Is the only way it would work IMO.
Agree with Jarrell though for comps, that's where you should be reppin your team no questions.
** And sorry, just re-read, you weren't asking for random opinions. My bad, disregard if you wish **

It would be a major turnoff for me if uniform or brand-repping were made compulsory for regular training at our club, but because I love 10P I rep it as much as I can anyways. No-one likes being FORCED to buy gear. People would rather pick the gear they want.
That being said, we are encouraged to rep when competing.

I have had discussions with other school owners on this topic. One in particular mentioned that he was going to go with a school uniform. I myself thought of having this as policy as well. After thinking about it some, I decided against it. My feeling is that Jiu-Jitsu is an expression and that those that practice should have a say in how they represent that expression both in how they roll and in what they wear (as long as what they wear is functional and doesn't pose a risk). We do have 10th Planet gear for sale, but our students are not obligated to purchase...my feeling is, if you have a healthy, supportive school environment, your students will want to represent your gear without being made to do so.
